Butterbean1000:  You hit the nail on the head with "surly" to describe our waitress.  The warm rolls were very good and when I asked her if we could have another roll, she looked at me like I had three heads and let out a loud, audible sigh.  She brought more rolls, plopped them on our plates without looking at us or saying a word.  She served the food without saying a word and never came back to check on us.  My entree consisted of a tiny filet, small lobster tail, a broiled small tomato (haven't seen this since my honeymoon in Miami in the 60's), and a side of whipped potatos served with wasabi, yuck.  The shrimp cocktail had an avocado oil drizzled on them, huh?

After dinner, we didn't see our waitress for quite a while and had to flag her down to ask for the check which she plopped on the table without a thank you.  I don't know what her problem was, she only had 4 tables to wait on with two people at each table and our group of 4.  Our waitress was not happy to be there and that very audible sigh when we asked for another roll was rude and uncalled for.

You are so right about the whipped potatoes and i like wasabi and i like potatoes, but it was not good at all

There’s no nice way to say it.  Both the service and the food in the main dining room are bad.  Actually that is being nice.  I wanted to wait until we had a few meals before commenting, but after two dinners and two breakfasts, it’s official.

We booked the late seating (8:15 pm) in the Scarlet dining room.  In an odd arrangement, the Scarlet doors (which remain closed until 8:15) are adjacent to the elevators.  As people waited outside the dining room doors, they actually blocked the elevator doors making it difficult for people to step off.   As more elevators arrived, more people pushed their way into line and it became very uncomfortable very quickly, especially when try to prevent an 85 year old from being pushed.

The waiter for our first dinner was either overwhelmed or under trained.  He disappeared for long stretches, to the point we had to ask other waiters to find him.  When he did show up it was with the wrong food.  We ordered a round of drinks when we first sat down.  We never received another.  Once he realized his error, he tried to make amends but we were halfway through dessert at that point and passed.  Clam chowder was ordered.  Chicken soup was delivered.  The basket of bread we asked to be refilled, never was.  The food was below cafeteria quality.  The wine list embarrassing.  Not sure how they accomplished it but they actually managed to make a baked potato taste bad.  It was unanimous at our table that the best thing we had that night was the butter.  If only we got that second basket of bread.

Brunch the next morning was equally bad. Coffee terrible.  Waffles have the texture and taste of a dish sponge.  If you ask for toast, make sure you specify with butter or you will end up with cold, dry toast.  We joked that the ham in the Eggs Benedict was Armadillo, how else would you explain the grayish brown meat?

Service improved slightly for our second dinner (formal night) and breakfast, but we’ve decided to eat our meals elsewhere from now on as the food did not.

Regarding dining room attire...The first night, as usual, was casual.  Closed toe shoes, nice shorts, polo shorts, sun dresses were the norm but tank tops and flip flops were present as well.  For formal night....Men, if you’re unsure of what to wear...I suggest long pants and a shirt.  Follow this simple tip and you’ll blend right in.  Nobody was dressed to the 9’s (or 8’s for that matter).  Ties were the exception.

Note...Since when is lobster not included on formal night?  $20 up charge.  Given the quality of the other food, we skipped it.

Sadly...There was nothing special or even formal about formal night.

Our service last week was pretty good, but i agree with the quality of the food every fish dish i had was very dry, but i kept ordering them there was nothing that actually tasted real good but this was my 10th Carnival cruise and 5th in 4 years so I knew what to expect the food has not been very good on any of the cruises but we still have a blast what i dont understand is that the food is not that good but i still overeat

About to go on 4 night cruise out of Galveston.  Do you know if the 4 nighters have a formal night and if so, how do people typically dress for it?

    Thanks,

    Rob

Last week we had anytime dining and we went around 6 every night and i was surprised that it was not crowded at all and there was lots of ball caps and T shirts. I think you can pretty much wear anything

    how smooth/not smooth was debarkation?

Not smooth we are used to debarking on 3 on this one they were debarking on 0 and on 2  they had the stairs blocked off on 1 so you could only get to 0 by elevator not very speedy

This might seem like a silly question, but how easy was the ship to navigate for elderly?  We were on a multi-generational cruise over Spring Break, and are hoping to do it, again, in Summer 2020, but my 80+ year old parents have already complained about the layout of the Glory.  And, honestly, I can't blame them.  I find the Fantasy Class easier to get around, but I sure would prefer to try a Dream Class ship.  I just don't want it to be TOO MUCH for the older folks. Glory has so many decks that you can't walk straight through, and you have to think hard about which elevator to use based on your destination.  They couldn't even offer to drop off or collect younger grandchildren from the kid's club, because they couldn't figure out how to get there from our cabins.

the Dream is not gonna be any easier to get around than the glory, maybe not harder but not easier

I'll start, I think the Bingo is an absolute travesty. They rake in about 10x as much as they pay out.

Dishonorable mentions, the spa is really expensive but they do a good really good job so it's tough to completely fault it. On the other hand the steakhouse is very reasonably priced (for steakhouses) but I don't think it tastes very good.

I agree with the steakhouse comment we ate there for the first time last week nothing special not worth the upcharge

Quick question about Cheers and Galveston.

I know you can't purchase alcohol on the first day due to TABC laws, but does the rest of the program work on Day 1 (i.e. sodas and other non-alcoholic beverages)?  I'm inclined to think "no" because you're only paying for 6 days.  Thanks!

Your correct will not start till 2nd day at 6 am
