  1. Thanks for all of the responses everyone! I will give the info to my trainer tomorrow and let him figure out ways to torture me on the trip. :) My daughter is 14, and neither of us want to lose what we are able to achieve before we go! Two weeks is a long time to be on the ship eating whatever we want. :)

BTW, I'm sure I will lift some of the 16 oz dumbbells y'all are talking about at least a few times on the ship!

    Have a great weekend everyone!

  2. Can anyone that's been on the Crown Princess recently tell me the equipment they have in the gym? My daughter and I just started working with a personal trainer, and he's going to work out a plan for us while we're on for two weeks in June. I'm guessing they have the basic equipment like treadmills and elliptical machines, but needing to know what type of weight machines they have for him.

    Thanks in advance,

    T

  3. Good evening everyone! First and foremost, I so appreciate all of the recommendations and photos and experiences some of you have shared of your travels to Marseile - Arles, Les Baux, St. Remy & Avignon. So much so that this port stop is completely consuming all of my thoughts!

So my question to a few of you that have already been:

Hlitner, Caripoo, MsKaufman, and Marazul -- from what I read it sounds as though you have each spent considerable amounts of time in each of these places, so perhaps not necessarily just one day. Would you say it is possible to get to see all four places completely DIY via cabs from our ship? I have now spent my free time in the evening for almost two weeks trying to put together a group with one of the major tour companies and have had no luck. Any recommendations as to how to get around? Do you think a tour is absolutely necessary? Even if my husband can get to two of the towns on our own, we would be so pleased.

NYBumpkin -- I read that you have toured with ItalyTours before and I think this Marseile - Arles, Les Baux, St. Remy & Avignon tour specifically? I have been corresponding with them almost ad nauseum it seems and just can't seem to reach a happy medium where we officially book the tour but with even a fraction of a discount. It'd be a private group of 5, two of us and 3 additional which we have yet to find to offset the cost. I'm not quite ready to throw in the towel and just pay the full tour fare for just the two of us, but wanted to ask you if you thought it'd be worth it? Any additional selling points on the tour?

I value everyone's thoughts and all you've so willingly shared thus far! Thanks so much!

    INEZ

I'm having the same problem with the port. There are 4 in our group, and we are considering doing the Arles, Les Baux, St. Remy and Avignon route--except for I really would love to see the lavender in bloom. If your tour your working on would hold 4 instead of 3, we might go with you. T

P.S. Just realized I posted this, and I WASN'T in my roll call thread. :) Sorry. Any chance you're going to be on a Princess cruise in June?

  4. Yes, very much. We booked Phidias Piraeus Hotel, close to the marina. Excellent service, friendly and very helpful. Many restaurants & shops within walking distance. Highly recommended.

    John

    John,

Thanks for the information! We may do that for an easy stop.

    Thanks again!

  5. Thank you Brunello, our cruise starts Sept. 12, 2016. We did book a hotel in Piraeus.

    John

    John,

I've considered staying in Piraeus after our cruise for one night. Did you like staying there?

  6. We stayed at a wonderful AirBnB about a block from the Acropolis Museum, Athens Gate, and the Acropolis. We loved it.

Fully updated and clean. Bedroom, Livingroom with pullout couch, kitchen, bathroom w/shower.

Host provided lots of information about sites and arranged transportation when we arrived from Atlanta at 9pm (he had his driver waiting with a sign) - we appreciated this SOO much after that long flight! Also arranged for the same driver to take us to the port 2 days later.

Athens is wonderfully safe. We are two women who were still walking (along with 100's of families) back to the apartment at 1130 at night.

If you want info...not sure I can post here - you can email me at: Panamoka1958 at yahoo dot com.

Any chance you remember the name of the AirBNB you stayed with for that trip? I prefer using them.

  7. Well, how long did it take you to get out of HOU airport.

From your post above, AA & other airlines at JFK's T-8 are busy with int'l arrivals & departures all day, evening & into the night; and, as the largest terminal with 2 "banks" of gates - they will have more than 1 or 2 CBP agents working, airport ops quoting the capacity to process 1,600 pax per hour ... sounds good, but that's about 5 or 6 jumbo wide-body jets landing hourly and not that difficult to overwhelm the systems.

