    Same here Mura, I haven’t checked in very often since we are not cruising because of the Covid restrictions, but I loved getting advice from Don Horner and Paul.  We were supposed to have dinner with Don and his wife once, but it didn’t work out.  Love & prayers for Paul’s family.

    Booked my FIRST cruise a few months ago with Viking for next January.  Got the email with their new policy.  Viking is a very smart company and I don't doubt that they will be gaining customers over this.

     

    Have not even cruised on either line, and will book Viking in the future. Even though Viking's offer is "temporary" it is good to know that we can rely on them at this time.  

     

    Oceania, if you're reading this, you are losing customers as we speak.  

    Agree!  We, too, have a May cruise with O and also considered trying Viking.   We have always loved O, but have not heard anything from them yet.

    Lest you think that all I do is drink, I will also recommend to you two restaurants nearby:  One is cheap, delightful, historic, and delicious:  Ariston's bakery. They sell traditional savory "pies" with many different fillings; have been around forever. The pies make a great quick lunch and are VERY traditional. The location is just 2-3 blocks from the hotel.     (Be sure you note how the word "Ariston" is spelled in the Greek alphabet, since that's what you'll see outside the store....)

     

    The other place is more of a dinner choice. The Greek name is the equivalent of our "The Ant and the Grasshopper" (remember the fable?):  Tzitzikas kai Mermigas.  It was recommended to me by an Athenian and I've eaten there numerous times. They aren't flashy (although not "old school Greek" either -- it's sort of a modern farm-house to table aesthetic), no rooftop view or maudlin Greek music.  What they do have is good local ingredients, well prepared. Reservations are recommended. There are a couple of locations in Athens but there is one just off Syntagma Square, just a couple of blocks from the Grande Bretagne.     “Venice will no longer permit cruise ships to dock after the vessels were blamed for damaging the city's foundations and ruining the skyline. The Italian government made the announcement yesterday, revealing cruise ships would now be rerouted away from the historic city centre.20 hours ago”

     

     

    I wonder how this will affect our overnight in Venice next May?

    Credit and thanks to StanandJim who arranged our wonderful Amalfi Coast Drive that day from Sorrento, let us join their private tour and arranged for a BD dessert for me. Gorgeous views and one of the special memories I will carry with me always.

    How fun!   I always wanted to meet StanandJim in person.   CintiPam, I can't remember anything anymore.   Didn't we go on a tour of Berlin with you guys?   I think you arranged it.

    I agree with Dan about the merits of just resting after such a long flight!  Since we fly from NYC it's not so bad for us.  But that is why we have always planned on a few days pre- and post-cruise in the beginning and ending ports.  We were always able to do so because even pre-retirement my husband had the time from his job, and I just told my job when I'd be there!  (Heck, my office even bought tickets for my concerts.)  I just disagree with Dan about the merits of the port area but we are all entitled to our own opinons!

     

    Have a wonderful cruise.  We've always enjoyed our time in Marriotts, even if we just crashed in bed upon arrival and slept for 10 hours!

    Thank you, Mura.   We are excited about this cruise.   We plan to stay a couple of days afterwards in Athens since we have never been there.   We are also looking forward to the hotel we have booked there!   Our wonderful TA recommended it.   It is the Hotel Grande Bretagne.   She also recommended a private guide for there.

    Look at the big picture  you wont save by staying in the port... it might actually cost you emotionally and physically 

    Thank you so much for this post!   This is what my husband wanted to do in the first place!  We are arriving just one day before the day we board the ship.  We have already been to Rome twice and have no desire to go again, so we are going to use Marriott points and do as you suggested.   Which Marriott do you recommend near the airport, if there is more than one, and any suggestions for transportation from hotel to ship?

    Thank you all for your recommendations!  We decided on the La Marina B&B.  

    Mura, we would love to have dinner at II Fuoco di Bacco.  ❤️   We are so excited to be taking another O cruise!   I remember so many of you on this board from our earlier cruises.   I will never forget Don Horner.😢.  We have our wonderful TA because of all of you ‘old timers’.
