  1. I just got off a flight this weekend that had its departure delayed for 45 min (after we were on the plane). Several other flights were cancelled due to issues in other cities. Then upon arriving there was a 10-15 min wait to depart the plane. Due to that total delay of an hour some people missed connecting flights. Then I had 15-20 minutes before the luggage started coming out for pickup-even longer for my bags to actually arrive.

Going to catch your cruise with a planned arrival of 1pm-that is way too close even with a direct flight. If you have a connection even more could go wrong.

  2. Thinks. I will play it safe. I just read a story about a family that arrived 6 hours late on the day of boarding-an hour before the cutoff for boarding the cruise. Of course they were traveling from the U.S. but no need to cause myself unnecessary stress.

We are spending 2 days post cruise in Rome but I'm sure we can find something to do that morning before heading to port. Or we may just rest and sleep in that morning. Thanks again

  3. I've just seen some postings of people arriving on early morning flights as the departures are quite late. There are even excursions/tours centered around it (pick up at airport, 3 hour city tour, and then on to port. Also there being a lack of connecting flights reduces the chance for issues.

Having said that, I'm risking a lot of money if something goes wrong.....and anything is possible. I guess I will probably continue to play it safe and do as I always do and arrive the night before.

    Thanks

  4. As am experienced cruiser (9) I can't believe I'm about to ask this but here goes.....

I am taking the NCL epic out of Rome in mid May on a Wed. Prior to that I will spend a few days in Paris and London. (I've been to London once for 3 days in December alone, this time my 21 year old son wants to go prior to our cruise).

The cruise departs at 7pm on Wednesday. It is a 2 1/2 direct flight from London, and of course a 1-1/2 hour drive to the port after going thru customs and picking up luggage.

I am considering flying into Rome Early Wednesday morning and taking private transport to the port.

    Is that too risky?

I have always flown in a day ahead of time for all other cruises I've taken although for ones within driving distance (an hour away) I have left that same morning.

Thoughts regarding the risk since it's such a shirt flight from London to Rome? I've seen some tours/connections for the cruise that have advertised 1:30 as the latest arrival time into the airport for a cruise leaving that evening.

Other option of course is to fly in the night before and hopefully the hotel in London will hold our luggage all day after checkout while we continue to tour the city.

    Thanks for your advise.

  5. I'm looking at a cruise for myself and my son. After his first year of college we went on a cruise out of Galveston in mid May before the prices increased/before regular school was dismissed for the year. The first 2 days of the cruise he nearly drove me crazy hanging around the room watching tv because he couldn't find anyone his age-that awkward cruise age between 18-20. Not to mention that the overall age demographic on the cruise was older than what we were used to. (I'm a single mom late 30's, quiet, he's a very social outgoing child)

I'm considering a cruise of of Miami this time, around May 11th-literally the day after college gets out. He will be 21. For those who may have taken early May cruises out of Miami, is there a decent amount of young college age adults? Or does the age still trend higher even in Florida since it's so early in May?

We've been on about 9 cruises, so we've been to most of the standard E, S, and W Caribbean islands. I wanted to do something different this time around. (Aruba, Grand Turk, La Romana, Dominican Republic, and Curaçao)The itinerary is only offered a few times a year-it's offered 1-2x a month during the summer but he may attend summer classes to get ahead. Not to mention its $400/pp cheaper In May,

Any personal experience on early May cruises? If he will be bored out of his mind we will find something else to do.

    Thanks!

  6. My next cruise is on the Oasis next year (not sure if it's in my signature). Is there an option for turkey sausage or egg whites on the cruise, perhaps in the main dining room?

I am unable to eat any grains (wheat, barley, rye, corn, rice), nor egg yolks or pork. So no bread, grits, omelets, bacon, cereal, anything breaded, etc. - that doesn't leave a lot of breakfast options. Gluten free doesn't work because usually rice or corn is substituted as a grain.

I'm hoping by the time of the cruise I can try to reintroduce some of these foods with no reactions but I'm trying to make other plans.

I know fruit is always am option but I really prefer hot breakfasts. But if there aren't any other options, it won't be the end of the world!

    Thanks