Anyway, the connection is supposed to be fine with a 4 hour window and you have about 5 hours in total ... assuming the flight is on time and not significantly delayed. You SHOULD be able to deplane, get thru APC area under CBP, wait & retrieve your luggage (unless doing just carry-on) and then, proceed past custom inspection area out to ground transportation ... in 2 hours, I would add extra 30 minutes for walking, taxi lines & luggage & gate delays, and possible FAA ground stops, etc. Your flight looked to be a 777 and if you are in the back section of the bird, deplaning could take + 10 or 15 minutes, while those in F & J/B get to walk off ahead of those in coach.

The drive from JFK to LGA - Southwest is Central Terminal or T-B - should be 45 to 60 minutes for the afternoon rush hour ... (unless there is an afternoon NY Mets baseball game nearby, causing more delays) putting you, hopefully, curbside at LGA no later than 4:30 PM, run inside - get your luggage dropped off, go thru TSA & then a short walk to the gate.

Unless weather is a factor or there's a major traffic incident on the highways between the airports - for simplicity, I would stick with yellow taxi (fares/tips, should run $45 to $55 at most) and they will be outside with a dispatcher working the taxi line, keeping things moving along nicely.

AirTrain to Jamaica Station, transfer to the E subway line, and then the SBS Q70 bus from Woodside/Jackson Heights in Queens to LGA is best for someone familiar NY's mass transit & done it before, and comfortable doing all that with luggage in tow, using escalators & elevators - last thing to worry about "how to" in getting a receipt before boarding the SBS bus ... as that last mile before LGA is where the traffic/airport congestion is most unpredictable (lately, it seemed fine) - folks have been known to get out of their taxis, car services & walk/run to the terminals to avoid possibly missing their flights.

Google Maps/Navigation & Waze on a smart/iPhone will give you a good estimate of your connecting options and best ETA as you land - and plot alternative plans if warranted - check that before you deplane & enter the CBP area, or, you will have to wait until you get beyond the secured area to get an update.

Good luck & feel free to ask and do come back & share your success story, hopefully, a smooth trip getting home.

Thanks again for the input. Sounds like it should be okay. Will take your advice and do a cab to LGA, since I will have my 74 year old mother and 14 year old daughter in tow. 😜

We had 1 1/2 hours from landing time to end of boarding time in Houston and made it with 5 minutes to spare. After enough people complained in immigrations. They finally opened another booth, and we were close to the front of the line. 😊

  8. One more thought, I did allow two hours to make it through customs and immigration. Was hoping that since it was in the middle of the day they might have all of the immigration booths working. We just came through Houston's immigration this week at 7 pm and they had ONE agent working for all of the US citizens. It was infuriating.

  9. Well, don't know if you have global entry or not and which airline/terminal @JFK, typical time is 90 minutes to 2 hours after a/c taxied to the gate, doors disarmed & pax start to deplane ... automated passport kiosk, then - often a wait for luggage, before proceeding to exit. Midday is a very busy time for oversea arrivals into many JFK terminals.

That would put your transfer to LGA's start time around 3 PM - car service is a flat rate, taxi is metered rate ... in the busy afternoon rush hour (is this a weekend or weekday, roads/traffic is, worst) to LGA, plan trip time is 45 to 60 minutes, that should get you to the terminal for dropoff about 4 PM - do luggage drop, get thru TSA and short walk to the plane's gate.

Is this booked on a single ticket in transit or 2 totally different PNR, etc. in case of delays or whatever ?? As it is, within airline's acceptable cutoff for the transfer - with under 1 hour for delays ... weather is a big unknown.

Thanks for your response. We are on a nonstop flight into JFK from Barcelona on FinnAir operated by American. The flight from LaGuardia is booked separately on Southwest. I can still change the southwest section if I need to, would just prefer to get home that night as opposed to the next day. Figure I will be wiped from jet lag. 🙃

If necessary, I can do the subway or Uber or whatever works best to get to LaGuardia.

    Thanks for your input!

  10. Nothing could be further from the truth. All you have to do is stay in the tourist areas, and away from most of the east end of the island.

The country is not at all unstable, nor are there lots of protests and violence.

Actually, the country is very unstable. Especially during an election year--I don't think this is an election year for them. Whenever we visit my family in Tegucigalpa, they won't let me go anywhere alone, because it's so bad. However, the island of Roatan isn't nearly as bad as the main land. They're going to make sure it's not, because it's bringing in tourism dollars. They can't afford to NOT keep it safe.

  11. I'm just curious--ya'll have mentioned that they don't have the beach beds any longer, but they're website, still shows beach beds--is the website just out of date?
