He is out of the Islands at the moment (He spends the Falklands winter in the northern hemisphere), so I can't phone hime upo asnd ask for you sorry, will do some research and see if there is another way to contact him

Sorry missed the question about the Pub.
Have to be careful as I like all pubs :-)
If you are looking for a non smoking pub then Millers is the place (the narrows is also an option but that is 20min walk from the Jetty)
The Globe I would recomend for keeping an eye on the tender queue before returning to your ship.
The Vic is probably the one I would choose first just far enough away not to get too busy with tourist but not a long walk away.
Hope that helps

KoshLong, yes there are still minibuses going to gypsy cove to see the magalenic penguins.
If you manage to get on one of the first trips for the shorter excursions (bluff cove, sparrow cove, rockhoppers) you should get some time in the town as well.
England Swings, Patrick is good, just read the comments about him on the forum, especially this thread.

The weststore is the name of the store only a few minutes from the Jetty.
Glad you've made your choice I'm syure you will enjoy it as I've said on many occassions the rockhoppers are my favourite penguin, though I tend to go elsewhere in the Islands to see them.
And Jim enjoy the Pubs :-)

The rockhoppers are on the murrel farm which is close by to Stanley.
Often with the tours the cruise ships will only release some of the available spaces for the website and hold back others until the ship sails, different companies will have different policies on this.
-
It doesn't really matter what day you come in there will be shops open, unless you want to get some timber to build a house.
Stanley is well geared towards the tourist industry, in fact there might be more guides/drivers around because of the weekend, the tourist industry is not big enough to employ many people full time so a lot of guides and tourist have other jobs/businesses.

We will be on HAL ms Veendam 12 december 2010 at Port Stanley (8.00 til 16.00) This is a sunday. Does this give problems to visit the place? Note we are not looking for museum or battle fields but simply an impression of Stanley as town.(Closed shops etc??) Outside a look at Stanley itself we would like to see of course pinguins and other wildlife if any. Wud Sparrow cove be a possibility?
We prefer visit on our own or use public or localbuses or taxi.
The cruise excursions are always outside fair rates!
What would you suggest?:)
Your best bet if you are not going on a cruise ship tour is Gypsy cove (make sure you spend a little time and wonder off the track a little you'll get to find some quiet spots and look at the wildlife) you can get taxis and busses from the jetty centre (where you get off the tender). I would then when you return just take a walk down the front road down the harbour pop into the cathedral look pass victory green look at the 82 monument pass the 8th december monument and onto the museum and then take the free shuttle back to the jetty centre and finish off in one of the pubs for some fish and chips and a drink after all you deserved it after that :-)

For thoose that were asking I believe you can now book Bluff cove via the HAL website.
-
Maybe you can help me! We would like to do the Bluff Cove excursion when we are there in December but at this time you can NOT book it through HAL. I called and they said it should be available at the end of the month. If they don't offer the excursion who can I book it with locally? The web site you provided said to book it through the cruise line. What if they don't offer it?
Thanks!
HAL are apparently going to offer this but if for some reason this dosen't the owners of Bluff cove will find a way to do it, just go to their website and drop them an email and they'll advise you of what is going on.

Start now, never too early the guides get booked up a long time in advance especially for teh biigger ships.

It appears that the argentines don't want to ruin their cruise ship industry in the southern regions and therefore it appears that no ship has had any issues.
Sorry I was on holiday, got to take a break now and then, we were on Bleaker island and had some wonderful weather, almost the best all season. Got to see rockhoppers my favourite penguin and had a nice relaxing time.
Your bus driver was Ruddy, I'm the young boy in the team, and your rover driver was Kieth. Most pubs allow smoking but millers along John street is smoke free.
Glad you seemed to enjoy it we've only got two more ships this season, hopefully next season will bring better weather been a bit wet this year :-)
-
You are on the Last cruise ship of the season and therefore some of the penguins are likely to have left (rockhoppers and Magalenics). However the good news in the Falklands is that Gentoo penguins and King penguins stay in and arounmd the Falkalnds all year. However thoose tours can only be done via the ship. I also hear the very popular Voultenteer trip might not happen as the track is being closed at the end of march due to all the bad weather we've been having lately.
You might want to look on http://www.falklandislands.com for some local tour guide who might be able to take you round some of the battle fields etc.
Hope that helps

Choose a number between 8 and 20 Celecuis, Long term forecasts don't work here I'm afraid. Today is going to be 12C if that helps.
-
Many shops in Stanley will also take dollars however teh exchange rate can vary
-
Haven't had chance to look at the movie but if he was on my bus he would have had me both ways before and after the 4x4s however if he was the last trip the 45x4 would have taken him to town.

Here is a link to a excel spreadsheet of visiting cruise ships this will change as ships change their minds.
http://sulivanshipping.com/uploads/images/pdfs/Itinerary2009-2010.xls

There is a small expedition ship in that day, from 6am till 12 noon on the 15th feb
-
March you will still see some penguins, you can all year round (Gentoos and Kings) There should also be some rockhoppers and magelenics around, though they will be thinking about leaving around that time
Number of ships that miss the Falklands change from year to year The expedition ships have more success they are smaller and can change their itinerary at short notice to cope with the weather conditions, Last year I think only one big cruise ship didn't make it but this year we've had one ship (star princess) not make it at all due to weather, One ship due to illness on the ship not making it and another one which only got some of it's passengers off due to the weather.

I'm not sure to be honest for the volunteer point tours I'll ask around but people don't speak about it much, you're better off getting the info from fellow travellers on here.

The main beach to Stanley is closed during the day at the moment due to mine clearance happening in the area. However If you can get a taxi to drop you off at the end of Stanley airport there are a number of small bays up towards the light house, cape pembroke.
However if you get to Bluff cove, which is likely as many ships hold spaces until the cruise sets off, there is a massive beach at the lagoon.
No taxis to sparrow cove as thats a tour with the ship but you can get one to Gypsy cove which is also near Stanley airport.
Hope that helps

It did, apparently bad weather on route and the predicted weather for stanley, they cancelled at least 24 hours before they were due in.
The weather in stanley was bad on the day so it was a good call, though meant we were with
We've had quite alot of rain over the last couple of weeks which has caused the tracks to become "interesting" but fun.
-
I've got to be careful, there are only so many pubs in stanley and I don't want to banned from them. :D - Forgot Deanos, also Stanley Arms, Narrows and The rose which are a bit further away. I think that covers them all
Which ever pub you go in just tell them that jason sent you ;)
-
ANy of the pubs are great the most popular beeing the Globe, but the Vic just up the hill is a little less busy or Millers which again isn't far from the jetty.

The Buses for Bluff cove are only part of the journey, the total tour is approximately 3 hours.
The basics are
You are picked up at the Jetty taken out to meet some rovers who will take you overland to the Lagoon where you stay for about 1 hour and then do it in reverse.
Due to the popularity of the tour, plus not wanting people to miss tenders it is impossible to stay longer by skipping a return, sorry.
more info on the actual tour is here http://falklandpenguins.com/tour.asp

Hi,
Hope you will have a good time when you get here.
All those providers are reputable providers and go to the same place via the same route.
