I predict there will be many future posters more than willing to offer parenting advice on the use of gaming consoles on a cruise.
Great post. It would be funny, if it wasn't so true.

Thanks to all of you. Our adult son is coming with us on his first cruise, and he loves billiards.
They don't have billiard balls, you'll have to make do with three pool balls.😢

Hobby is the best bet from California. We used the taxi service to get to Galveston. $95 plus tip each way for four of us and lots of luggage. Plenty of taxis both ways, no waiting and very convenient.

.... I want to keep my job so that I can pay for all of the incidentals incurred!
Did you have travel insurance?
-
I'm confused... did the dining staff serve your underage grandson wine?
As I stated, they OFFERED to serve him. Now that I've answered your question, how about answering mine?
-
On a Royal Caribbean cruise ship, the legal drinking age is 21.
If your son were to get caught drinking underage and he named you as the person who provided alcohol, then you would get in more trouble than he would, and I am not certain how much trouble that is. Now, if your son were to get caught drinking underage and he refused to name the person who provided, they would hold him in "cruise jail" (by guest relations) until his parent or guardian came to get him. They would then give both of you a little speech about underage drinking and warn you that if he were to get caught again, you would both be debarked at the next port of call (so obviously, it's better to get pcaught drinking at the end of the cruise, rather than the beginning.
Is this a personal experience or are you just guessing? Exactly how do you know this to be fact?
Speaking from personal experience with our grandson who was only 20 at the time. We found RCI to be very strict about enforcement. We were questioned several times by security about what our grandson was drinking. He drank coke, but they were looking to see if alcohol was added. Easy to check by looking at our bar receipts. They even questioned us on formal night when he was in his US Army dress uniform. However, in the dining room, all the wait staff, including the head waiter had no hesitation in offering him wine.

Our first RCI cruise was Nordic Prince in 1980 and it was the best cruise we have ever taken. We have also sailed Nordic Prince a second time, the beautiful "tiny" Sun Viking three times and the Song once. Would I sail them again? If the food, service and entertainment were the same, in a heart beat. If the food, service and entertainment were at today's level, I'd probably prefer a Vision class ship.

It actually shocked me how many people didn't give anything on our last cruise. Many were suite which annoyed me a little. If you can afford to cruise in a suite, you can afford to tip.
How did you know they didn't tip?

I don't think I'm "misinterpreting RCI's suggestions to suit my reasoning. Stating that "not on the recommended list means not recommended" seems pretty straightforward to me, not much interpretation there at all.
Now we've gone from suggested to recommended. Would that be officially recommended or just plain recommended?
-
this is what you said... RCI officially "suggests" that you don't.... That is quite different from misinterpreting RCI's suggestions to suit your reasoning. According to you, on formal night, RCI officially suggests that you don't wear military dress uniforms, or do you have another interpretation to share with us?They suggest what you DO or SHOULD wear, both for formal and casual evenings. I think it's reasonable to assume that what's NOT on the suggested list - is not suggested! :)Love these dress code threads.:)
-
1) Yes, as others have already posted, it's allowable to wear jeans on any night on any RCI ship or itinerary. RCI officially "suggests" that you don't, but in no way requires that you don't.
Where do they suggest that you don't? I'm familiar with what they suggest you wear, but never have I seen them suggest that you don't wear jeans.

Our first cruise was in 1977 on NCL, but I can't remember the cost. Our first cruise with RCI was in 1980 on Nordic Prince, a 14 day out of Miami. It cost $1717 pp for an outside cabin on deck 3. The price included air, LA to Miami, and an overnight in the Everglades Hotel close to the cruise dock. We consider it the best cruise we have ever taken.
-
Sorry, senior moment, missed out the word way. We also caught the taxi in town, not at the dock, maybe that's why it was a little more expensive.
The all inclusive is not just about the drinks. The food was excellent. The fish tacos were among the best that I have ever had, the shrimp cerviche was....wow. The nachos were great. Also with the limited number of people allowed on the beach, it was great value for $45. We were there for four hours, we ate slowly and drank slowly and had a very relaxing time sat under a huge palapa.

We were at Mr Sanchos last year, all inclusive. The price was $45 pp, taxi fare was $20 each for four of us. Food was excellent, drinks excellent and service was first class. Another advantage of the all inclusive was that the number of people is limited and the beach was not crowded. Would do it again in a heart beat. We spent about four hours there.

But in all honestly id say 95% of the people dry off with a towel before they get out of the pool
That's obviously the problem. The rule should be to dry off after you get out of the pool.

My experience taking wine on board is that you would have no problem. They appear to be looking for liquor and just give the bottles a cursory look.
You could also argue that cider is apple wine. :)

Sorry Linda, but Pimms from scratch just didn't sound right. All those folk that go to Wimbledon would be having a fit. I haven't had a Pimms in many years, when I lived in England I couldn't afford the posh drinks.:D. Had to make do with the bitter.
-
The Pimms stuff itself can be made from scratch, close enough anyway !
Just like homemade Kahlua.
-
Get it made from scratch.
Isn't Pimms always made from scratch? Pimms liquor, lemonade/SevenUp and a garnish?
-
Some day you will be one, and then you can stay at home.
If they're lucky.

But the Blue laws do affect people cruising from Tx
If you cant buy your 2 bottles of wine, to carry on for free, till after 12 on sundays
That can affect how long it takes to board.
I found the liquor laws very confusing, especially in a restaurant on Sunday morning, in the airport on Sunday and on the ship leaving port.
We checked our luggage in around 10:30 with no hassle. We then went for brunch at Fisherman's Wharf and then wandered around town. Bought our wine at Walgreens and returned to the ship around 2:30. Walked straight on.
-
Archaic.... just like the blue laws:rolleyes:
California doesn't do it;)
California doesn't do what? Don't get me started on Ca taxes and special charges by the State Board of Equalisation. I don't think Rick Perry is too smart, but I'd trade him in a heartbeat for Governor :D

I'm not a big fan of Galveston as a departure port, but I have to say that both embarkation and debarkation were among the easiest and fastest that we have experienced. Maybe we were lucky, but it was a very pleasant surprise. I also found all the port personnel to be very pleasant and helpful.

just a jacket is more than enough.
I doubt that you would ever see anyone wearing JUST a jacket. It would have to be very long and tightly buttoned down the front.
