many people think they got bitten by bedbugs when it can be something totally different. Also, remember they can be anywhere, hotel rooms for starters. If you do suspect you have been bitten, like mentioned tell house keeping. They will strip you room , stray, do whatever to clear the problem before it gets out of control. Also be sure to visit the ship doctor asap. They can identify a real bedbug bite when most of us can not. I will add, with all the days of cruising we have been lucky, never had a bite. We have had problems with sand fleas and similar creatures that resemble bed bug bites only can be much worse.

Sand Fleas are the WORST!!! I have gotten bitten from them b4 I live in FLA and we have had them a few times around here not fun

These "sail away" rates are also being used by the airlines.  American Airlines has a similar budget bottom price where you sit in the last row, are first to get bumped, and cant change your flight without additional fees, etc.  They want to scare you into booking the higher class.

Now if NCL would only come up with a sail away rate for Haven cabins. I could do without a butler, concierge and priority embarkation for a 20% reduction :classic_tongue:

I would down for that discount!!! Too I will say the with the reduced air I am getting on a Sept 2020 Med sailing is awesome!!

Before jumping on one post, you should read the rest of the thread. My wife is not alone.

I don't need to jump. I get what you mean about the up charge for Gray Goose. But again if I give you a true blind taste test or anyone else who thinks they can pick which vodka brand they are drinking most will get it wrong. Shockingly wrong at that. Go to a bar and pick any 5 vodkas no flavors just straight up vodkas and see if you can taste the difference. That is my point is it a little tong and cheek what I wrote yes. But again I can see how that is frustrating that they have priced it above that 15 min and not having a fully stocked items. I would be too. Just talking about vodka

My wife likes Black Russians (vodka and Khalhua)  You can really taste the difference when it’s made with Grey Goose.

lol, so you can taste something that is meant to be order less, colorless and tasteless. From someone who used to sell alcohol to restaurants the vast and I do mean vast majority can not tell what they are drinking if it is served on the rocks. Let alone if you add a strong taste such a Kahlua. It is all about branding now I understand the issue you speak of. Taking that out of the picture it would take someone who has a plate so refined that they can pick up such minute difference that you up in the rang of a computer or should find themselves being a Sommelier as a profession. Now I am only talking about plain not flavored Vodka which again is meant to be Order less, Colorless, and Tasteless. So order a Titos and tell people it's Gray Goose.

  5. I understand what you mean about any place you go has crime. But for example I live in south fla. There are about 5 6 times as many people and understanding it all islands and what not. But I read the paper over there and I get the general consensus that it's things like this are talking place in areas where the population is dense. FreePort and Nassau. Now I am just estimating this but from what I have read it's like 70% more likely to happen those areas. When I was saying about walled off area I was talking about the secure cruise area. It just seems like the % to things like number of violent crimes. Shorting, murder, armed robbery. Ect. To number of people who live there is especially high.

And knowing that there are some parts of south fla are simply not nice at all.

  6. I live here.. I know what's been happening. with the number of tourist that visit here on a daily basis, the # of crimes against them are miniscule. And those that were targeted were mainly off on their own

As I said.. this could be any major city with a high population.

I can give u a link to similar links in my hometown paper as well. Crime is everywhere.

  7. Pretty funny telling Scubagirrl she doesn't know what she's talking about.

I have facts. She has opinions. I didn't mean it in a negative way.

  8. And we all know that. I know that when I go into the operating room as a patient. I know that when I board an airplane or a bus. I know that when I get on a cruise ship.

I'm not sure why you asked. You seem to have your mind made up that they are lacking in training and aren't really interested in other opinions.

    I disagree.

But would you agree that the first crew member was not trained correctly. Now the video does show two crew member who are clearly trained correctly and are acting how one should act when lives are on the line. But if one person is not trained right that just makes me ask how many crew members are not trained correctly and what if those just happen to be the people that are first or second responders.

    I disagree.

I am fine with other opinions and I have said repeatedly that I do not believe that all crew members are lacking in training. But I continue to point out how one person can make a difference and how that one person who is not trained right can effect everyone. Even those who are trained correctly.

  10. I'm pretty sure this is standard operating procedure in the entire cruise industry. I don't question the training of the Carnival crew or the crew of any cruise line for that matter and I feel safe on all cruise ships.

So it's standard procedure that you splash water on an electrical fire then try to rip the tv off the wall. Would you like other cases of crew not being trained correctly. I have read many different incidences where crewmembers react incorrectly to situations and then problems arise.

  11. I cannot see a positive reason to post it here. Anyone who sails on a cruise ship knows that the number one cause for concern is fire. You here it during the muster drill on every single sailing. Posting video of something that happened 2+ years ago that was arguably handled correctly other than an employee who came across the scene before trained fire estiguishing crew came and put the fire out does not serve any positive purpose.

I think all crews (not just Carnival), do a remarkable job in all aspects of their job including safety which is number 1 on the list. At times they put their lives on the line to protect the cruisers, themselves and the ship. Unless I knew all the facts, I would never assume to know what was or was not the right to do in any situation. I trust that the crusielines do. I'm not making excuses or casting blame, I was not there. I don't know all the facts. Trust me, all incidents are reviewed (by the cruiselines) and that is where corrective action takes place, not from posts on cruisecritic (and that includes the Concordia or the mythical airline pilot analogy). How do you know what gets reported or not? It's easy to throw stones. Just my opinion. I will move on now.

There was no mythical air line pilot it was a value jet crash.

