As Poconolady will be staying at the Bayshore the closest London Drug is located at 1187 Robson which would be at about Robson and Bute.
There's also a Shopper's Drug Mart at Pender and Bute. Bit more expensive than London Drugs, but it saves the hillclimb up to Robson.

" I did see where the canada line is supposed to be up and running around labour day...is this looking like a pretty actual time frame?"
Yes - it will be no later than Labour Day Sept 7, 2009 - it is already three months AHEAD of schedule and they are test running the trains - in fact if some of the downtown stations were finished they could probably start the service now.
There's speculation that it could be in service as soon as the BC Day long weekend (first Monday in August). I guess if they wanted a stress test the final night of the Celebration of Light fireworks that Saturday would serve the purpose.

3 instead of 4 downs, longer and wider field, more players on the field, backfield can move before ball is snapped, all in all a better game. Major League without mega hype. Then of course there is the Grand National drunk AKA the Grey Cup Game, which is the Championship game of the CFL. The end result on the field is irrelevant, the parties leading up to it can be magnificent!:D
Now if you can only explain the rouge to the American football fans in the audience I think that should cover it.

As someone else pointed out the football (as in US style football) team is away that weekend, so it sounds like a pretty quiet time.
Cue some CFL fanatic to point out the vast differences between Canadian and American football. :D

Death By Chocolate may be no more, but I can second the recommendation of Mink in this thread.

Blue Water Cafe in Yaletown is great, but might not fit the "mid-price" criterion. Just a few blocks down Helmcken from Wall Centre.

is my favorite, but I like have a nice steak. The only food I dislike is fish, strange, but I have never like it.
Gotham Steakhouse and Morton's are both quite close to the Fairmont, and both are superb.

I have yet another restaurant question!!
How does Granville Island Brewing stack up vs Dockside (on granville Is), Boathoude on English bay, or Steamworks!!
all opinions welcome
no-whiners
I like all of them, but if I had to choose one I'd go for the Boathouse, and try to get a table on the rooftop patio just before sunset.

That's correct, at Thurlow and Alberni....it's kind of one stop shopping.:)
Sounds like a typical day in my neighbourhood. :)
You asked about Whole Foods. There's an Urban Fare on Alberni near the liquor store, at the base of the Shangri-La (tallest building in Vancouver, so it's hard to miss).
Any recommendations for Korean food?
I haven't tried it yet, but Red Chicken on Bute Street just south of Robson gets pretty good reviews. -
Second the recommendations for Joe Fortes and Caffe Artigiano. Thai House and Tropika are my favourite Asian restaurants on Robson (both just off Thurlow very near to Joe Fortes). Rain City Grill on Denman near English Bay is my favourite seafood restaurant but it's fairly expensive. Another good option down that way is The Boathouse. Watching the sun set over English Bay from their rooftop deck can be quite sublime.

Thanks for the helpful information on public transport. We travel in early May (not sure when Labor Day is but assume it's later in the year) so I think we'll use the limo service to the hotel and then buy day tickets for travelling around. G.
Labour Day here is the same as Labor Day in the States: first Monday in September.

Alamo/National has a rental office at the corner of Georgia and Bute, roughly three blocks from the Listel.
-
Another option very close to the Renaissance is Mill Marine Bistro, right on the seawall at the north end of Bute. Your usual pub grub with a great patio facing Stanley Park and the North Shore.

I've eaten there a few times and really enjoyed it. The salad bar is amazing and, yes, the meat just keeps on coming. I believe they have entertainment at dinner times, and it's a reasonable cost. It can be a little tricky to find as it's downstairs - you can enter off Alberni or Burrard I think!
Off by one block: Thurlow, not Burrard. Aside from that quibble, I can second your recommendation.

Just wanted to say hi. I recently joined this forum as I started doing research for my first-ever cruise later this year. I stumbled across this thread and figured I ought to subscribe and offer some help to those visiting my recently-adopted home for the first time. I moved to Vancouver after visiting here on business many times over the past several years. Eventually I realised that there's no place on earth I'd rather live and I convinced my boss to let me transfer.

Irashai on Pender in Coal Harbour fits your description.
