  1. We were also on the Sun in April of 2013, and it has definitely been our favorite cruise so far! In fact, although we have a cruise booked on the Escape this winter and will soon be booking two more cruises for next year, we're really bummed that the Sun isn't doing those 10 day Southern Caribbean itineraries anymore. The staff was amazing, the food was great and the ship was beautiful and just the right size, IMO.

  2. OMG, I had forgotten about the shower size on the Sun: yes, they are small, but unless you are huge, I can't imagine the size of a shower influencing my ship choice and I am not small by any stretch of the imagination.

We did a 10-night on the Sun in a porthole cabin and had absolutely no problem with the shower. Yes, the shower is small and I'm not petite, AND I have a LOT of hair, but I managed to escape without shower curtain-induced post traumatic stress. Clearly that is not the case for 99% of the people who sail the Sun.

  3. Someone else mentioned the syrup debacle so I thought I touch on that. When we were on the Jewel in November, the syrup was fine/okay. Definitely not pure maple, but it was good enough. If it had been bad, I would have had to order something else and that didn't happen.

I can't speak to the tea, but the nasty imitation syrup isn't limited to NCL. I've started bringing my own bottle of maple. I'm also bringing my own fresh coffee beans, hand grinder and pour-over brewer. I've yet to have a decent cup of coffee on a ship. Well... Costa did have good cappuccinos.

  4. Another note: If you enjoy dining with other couples, you can request to be seated at a larger table with other passengers. We did that and ended up meeting several couples that we really enjoyed. One of those couples started meeting us for dinner every night. It was nice. :)

  5.

I probably won't do a future cruise. I feel like I will miss out on a good deal from a different travel agent /website. For example, I got this $100 plus free UBP from Expedia. NCL was only offering $50 or UBP, not both.

FYI - You don't have to book directly with NCL to use the deposit deal. You can book with any agent or website, then just call the # on your certificate and NCL will refund you the $250.

  6. Let's hope Bayamo is included with the UDP and not an extra charge in addition to UDP like Ocean Blue is on the Getaway and Breakaway. Bayamo, Food Republic, and Pincho Tapas Bar sounds wonderful!

If I had to guess, I'd say for certain Food Republic and Pincho Tapas Bar are not included with UDP because they are a la carte (I believe the UDP excludes all a la carte dining?). And I would probably assume that Bayamo is excluded as well. :( We opted for the UBP, but we'll probably try a couple of the specialty restaurants, anyway. We dined at Le Bistro on the Sun and it was incredible... definitely worth the up-charge!

  7. If you look at the Escape page on NCL's website, under the dining page you can click either complimentary or specialty, and it will highlight which restaurants are included in each. There is a ton of info there, that I enjoy investigating. Many people here are throwing a fit at people posting links, but I thought you might enjoy: http://escape.ncl.com/dining#all

    Included restaurants are:

    Margaritaville

    Taste

    Savor

    Manhattan Room

    O'Sheehan's

    Garden Cafe

    Specialty restaurants are:

    Bayamo

    Teppanyaki

    Le Bistro

    Cagney's

    La Cucina

    Moderno

    Pincho Tapas

    Food Republic

    Perfect! Thank you!

I thought I read that The Cellars and The District Brew House would have small plates or something? It seemed like The Cellars would be a la carte, but I couldn't tell from the description if food items at the Brew House would be complimentary.

  8. I read about how tourists get offered 'ganja' a lot in Jamaica and I am fortunate that no one ever offered me any. As for the the super pushy salesman, it's like I love to buy stuff and help the economy (or not?) but trying to sell using underhanded tactics along with extreme pushiness, no thanks!

On our last cruise that went to Ocho Rios, my husband was offered an 8-ball while walking with me and pushing our then-2 year old in a stroller. On our first cruise that went to Jamaica (which was my first cruise), I was practically kidnapped to have my hair braided. They refused to tell me how much it cost, so I got up after two braids. It was $2 per braid, which would have equated to around $200 for my entire head.

Between those incidents, the politics and the general level of visceral unease I have in the port area, we try to avoid Ocho Rios. Which is unfortunate, because the island itself is beautiful, and so are most of the people there.

  9. We love Trunk Bay for snorkeling and just a beach day... you'll have to take a taxi and the ferry from St. Thomas to St. John. It's allegedly one of the top 10 most beautiful beaches in the world... and I believe it. There's a snorkel trail, and you're likely to spot some sea turtles.

In St. Maarten, I recommend Pinel Island. Again, you'll have to take a taxi and a water taxi to get there. The water is fairly shallow, crystal clear and calm, and there is an abundance of beach chairs available. There are also drinks/snacks and gifts available for purchase. The snorkeling won't be great because there's no coral, but you'll be hard-pressed to find a good snorkel spot on St. Maarten unless you're on a boat excursion.

  10. As much as I'd love to read through 49 pages of posts, I really don't have time... so can someone tell me if there's a comprehensive list of which restaurants are included in your cruise fare and which are an additional charge?

On a related note, I'm a little confused by the Supper Club... will it be an upcharge dinner show, similar to Cirque and Illusionarium?

    TIA!

  11. We are doing the Pearl 11 day Southern Caribbean on March 26, 2015. There must be cabins available, as we keep getting people on our roll call, who have just booked. There is still time to come along!

Unfortunately, they aren't doing any similar itineraries in 2016, which is what we're looking for. :( We saw that Gem is supposed to do some sailings out of San Juan in 2016, but they are 7 days.

  12. On our last 10 day cruise, we brought 10 bottles. $15 corkage per bottle. Don't bother trying to hide them, they WILL be found. But once your bottle has been opened, the server will gladly have it stored for you (if you like) to be served in ANY of the ship restaurants when you're ready. Or you can take it with you. We found it to be worth the $15 for us to bring wine that we enjoy, that would cost twice as much on the ship.

  13. My husband and I have sailed on a couple of the longer, southern Caribbean itineraries on the Dawn and Sun, and we felt like they were perfect kid-free vacations for us. We booked the Escape for the whole family this December, but when we looked for an early spring 10-11 day trip for the two of us, there were none to be found. This is SO disappointing!!!

My very favorite cruise so far was 10 days on the Sun in 2013. I'm sure the Escape will be loads of fun and beautiful, but I loved the relative intimacy of the Sun, the longer itinerary and those southern ports. :(

The first two photos and cat. are ocenview picture windows....

The next two photos are ocenview porthole windows

These pictures aren't accurate for Sun. We had a porthole on Sun, on Deck 4. It was a "free upgrade" and I was disappointed... until we actually boarded and saw it. It is HUGE, and there's a nice shelf space right below it. It was directly over the bed, so my husband and I would get on our knees and peek out of it... we could both fit our elbows and heads in it at the same time. And since we were forward and on a port-intensive cruise, it was extremely convenient for disembarking and embarking on port days. I'll see if I can find a picture...

  15. In Curaçao, Irie Tour is great fun and priced well.... Pictures on page 2 & 3...

We also did Irie Tour in Curacao! You CANNOT beat the price, it was a lot of fun, and at the beach stop (a pay beach, but included in the tour price!) they gave us the option to stay an hour, or to stay two hours. They made two trips from the beach back to the ship to accommodate everyone.

The guides were informative and fun, and they were very happy to distribute LOTS of beer, sodas and water. My husband drank a couple of sixers, at least.

  16. If you have alternatives for rooms, see if you can get on Deck 6 or 7. Those decks do NOT have any public areas above or below and are therefore very quiet.

    Andy

We're on deck 6, in cabin 6435 - and it looks like we're right above the casino... can that be right??? :(
