  1. We sailed on Harmony of the Seas the week of August 4th and my sister in law did the Caring Excursion in Puerto Rico. She wanted to share her experience -

I did the caring excursion with my 19-year old son on August 15, 2018 and it was a great experience.

The getshopped PR group that runs the tour has worked diligently with the La Perla community - a very impoverished yet extremely private neighborhood / community.

The day we were there, our sub-team of 4 out of 20 total, were assigned to the greenhouse. Although it was HOT, we really felt that we made a good contribution to helping out the community. The rest of the group were assigned other gardening tasks. Each group is assigned something based on the true needs of the community.

We also learned some history and had an authentic Puerto Rican lunch at a family owned restaurant that was recently reopened.

We were told by getshopped PR that 100% of the fee that Royal Caribbean charges goes to the restaurant (for lunch) or to the La Perla community or to the bus for the transportation

  3. If you are on Harmony or any of the Quantum class ships, you can oay $8 per device per cruise and get texting ability. These ships are also currently exhibiting a hole in the firewall that allows iMessage texting for free, but that can end at any time.

Any other ship would currently require either the purchase of an internet package or pay your cell carrier $0.50 per text if you have AT&T or Verizon.

How do you sign up for the $8 per device for texting ability? On the ship or can you do it in advance?

  4. In your situation we would want to deal with a decent cruise agency where you can get an agent experienced in dealing with small groups. If you shop around among a few reputable agencies should be able to get at least 7-10% in On Board Credits (that you will not get by booking directly with the cruise line) and some help with cabin selection. You may also be able to get an additional discount because of the size of your group (not sure of the criteria used by MSC). Unfortunately, CC rules prohibit me from recommending an agency (or agent) but there are some good ones out in the ether.

But be forewarned. You are taking on what can become a thankless task (depending on your family members). You are going to need to gather credit card info from each person (couple) and, if anything goes wrong, it will be your fault :(. We have seen many family groups on cruises that had a great time. We have also seen families on the verge of tossing each other overboard :(. And consider dining arrangements...because a group that size cannot eat at the same table. Are you all going to want to dine at the same time (together) every night? Will you want to be together in all the ports? etc etc. Planning group trips can become a near full time profession...which sometimes requires the patience of a real angel. Good luck :).

Hi Hank, thank you for the info. Can you possibly email me some recommendations? kbelsky@verizon.net.