  12. No one is saying it can't happen. I have no problem questioning training, but I don't see how one incident - which was minor and contained quickly even if we agree the first person didn't act correctly - is evidence of lack of training. And there have been several other incidents - all contained and no injuries. These incidents are inevitable and so far have been handled. To me, that indicates more of success in training than lack of training.

Your example of the airplane or bus does not compare to this situation. The fires were not caused by employee error. And their actions contained it. There are near misses in those all the time, most we never know about (just like you pointed out about cruising).

My larger point is how one person not reacting accordingly could cause a larger issue. This was a near miss but it could have been much worse. I posed this to you in the what if scenario. I am not playing the result I am taking the actuation of one person and highlighting how one person can possibly cause a larger incident.

  13. If you think cruise ships aren't safe, and crew aren't properly trained, don't sail. The rest of us will enjoy our cruises and take our risks.

I think there safe to a point. But is it so wrong for people to think that maybe this could happen and to question training of people that are there to help keep us safe.

  14. Agenda, much?

Ditto the others who have said that no matter how much training one has, you never know how they will react in the actual situation. This is true for ANY profession.

I hope u have the same reaction to something else like pilot error on a air plane. Or a bus driver who plows in to a parking garage killing people. All I am doing is trying to get you to think rationally rather than sticking your head in the sand and telling yourself that theses things can't happen. Also I do not hold any grudge against carnival I just did a 7 day on the Conquest and loved every second of it.

  15. Was there a fire on the Concordia? Are you a fire safety trainer? How do you know what training all crewmembers get? Are you an emplyoee pf the cruise line? Lastly, it seems to me you are stirring the pot, but thats just my opinion. There was a fire on the Ecstasy in 1988 also, but we probably dont have visoe of that one.

Fist thing my brother works on a cruise ship right now and he is at sea. Everyone on board has to take a fire safety training on a regular basis. I understand human nature and not every e has nerves of steel. But really these people are charged with keeping everyone and I mean everyone on board safe. There is so much that goes unreported about cruise ships. You wanna say I'm siring the pot then so be it. I bring things like this up to high light the lack of training that the crew has. I don't think it's a carnival problem only. I am posting this in the carnival form because it involved a carnival ship. Would you prefer I talk about the fire that happened aboard the Valor last week and how the fire prevention system sorta worked I say sorta because the fire spread to another cabin b4 it was complete put out. So maybe that crew member panicked maybe next time someone panic and the ship has to be abandoned. Lastly think about this would you be saying the same thing if an air plan crashes due to the pilot not responding correctly to a fire or an indecent on board. The idea that it's just human nature and not everyone is this and that is just an excuse people give to justify there believe that this is no big deal and I am siring the pot. If you really think about it public safety on a cruise ship is number one.

  16. Are "ALL" crewmembers trained in fire fighting skills though? My thoughts were that maybe that crew member was not a part of the fire response team and was maybe responding to the flooding. It did seem that the others were the Fire team and arrived prepared with the proper extinguishers.

I would think the same type of thing could happen anywhere. I really wasn't that alarmed at the video. It seemed like the proper response team arrived quickly after the fire was smoking enough to be picked up by the detection system.

All crewmembers are training in basic firefighting skills which include oil electrical and different types of fires. There is a separate fire response team. Which they are training in advanced firefighting skills but all crew members are trained in firefighting.

  17. This! I have seen folks trained in First Aid not doing the correct thing in an emergency. It happens. Some folks just are not equipped to deal with an emergency in a calm and appropriate manner. But, others who are better able to handle it were there and contained the fire.

It does happen. But, I have to agree with the others. Why are you trying to stir a pot with a clip that is 3 years old??? Slow morning?

You are 100% correct not everyone can deal with situations accordingly but in this situation the crewmember splashed water on an electrical fire which could have caused the fire to spread more than it did it. They were lucky that the that two other crewmembers were there to put out the fire. I'm not stirring the pot I am bringing up the point that training is lacking in fire safety. All crewmembers are responsible for the safety of passengers while at sea. One crewmember who does not act correctly. Can cause a horrific accident. Case in point costa concordia one crewmember messed up granted it was the captain but still one crewmember can make a world of difference

  18. Wow! The video could be viewed a lot of ways. But I believe it was Handled with the utmost care. Maintain scene safety, extinguish fire.

What you did not see was The crew evacuated guest from the area after the water intrusion. Area was empty and Salt water shorted the tv. A passing crew member saw the fire and yelled to other crew. Being trained properly he assumed the lead onscene command for a incipient fire while others grabbed the extinguisher. So he tried to collect water and dislodge tv from wall but fire was to big. Fire team then showed up and put fire out.

I believe that is how I was trained in marine firefighting. I work for an US oil company and in the Marine world safety is the utmost important concern.

So you believe splashing water on an electrical fire is the right thing? Yes the areas clearly abandoned I'm not talking about that I'm talking about the way they handle the initial situation. The first responder in this situation code have made the situation much much worse. Yes there were others people involved in this but the initial reaction is what I'm talking about training all crew members are responsible for guest safety.

  19. Not true if you stay in the tourist areas and don't venture out where you don't belong. It's no more dangerous than any other busy city.

Like anywhere else, don't flash your cash and jewelry, don't get stupid drunk and be aware of your surroundings. There's plenty of police in the tourist/dock area.. both in uniform and undercover.

Take a look at the link this is one paper that talks about crime. The same paper also talks about crime in tourist areas.
