  1. Hi Danish Viking (or anyone else with an opinion)' date='

We are looking to book a hotel for 3 nights in mid-July, Sunday through Wednesday. We are looking at the Axel Guldsmeden and the Best Western Hebron. Do you have any opinions about which is better between these two (setting aside the price)? Is there another hotel in this area of similar quality that you would recommend instead of one of these two?

    Thanks in advance.[/quote']

Look at the reviews on TripAdvisor.

  2. Btw if any of you still needs to book a flight then here you will find any route offerings from North America to CPH.

    San Francisco with Scandinavian Airlines

    Los Angeles with Norwegian

    Chicago with Scandinavian Airlines

    Toronto with Air Canada

    Washington-Dulles with Scandinavian Airlines

    Fort Lauderdale with Norwegian

    Orlando with Norwegian

New York-Newark with Scandinavian Airlines (2 daily departures during the summer)

New York-JFK with both Delta and Norwegian.

Scandinavian Airlines uses Airbus A330 and A340 and they are all getting new seats and interior starting with the CPH Newark route in February.

It included Hästens bed linen and lie flat beds in business class.

Norwegian uses Boeing 787 Dreamliners on all routes but can sometimes be replaced with other planes.

    Delta uses a Boeing 757 or 767, can't remember.

Air Canada flies daily during the summer with a Boeing 787 dreamliner.

Have you ever taken the train from Hamburg that gets loaded onto a ferry (to cross from Germany into Denmark)> If so, what was your experience like?

  3. On my booking confirmation it is written as "08 Sept 2015".

I can certainly understand how a mistake can be made if using just numbers. Some people put the month first other people put the day first and as you mentioned Europe is a day ahead due to time zones. Very confusing for sure.

Good advise to check booking dates.

My concern is... my travel agent can't seem to get a reply from BCN Travel for a correction and the assurance that I'll have a car/driver waiting for me when I arrive in Barcelona.

Hopefully BCN Travel will reply soon or I'll just have to chalk it up to live and learn and warn others that they might not be a good choice.

    Thank You for your thoughts.

    Pat

Have your travel agent give them a call rather than using email. If your agent has already tried to call with no luck, you may have to get a different taxi company. If BCN Travel winds up charging your credit card, you can always dispute it with the CC company, and they will refund your money.

  4. We will be disembarking our Royal Princess cruise in Warnemunde May 4, 2016 and heading to Berlin were we plan to stay for 3 days before heading to Munich for about 5 days. I understand there is a national holiday of some kind during some of this time and wonder how this will impact us. Will museums be opened and how will this affect transportation and train schedules?

Any information would be helpful. We may use the ships transferr for our train to Berlin so that we do not have to worry about our hauling our luggage. We have not yet booked our hotels so any suggestions would be helpful too.

The Rick Steves Guidebook recommends staying in the East Berlin neighborhood of Prenzlauer Berg. Just do a search in this neighborhood on Trip Advisor.

  5. I booked transportation for 2 from and to the airport using Viator. I am treating myself for my birthday. They get very good reviews and I used them to also book my brother's round trip transport in Hawaii. They seem to be everywhere.

Keep in mind that Viator is a broker. They do NOT own their own taxis. Thus, the company they use in Hawaii is a different company from the one thay use in Barcelona. Don't just assume you will get the same great service you received in Hawaii. Do some research first.

  6. Are you actually docking in Hamburg or are in docking in Kiel (for Hamburg)?

If you are docking in Hamburg, then it might be possible to take the train to Berlin for the day, provided you have a long stay in Hamburg. If your time in port in not long enough for Berlin, then I'd recommend taking the train to Luebeck.

If you are docking in Kiel, you are much too far from Berlin for a daytrip by train, but not too far to go to Luebeck by train. (Travelanni has provided in train times earlier in this thread.) We made this daytrip on our recent Baltic Cruise when we docked in Kiel and it was a wonderful day! (Our friends who stayed in Kiel said they had a disappointing day; we had an enchanting day in Luebeck.)

How far is Luebeck from Hamburg, by train? What's in Luebeck to do?

  7. Does anyone know if the Aerobus ticket machine at the airport takes American credit cards (either chip and signature or the old magnetic stripe and signature), or do they require the pin and chip card (which none of the US credit cards are currently doing)?

  8. We are on a Princess Cruise that is docking in Hamburg and would like to go into Berlin. Is that too long of a ride, are there tour companies that would take you from Hamburg to Berlin?

Is the Berlin Wall really worth the trip or would we be better seeing the sights of Hamburg? This is our first trip to Germany.

Thanks in advance for all your help.

The high speed ICE train takes 1 hour 45 minutes to get from Hamburg to Berlin. The regional trains take much longer.

  9. Hi, thank you for your appreciation.

If you look at the thread 'Is Berlin worth 6 hours on a bus', post #6 by 'dogs4fun' you will find a description of how they took a tour and arranged to be dropped at the Pergamon museum while the others had lunch. I would be interested to know how they managed the tickets as I understood that, during the high season, you have to book in advance and be given a time slot but maybe I'm wrong. I am fortunate in being able to visit out of season.

