  1. full disclosure - this time we're not taking a cruise. we're flying in for a week the last week of June (though be have cruised to Bermuda before). But CC has been so helpful in the past, this seemed like to best way to get advice

Our 17 year old wants to snorkel around a wreck (i mean, who doesn't?). It looks like the Vixen is not an ideal spot (too many boats in june).

    Any suggestions?

    thanks

  2. Depending on what you are looking to do, as was said, in Newport and Bar harbor, the tenders drop you off in an area that you can walk around in. Both are nice cities and you can find a few things to do. But if you want to get out of town, like to Arcadia National Park in Bar Harbor, then you need some sort of tour. In Newport, if you make your way to the visitors center, you can ride the trolley or bus to several areas that are very interesting, like the Mansions, the Cliff Walk etc. They are not complicated to do.

    Cheers

    Len

actually, you can take the shuttle to Acadia (since we're being picky about spelling, there's no R in Acadia) http://www.exploreacadia.com/

    much cheaper than a tour

  3. On my last cruise, I took my kindle (rev 1). I spent months picking books and had it fully loaded. It was a disaster (for me). I had a hard time reading on my back while in the sun and wasn't able to relax with it as I can a book (less flexible). It was the end of my "kindle honeymoon."

I ended up giving it away 6 months later. This upcoming cruise, paperbacks all around

FWIW - I haven't given up on the idea of an e-book. The color nook looks interesting

  4. The thing about the galley tour (we've done it twice on the pride's sister ship, Miracle) is that your experience depends on the number of people who show up. With a smaller crowd, you can take your time and watch the food prep, ice/fruit carvings, etc.

When there's a long line, they rush you through

  5. Thanks. i've done my research on the port tempteratures. I was more curious about the sea days.

that weather is very iffy. in 2006 we went there and it was 52 degrees.

It made history as an all time low.

if you look at this history calender you will see that it is all over the place for the weeks in February/

  6. Scubagrrl,

    I'm sorry for your loss.

While my DH and I have ben to Nassau on a couple occasions, this Feb will be our 6 year old daughter's first trip. i would like to her to see more in the bahamas than s theme park. Otherwise, why bother to go there?

Other than possibly getting her hair braided... Do you have any ideas of family friendly places where she can get a glimpse at Bahaman life?

    Thank you!

  7. Two of my favorite book categories!

I could come up with a zillion bio and mystery recommendations and can seceond several already suggested.

On my last cruise, I brought 35 books (all shoved into my kindle e-book). I really enjoyed "All fishermen are liars" by Linda Greenlaw. Something about reading about life on the sea while on the sea was perfect.

If you like Carl hiassen, Tim Dorsey is a nice complement.

  8. On a cruise to the Bahamas, my DH walked around Nassau exploring. I got it into my head that we should grab one of those discarded conch shells on the coast. Little did I know that people make a living collecting those, cleaning them, and selling them to souvenier shops. I realized this rather quickly when a local started eyeballing our movements. I rather quckly grabbed (and showed him) a broken, dinged up shell

Brought it home in our luggage (which could be argued was a violation of customs laws). All was done in ignorance, but every time I see the shell I smile at how clueless - and lucky - I was.

That broken shell means more to me than any postcard/book/tshirt.
