  1. Whiteladder, I'm still waiting for my stateroom assignment, too. It would be lovely if the upgrade fairy visited me. In all the cruising I've done, the UF has avoided me like the plague! :) But as long as the back of the boat gets to the destination at the same time as the front of the boat, I'm happy.

  2. My husband noticed that the kids in "our" third grade classroom were writing with the inside of the pen--what we used to call the refill. Might be a great idea to bring them some packs of ballpoint pens (I wish I had)--can get them cheap at the big box stores or the usual stationary stores. I brought crayons (only thing I could find Made in America), stickers (both the kind the teacher could use and the kinds kids like--trucks, etc), markers, activity books, etc. They are so poor they can use ANYTHING! As has been stated earlier in this thread most of the stuff we associate with "Made in China" is not available on the shelves there or if it is is very expensive--I didn't do a lot of shopping (I know, I know) so that is just a general observation.

Thanks so much for the information! Ballpoint pens, stickers, markers, activity books - sounds like it's time to buy out the school section of some big box stores.

  3. Many people on this thread have suggested taking colored pencils for the kids in the Viking school(s). Are there any other things that the kids might also appreciate - crayons, sidewalk chalk, activity books? I'm definitely looking for suggestions for gifts from their "long-nosed" friend. :)

    Thanks!

OMG, less than 6 weeks. I'd better get packing!

  4. You mean I missed one!? Dang! And here I thought I was being so good about keeping up on the additions. Sorry. :o

I added it to the list above.

Don't sell yourself short, Peregrina. You're doing an AWESOME job and we appreciate it!

  5. Dear Peregrina651,

    Best,

    Viking River Cruises

Wow! I am SO impressed by how responsive VRC is. I appreciate how quickly y'all respond to questions and issues. I can hardly wait until May!

  6. ...Shebawalk since you probably use y'all a lot...you can finish your Chinese sentences with nimen dou...nee men doe. Literally, you we all;-). But only in southern China because they'll never understand in Beijing:)....

Since a couple of people mentioned "digging to China." I took this photo of a couple of guys with shovels in 2009.

I captioned it: "Ho,ho,ho...off to work in go. Since I tried to dig to China as a child, these guys are probably on there way to the United States."

    IMG_6327-S.jpg

Well, I'll definitely be using the Chinese y'all. And, just like the US, I don't expect the northern Beijing-ers to understand southern-speak. Hmmm, is there a Chinese term for "honey"? Everyone in the South is "honey". ;)

Those guys probably had much better luck digging to the US than we had digging to China. Their shovels are bigger than the ones my siblings and I used.

Thank you so much for sharing your Chinese phrasery. I hope to have a little of it memorized before I land in Shanghai.

  7. Xiexie to everyone who answered my concern about my trip documents. I'll rest easy until May!

Kohola, also xiexie for the additional Chinese phrases. I'm going to write all of them down so I can use them a lot. Our mothers were right about the magic words - "please" and "thank you". They work in any language. I hope they will be able to understand my southern-accented Chinese. :)

Here are the links that Viking has sent so far:

The first two are video links and the last one is to a reading and travel guide.

I am SO excited about this trip. When I was a kid, I used to try digging a hole to China, but it was way too hard and it seemed like it would take forever. Who'da thunk that a 16 hour plane ride would take me there?!?

    Zaijian

  8. I received my visa today - only 19 days after I sent it to the visa company. Pretty awesome!

I'm on the 5/30 trip and I haven't received my trip packet from Viking yet. Should I be concerned?

I appreciate the links that Viking sends about China. I particularly liked the Mandarin phrases.

    Gan bei!

  9. Is there an opportunity to see the Chinese face changers? They're definitely on my to-do list.

Anyone else on the 5/31 trip? I sent my passport off on 3/1, so I expect to get it back shortly.

    75 days and counting!

  10. I got stuck on a cruise ship elevator because 4 people managed to cram themselves in it as the doors were closing. We were stuck until the crew found someone to pry the doors open and help us crawl out. It was horrendous. Now if people insist on crowding onto an elevator, I push my way out. Life is way too short to get stuck in an elevator!

  11. Stephanie, my wife and I loved your post. Funny stuff!!

Also to clarify I have eaten at many eateries from low class to high class and I am almost sure that I will enjoy our cruise. I fish on boats where they have bunks to sleep in and the best fair is with cheese or without. I have eaten meals cooked in fires(Boy scouts), cheese and bread in France(etc.) and fine eateries in many cities. I have lived in the four corners of our wonderful country (excluding Alaska)(We settled in California).

I assure you I would and will enjoy a cheese sandwich on board if that is all they serve. Cruising is a great experience and I can't wait to get back on board. 39 days and counting.

Next great experience is just around the corner. Gotta love the sea!

I'm witcha. A bad day at sea beats a good day at work - anytime!

  12. This has sure become and "entertaining" thread in a hurry. Can't find this much bickering, oops sorry, "differences of opinion" at your average hockey game:rolleyes:

I think I'm just going to wait until I experience "AYW dining" before making any more comments. That way I can speak from "experience" instead of from "speculation" and "hear say"

In the mean time, some questions to ponder, perhaps?

Why do you have to "put your two cents in".. but it's only

a "penny for your thoughts"? Where's that extra penny

    going to?

Once you're in heaven, do you get stuck wearing the clothes you were buried in for eternity?

Why does a round pizza come in a square box?

What disease did cured ham actually have?

How is it that we put man on the moon before we figured

out it would be a good idea to put wheels on luggage?

Why is it that people say they "slept like a baby" when

babies wake up like every two hours?

If a deaf person has to go to court, is it still called a hearing?

Why do people pay to go up tall buildings and then put

money in binoculars to look at things on the ground?

Why do doctors leave the room while you change? They're going to see you naked anyway.

Why is "bra" singular and "panties" plural?

Why do toasters always have a setting that burns the toast to a horrible crisp, which no decent human being would eat?

If Jimmy cracks corn and no one cares, why is there a

    stupid song about him?

Can a hearse carrying a corpse drive in the carpool lane?

If the professor on Gilligan's Island can make a radio out of a coconut, why can't he fix a hole in a boat?

Why does Goofy stand erect while Pluto remains on all

    fours? They're both dogs!

If Wile E. Coyote had enough money to buy all that ACME crap, why didn't he just buy dinner?

If corn oil is made from corn, and vegetable oil is made

from vegetables, what is baby oil made from?

If electricity comes from electrons, does morality come

    from morons?

Why do they call it an asteroid when it's outside the hemisphere, but call it a hemorrhoid when it's in your butt?

Did you ever notice that when you blow in a dog's face, he gets mad at you, but when you take him for a car ride, he sticks his head out the window?

Do the Alphabet song and Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star

    have the same tune?

Why did you just try singing the two songs above?;)

OMIGOSH! I just started reading this message board today and I had to skip most of the pages 'cause it is just TOO big. Copper, I think you hit the nail on the head. There are just too many unanswered questions in this life. Unassigned vs assigned seating is just one of them. : )

I tried NCL's Free-style Cruising and I hated it. I usually travel solo, so I like assigned seating. My mother and I will be on HAL next month, so I guess we'll see how we like the hybrid. I'm reserving judgment until then.
