  1. Always book our own air - better times for flights and less hassle if you have to use their insurance on flights to get home if there is a problem. AMA requires a deposit of $400 pp for Europe cruises.

  2. Thanks so much for the information. This is our first river cruise and we are so looking forward to seeing this part of the world. My goal is to pack under 40 pounds so I have room for gifts. Anything special I should be looking to purchase? My husband is looking forward to the local beers and wines.

  3. Hi fellow travelers, We are leaving on the Prima on May 5th and beginning to think about what to pack in terms of clothes. We understand that it will be rainy and cool - so we need layers for warmth. I read the other posts that they have laundry service - does anyone remember cost for jeans, tops and dress shirts? Thanks

  4. WE were just on the Grand in January and participated in the boat building contest. We came in 2nd and had so much fun. The completed boat must be able to hold a six pack of beer. The materials are to come from around the ship or things you may have in your suitcase or can ask the cabin stewards for. The boats have to be able to be pulled by a string (provided by crew) in the pool from one end and then back w/o sinking. Some contestants use water bottles, the tray from their room, balloons, duck tape - the more creative the better. The winner is chosen by fellow passengers through their applause and cheering. The winner gets the 6 pack of beer and bragging rights. The contest is held on way out and their were 6 teams total. Our team had 6 members. You will need a team name and captain. We took tons of pictures of this event.

There is also the egg dropping contest on the way home. Where you have to drop an egg from the 6th deck to the 4th deck w/o breaking. The ship provides the egg. This contest had a lot more participates.

There is a scavenger hunt - where the crew gives you a list of objects and you have 10 minutes to find as many as you can and return to starting point w/in this time frame or get penalized. No more than 6 to a team. We had a team of 2 and we won this one.

There are two opportunities to make lei's but you need to sign up in advance. On the way out the lei's are made with fresh flowers on the way back they are made of ribbons.

This cruise there are a lot of opportunities to meet other people and participate in many events as you are at sea for so many days. We were on a ship that had a man overboard so we spent an extra two days at sea.

    Hope this helps.

  5. We are taking our first river cruise on AMA this May (Amsterdam to Budapest) and we decided to try river cruising as we wanted a great itinerary and a trip that we did not have to plan our own shore excursions. On ocean cruises we always did private tours. We are hoping by it reputations AMA will have a great staff, food and bedding. Thus far our dealings with AMA have been outstanding.

  6. G'evening fellow travelers, I have been reading on line what the average temperatures for this AMA cruise may be but depending on what site you read they are all different. We were thinking lots of layers and rain gear but will we need hats, gloves, scarfs? I have hiking water proof boots and cozy socks. We were not planning on bringing "formal" wear.

As always your help, suggestions and thoughts are most appreciated.

  7. My husband and I are planning our first river cruise in Nov 2014 and thinking of Portugal. I have been reading both sites, Viking and Uniworld, and since we would like to go in early Nov or late October our choices are very limited. I am hoping that you can offer me insight on both of these river cruise companies to help me lean toward one or the other cruises. It appears that the itineraries and cabins are similar but what about staff, food, shore excursions, extras. We will get our own air as we will arrive early and fly to Madrid after the cruise. We are active seniors and love to travel. Thanking you in advance for all of your insight on these two companies.
