Thank you. We are driving from Pennsylvania so most likely have to stay in Newark. Looking for somewhere to park that’s gated & secure so we don’t have to worry about leaving car for 28 days.

FYI -- I've used SNAP parking in Newark (near the airport) many times. Cars are parked in a garage which means protection from snow when traveling in the winter months.

Emerald Princess (Seattle/Alaska) 8/2/2020 sail date.

Princess canceled sailing on May 6.

TA submitted form for refund request on my behalf on May 8.

No other communications to Princess or credit card since then.

I have been waiting for $200 deposits on two cabins. Separate booking numbers.

This morning one $200 deposit shows as refunded to my credit card. No idea which cabin this is attached to.

I'll keep watching for the other one.

Second cabin deposit refund finally posted to my credit card today. Over a month since the first one (linked reservations, connecting cabins). No idea why they couldn't have done both at the same time back in late July.

Over the past month I did use the website chat feature about once a week to follow up on the missing second refund. The information in replies was minimal and barely helpful -- we see your two cabins, one was refunded, please be patient with us, no idea when you'll get it -- but at least their chat response time was quick. I guess that's something.

  4. So if I can't get to the port early, and 12:30-1pm seems to be the worst time to arrive, does anyone have a guess at when things start calming down? I'd really prefer to avoid long lines in the cold and just show up a bit later on.

When does check-in officially close? Certainly don't want to miss the ship!

  5. Two more questions about the Breezes day pass for anyone who knows:

    1. Can I wait until the day we dock to decide to go to Breezes and buy day passes there? (I'd rather not buy a families-worth of tickets ahead of time with the risk of non-beach weather (late December). Is this refundable at all?)

    2. How does the hotel enforce the age 14+?

    Thanks in advance!

  6. I got caught up in something like this I think it was called the passenger service act (or something like that) I disembarked myself in FLA. from a cruise that embarked in NYC. What happen was while at port in FLA I met a woman who would later become my wife, I went back on-board packed all my stuff and left. Didn't think anything about it. 3 years later my wife and I are going through customs at SEA-TAC and customs started going crazy, took us to a side room read me the riot act for a half hour, and then I had to pay a fine, I think it was about $300. Put a "special" stamp in my passport too.

Were you cruising with anyone? I'd be very curious to know what their experience was when you went "missing" from the trip! I'm assuming they understood you left -- but what was the reaction from the ship's crew?

Anyone else experience this type of event?

  7. My suggestion is to download the Waze app to your phone and use that for your drive to the port in the morning. Before you actually put the car into drive, you can check the "routes" page and get three alternative driving routes listed with times, mileage and whether it is a toll route or not.

Waze might even redirect you during the drive based on real-time traffic conditions. Listening to that voice can save you a lot of time versus simply driving the route you know.

    Enjoy your cruise!

  8. To clarify, each of you was booked in a separate cabin?

Yes. Each of us was booked in a separate cabin. Two booking numbers, same sailing. We had two cabins with our kids and split one parent in each cabin with children for booking purposes. Limited to $100 credit total since we owned 100 shares jointly at the time.

Just to complete the thought - fast forward to our upcoming cruise and owning 200 shares jointly qualifies us for $100 for each cabin. We are again in two separate cabins with two booking numbers.

  9. This is not true. It does not matter if a couple owns 100 shares or 600 shares, the obc is the same. 100 shares jointly owned is sufficient for obc for two cabins booked with one stock owner in each cabin.

Not so sure. No surprise, but maybe there is inconsistency in how it's handled.

Here is how the denial from last year was worded when I tried to claim shareholder credit for a second cabin, two booking numbers, same sailing with only 100 shares in our joint account:

Our records show that (DH name) has already redeemed the shareholder onboard credit to reservation #. Unfortunately, we won't be able to apply the onboard credit to this (second) reservation as only one onboard credit can be applied per shareholder-occupied stateroom for the account holders that have only 100 shares with Carnival and two persons on one account as the shares will be split between both persons.

For my upcoming sailing I did get two credits since we now own 200 shares in a joint account. Two cabins, two booking numbers, same sailing. DH sent in the email request a few weeks ago with an account statement since we only owned 100 shares at first. Then I bought more, sent in the second request under my name with a new joint account statement showing 200 shares and even pointed out in my email that our other booking was already approved. I was approved too.

