  1. We are sailing on the Gem out of Quebec City in September.  All of our stops are Canadian ports except for Bar Harbor and Boston.  Even though we have paid gratuities on the beverage package and daily service charge we still like to tip cash to crew members who provide great service as well as at the specialty restaurants.  My question is what currency should we tip in?  We've only done Caribbean cruises before so have tipped in US$ but was thinking the crew might appreciate CAN$ to spend in the Canadian ports.  Thoughts?

  2. We are cruising on the Dawn 11 day Southern Caribbean on January 17. We have the 4 meal SDP. We both prefer the appetizers/soups/salads over the entree's. Would we be able to order multiple starters/soups/salads and then just share an entree? Thanks in advance for your answers!

  3. I was just offered an opportunity to bid on the Sky for the Jan 12,2018 sailing. We booked a Obstructed OV and we could bid on a balcony, penthouse and owners suite. Minimum bids were $50 for balcony, $300 for penthouse and $500 for owners suite. I only bid on the balcony.

  4. I've found when I'm at sea (and docked) I can't control my hair. (I don't know how some people have such neat looking luck)

I've brought my own dryer many times now I just use the one in our cabin. It works fine.

The second I step out though...[emoji52]

LOL, I have the same problem! My hair has a mind of its own! I don't even bother trying anymore!

  5. 1-800-625-4309 from what I have read it's only 2 weeks before the cruise.. I called yesterday for cruise on Jan 17th and they had no offers. Told me to call back next week.

I called Monday and was told there were no offers....called Tuesday got a girl named Kim and she gave me the offer.....keep trying!

  6. I posted a couple of weeks ago about my quest to upsell from an inside cabin to a balcony for our upcoming 14 day breakaway cruise. At the time I just missed out on an upsell of $300pp from inside to balcony. I was disappointed but some nice CC members advised me to wait until 15 days out and call the upsell department.

I called yesterday and was told there were no upsells available so I decided to call my TA and just pay the price diffference between the inside and balcony and be done with it. When I call my TA she advised me that I could upgrade to a balcony for 50pp but would lose my UBP. What?? I couldn't give that up since both my husband and I like to indulge a little so I declined.

Today, determined to get that balcony cabin, I called the upsell department again. To my delight they offered me an upgrade to a balcony for $200pp and I get to keep my UBP! So excited! I was assigned cabin 8710 and was happy just to have a balcony but after some research I have discovered that not only did I get a balcony cabin but one with an extra large balcony...100sq feet! It is at the very front of the ship which I have never experienced before but who cares I am cruising for 14 days in a cabin with and extra large balcony. This will be the best cruise ever.

Thanks to all who offered their advice. Cruise Critic is the best place ever to get helpful information!!

    Happy cruising everyone!

P.S I was so excited I had to tell my husband so he won't be surprised on the ship but it is nice to share the excitement now!

  7. A little update on my quest to surprise my husband with an upgrade to a balcony cabin on our upcoming 14 day cruise on the Breakaway. I decided that after I missed out on the $600.00 upgrade to a balcony a few weeks back that I would wait until less than 14 days and call the upsell department, I called today and I was told there were no upsells available.

The price of a balcony has dropped to within 200.00pp of the price I paid for my inside so I thought I will just call my TA and pay the difference and be done with it. My TA put me on hold while she called NCL and came back on the line to tell me that we could upgrade to a balcony for $50.00pp. I can't tell you how excited I was until she informed me that I would lose the UBP perk...what a bummer. I asked why I would lost the promotion that I booked and was told that it was because it was within 30 days of sailing.

I am very bummed about this but I am going to keep calling the upsell department everyday and hope something becomes available. I'm not looking for a free upgrade I'm willing to pay so hopefully something comes up.

    Thanks

  8. Update. I missed the boat, no pun intended! The prices did a really weird thing overnight. They went from IN- 989, OV-1099, BA - 1099 Suite 1399 on Tuesday to IN- 1114, OV - 989, BA- 1599 Suite 1899 today. So no more $600.00 upsell. When I look on line it looks like they are almost sold out of insides and oceanview but have lots of balconies and suites left. So I guess I am going to wait and see. I am still ok with an inside cabin I just thought it would be nice to surprise my husband with a Balcony.

Thanks everyone for your thoughts and advise!

  9. Thanks for the quick reply. I am ok with an inside, it is actually my husband who really wants the balcony. My plan is to surprise him on the ship if I do end up upselling. He has no idea I'm even thinking about it! I may just gamble a little longer and see.

    Thanks

  10. I booked an inside guarantee on the Breakaway for a 14 day cruise back in September. I got a fantastic deal. At that time balconies were going for $1000 USD more per person. We are Canadian so when you figure in the exchange it was way too much. I am now 25 days out and I can get an upsell to a balcony for $300 USD per person which I know would be well worth it for 14 nights. I have read on this board that it is best to wait until less than 15 days out to get an even better deal. My concern about waiting is two fold...firstly that the ship will sell out and there would be no upsell's available and secondly that I would not get to keep my perk (UBP). The current offer of $300.00 PP. I can keep the UBP. What would you do? My TA called them, they didn't contact us. When I check on line there seems to be a lot of unsold cabins. Any advise would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks

  11. Thank you for all your reply's. It's weird because even when I go as far as I can without actually making payment it doesn't say anything about the gratuities it just says this:

    our Items

    Dining (1): $174.64

    Order Total: $174.64

Total price shown above is inclusive of all applicable taxes and fees.

This is for the 4 specialty dinner package listed at 87.32/pp. Oh well, I will just assume the 18% will be added on top of this.

    Thank you all.

  12. Sorry for the confusion. I'm Ruby status and I wanted to know if I only need one more cruise to get to the next level ( which I now know is Platinum not Elite) and I booked a B2B would my Platinum status kick in on the 2nd cruise?

    Thanks