It all depends really on how much time you have and where you have free time. If it is in the Kurfurstendam area for shopping then there is not much in the way of museums. If, however, it is in the area of the Jewish Holocaust Memorial where there are souvenir shops and cafes then there is a fascinating little exhibition on Hitlers plan for Berlin after the war. It was truly amazing.

The most important museums are on Unter den Linden and Museum Island and really require more than a couple of hours.

It might be an idea to discuss this with your tour company, they may be able to suggest a museum which would fit in with the tour and make best use of your time.

    Happy planning and cruising :)

The planning and getting there is half the fun of the holiday.

    Hi Anni,

My DW and I are planning to spend 5-7 days pre-cruise in Germany next year (2016). We plan to fly from the USA to Berlin, stay 3 nights, take the train to Hamburg and stay 1-2 nights, then take the train to Copenhagen and stay 1-2 nights. We board the ship in Copenhagen. The only "must-see" on our agenda is a performance of the Berlin Philharmonic. Any suggestions regarding hotels, trains, tours, etc. would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks.

  10. Available everywhere. The chocolate comes ready mixed - very thick and dark so doubt it is milk chocolate based. Will look on a carton for you when we go to the supermarket.

You can have Churros with Coffee - just as acceptable as with chocolate and we prefer this as the chocolate is very sweet.

No offense, but I cannot stand coffee.

  11. We live mid-way between Malaga and Granada and know the city of Malaga well.

If anyone visiting Malaga on a cruise has any questions I will be happy to do my best to help - the city is not great at promoting itself which is such a shame as it has so much to offer.

I have never been to Malaga, but visited Torremolinos in the late 1970s and was not impressed. I had spent 10 weeks in Seville, and loved it. However, Torremolinos seemed to be trying to be more American than Spanish--which was a turn-off to me.Is Malaga better than Torremolinos?

  12. It would help if you could focus your particular interests. You mentioned a difficulty with lots of stairs. Do you have mobility issues that would limit the amount of walking you can do? Boston is a small city and one way to see a particular section is by walking.

The subway has a lot of accessible stations with elevators and escalators, but you have to have a plan if you want to avoid stairs.

Did you mention the exact date and day of the week you would be doing this?

If you are concerned about the number of folks trying to get on the trolley near Black Falcon Terminal, you could take a cab to Faneuil Hall and get on the trolley at Stop 1 instead of trying to get on the trolley at Black Falcon. The trolley which picks up at Black Falcon takes everyone to Faneuil Hall where they transfer to the main trolley line, so if you disembark early you may be able to bypass the crowds.

We can walk up to half a mile without sitting down for a rest. We definitely want to go to the Market at Faneuil Hall. We also wanted to get a lobster roll at James Hook and Company.

We will be there on Sunday, May 4.

I'm not sure about the trolley. There are several different companies, but they all seem to be expensive for what you get.

  13. Our cruise ship will be stopping in Boston on a Sunday in early May. Several Cruise Critic folks (on our roll call) are talking about taking a hop-on, hop-off Trolley that stops near the Black Falcon Cruise Terminal. I'm concerned with 2,500 people exiting the ship that the trolleys will be overwhelmed, and there will be a long wait before we can board a trolley. Has anyone had experience using a trolley that stopped near the Cruise Terminal?

If this is a bad option, do any Boston residents have a better suggestion (we are NOT history buffs)? We cannot do many stairs (does the subway have stairs only or an elevator?).

    Thanks for your help.

  14. I understand and agree with you. Glowing reviews are well-earned! I am sooooooooooo excited to be going to Alaska and want to find out all I can before we head up there!;) Will start in Fairbanks and go down from there, visiting Anchorage and Denali for sure! Only port excursions planned are the whale watch with GW in ISP and renting a green jeep in Skagway to drive up through the Yukon to Emerald Lake! Really excited about that one! Then will stay 2 days in Vancouver and train to Seattle for 2 more days, and then home! Two weeks total! Can't wait for this trip!

Be careful driving a Jeep up around Emerald Lake. There are lots of bears up there that think nothing of crossing the highway and investigating vehicles that stop for pictures.

  15. Want to go on a whale watching tour in Hoonah.

Looking at: Misty Bay Lodge, Hoonah charter Adventures and Glacier Winds.

Which one does the best job? Active talkative captain? Nice boat? Snacks?

Has any of these companies do other tours combined with whale watching?

Are there bears to be seen the end of May in Hoonah?

    Appreciate the feedback. Thanks

May is NOT a good time to see whales and especially not a good time to see bears -- still too cold. The end of June through the end of July are the best times to see all kinds of wildlife.

  16. For us and our needs it's all about comfort and experience. I couldn't possibly give up the hotel in New Forest! It's just so ENGLISH! LOL No, in all seriousness, since I won the cruise, I honestly don't mind going the extra expense for the tour by car to the perfect hotel.

    Thanks again!

You might want to look at the reviews for the Brockenhurst Hotel in New Forest (see link below). They are NOT very good.