  10. I've never needed this but just curious. If the 100 shares are held jointly in both names, can each spouse book their own room with someone else and each cabin get the OBC? Just wondered if it would work with our friends who sometimes travel with us.

I have experienced this. In your scenario, 100 shares jointly owned would have the $100 onboard credit split 50/50 or applied to only one cabin.

200+ shares held in a joint account can be claimed for two $100 shareholder credits when joint account holders are in two different booking numbers/cabins on the same sailing.

  11. Too bad scrambling trying to make plans to get home as taken up most of my day. I had to pay $500 for a new flight home on Wednesday (luckily my insurance will reimburse it). But no assistance from Guest Services with either the phone or anything else. They advised me to use the free internet to do what I needed to... Not helpful for contacting the insurance company.

The cost of the direct phone call to the insurance company is likely covered under your claim.

Best wishes for a good day today and the rest of your trip.

  12. If you're on one of the newer ships there's newer more affordable internet packages.

Social ($5 per day) - Access to Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn, Pinterest, WhatsApp, & snapchat but no internet.

Value ($16 per day) - Internet access including email, news, sports, weather, banking, and finance. ( No Skype or music streaming.)

Premium ($25 per day) - emails, Internet, Skype, at the fastest possible connection speeds up to 3 times faster than the value plan.

    Thanks for summarizing this.

I'll be on the Carnival Breeze soon. Does anyone know if the $5 HUB onboard texting app a separate add-on charge to any internet package? And can the internet package be shared between devices? I realize it would be one at a time, but can two phones share a login?

  13. One option is to change your outbound flight to leave from another airport (south) that is not in the snow forecast.

Unfortunately, by the time the weather report gets bad enough for the airlines to allow no-charge changes, the phone lines are impossible. Travel insurance should pay if the weather is bad enough that your original flights don't go.

Last year I had a similar situation. Bad weather in Newark, waiting on hold for hours, so I booked a new one way flight from Baltimore on the web and somehow must have contacted the airline to let them know I did that and was going to use my return ticket. (Be careful to communicate so they don't cancel your return.) Parked my car at Newark airport, rented a car and drove to Baltimore. I stayed at a hotel near BWI and returned the car at the airport there. I did fly home to Newark per my original ticket. Travel insurance picked up the extra costs -- save all of your receipts. The insurance company claim process did require a letter from the airline that my NY area flight was canceled.

    Good luck!

  14. I know this thread is old, but i had a experience like this before. Me and my sister went on a cruise last year and flew from from ny to florida. we had a very bad snow storm. a bunch of flights was cancelled, and ours was delayed . we made it but it was very scary we thought we was going to miss the cruise, but thats not the crazy part!!! originally we was going to fly in a day earlier but we decided not to, and we met a girl on the boat, who friends decided to fly in a TWO extra days earlier and their flights was cancelled due to the bad snow storm and they had to miss 2 ports. so my point is you can plan ahead all you want just to be pushed back at the last moment. Me and my sister flew in the day of and everything was good vs those girls who flew in two days extra just to miss out on two amazing ports..

I had a similar situation last February.

Travel companion had a flight from Newark, NJ to Florida the day prior to the cruise but local snow led to flight cutbacks at the airport that day. He and his family spent a very long day at the airport trying to get out to anywhere to connect to Florida. It all worked out but was so stressful.

Meanwhile, my flight, early on day of departure, left and arrived without a hitch.

You just never know with weather.

(I do buy travel insurance but sure hope I don't need to use it!)

  15. Does anyone think/know if there is any advantage to booking a cruise line (Carnival) sponsored transfer vs. the airport shuttle? The Carnival r/t price is $8 more pp. I'd consider it if there is some safety that they'll "hold the ship" once we're on the bus...

I am traveling in a group of 5 and prefer not to need to split between more than one taxi.

  16. Two packing list items to recommend for kids who have sign-out privileges:

    1. their own watch

    2. a lanyard so they can always have their own room key available. (Guest Services will have a hole punch for their card.)

We encourage our kids to put their lanyard in the same spot each time they come into the cabin....even so we seem to have more than a few sessions of hunting for one when it's time to leave to get somewhere!
