  1. Hi, we've never rented a car in Hawaii before, but we're renting one on Maui this trip. Can anyone tell me which gas stations they have there? All the usual? Never really noticed before because never needed them. lol Thanks for any info.

  2. You can walk to the Kalapaki beach mentioned or jump on a free shuttle (the ones going to anchor mall or harbor mall). If you take the shuttle' date=' look for the little bridge (or see if you can see the sign for Dukes). We went to this beach on two of our three Hawaiian cruises.[/quote']

Hey Cruisin' Chick, do you know if there are places where you can change clothes at Kalapaki beach? We are planning on spending some time there when we cruise in October and trying to do some planning. Thanks for any help you can give me! :)

  3. I would love to do a helicopter tour.......have never been on one. But I do sometimes have a small problem with motion sickness, not bad but there. How bad would a helicopter ride be with that in mind? Thanks.

  4. Hi, does anyone know if the Carnival Ships sail past this area as well when the lava is flowing? We are cruising in October and that would be so awesome to see!! Thanks for any info you can give me.

  5. We are going with

    http://holoholomauitours.com

They are tailor making our tour - as one of our party is both travel sick and has trouble walking far - we are spending some time in Lahaina. They have been wonderful in helping make decisions and message me really quickly

We are going to West Maui

Thanks for the info, I will most definitely check it out. I have trouble walking far also. I saw some pictures of Lahaina and I would really love to spend some time there, but I'm worried about how far we will have to park the car from where we want to explore. It really sucks when you have trouble walking far!! :( Especially in Hawaii!!!

  6. We only go in Feb 2017 - but looking into it now as we do prefer the smaller tours. Found a perfect tour in Maui - good reviews and wonderful quick correspondence from them. When you are half way accross the world you want to make sure you get what you want!!

I'm an early planner too........to my husband and son's pain, I have been planning since a year ago in May. LOL My son kept going "Mom, it's over a year away, chill!" :) I agree with you about the smaller tours, they are so much better! If you don't mind me asking, who did you go with in Maui? Right now we are planning on renting a car in Maui but if we could find something better, we might change our mind.

  7. Thanks for all the help so far on this thread. We too are looking for smaller tours - there is of us and we are not keen on 'big bus' experience - usually too many people using their own 'time system' and stretching the '5 minute stop' to quarter of an hour or more and also many organised big bus tours have loads of 'shopping stops' which we are also not keen on.

We are still looking for Kuaui and Hilo - any suggestions - Thanks so much

    Helen

Hi Helen, not sure when you are going, but for Hilo, you might try Marylou's Tours. We haven't used her yet, but have reservations for October with her. She comes very highly recommended on this site and on Trip Advisor, and they only do six person tours or private tours........but they do fill up fast. Not sure on Kuaui as we are doing a short ship's tour and then some beach time on our own. Good luck with your plans!

  8. Yes. When you enter the date and # of tickets and click on "reserve" a page will appear with all the times for that date, and the number of tickets available for each time. Please let us know when you are successful!!!!!! Cherie p.s. I am getting tickets for our September visit and appreciate your post because it reminded me to check on availability.

LOL Glad I could help! Thank you so much for your help on this! I get a little anxious because I want this to be the perfect trip for my husband and son........their first time to Hawaii..........so I'm trying to get all the bases covered before hand. I've been lucky enough to get to Hawaii twice before so this is their trip and I get to tag along. :D And I'm trying to fit in everything they want to do on Oahu. LOL Anyway, hope you are successful with your tickets also!! Shella

  9. Oh, one more quick question for someone who has reserved Memorial tickets online.........when I went to the site to check it out, I saw where you enter your information but I just saw a place for date and number of tickets, and no place for time. Does that come up after you put in date and number? Thanks

  10. I think 11:30 is a good plan. If you get there early there may be tickets for an earlier time available. If not, you can see the other exhibits prior to your ticket time. Enjoy your day at PH. Cherie p.s. I don't know what day you will be there but the Aloha Stadium Swap Meet is close to PH. If you want a one stop shop for souvenirs you might consider this also. It is not open every day so you would need to check the dates.

Thanks for the help Cherie! Now, if I can just get the time I want! LOL

  11. You just never know if it is just a stop on the cruise.

    Where are you arriving from.

    Keith

Sorry, I should have given more info. We are cruising from Long Beach and Honolulu is one of our stops. We will be doing Pearl Harbor on our own and I'm trying to figure out what time to reserve our tickets for the Memorial. We dock at 9am and what I was thinking was half hour to get off the ship, an hour to get to Pearl Harbor from the pier area which would put us there at 10:30, and because we have to be there an hour early, was thinking about reservations at 11:30 for the tickets. Does this sound like a reasonable time frame? Thanks

  12. Hi! As it's been awhile since I've been on a cruise, and I need to work out a timing issue, does allowing a half hour to get off the ship in Honolulu sound reasonable if you're scheduling a private tour or should I add more? Thanks

  13. No, don't go to the first site (nps.gov) because it just redirects you to the second site (recreation.gov) to reserve tickets. The rec.gov site is the official ticket outlet.

When people send you to the recreation.gov site you are skipping a not needed step to buy tickets. The nps.gov site is great for information, but if all you want is tickets go directly to the rec.gov site.

Thank you for the info Scottca075! With two different sites floating around if was a little confusing. lol

  14. Go to the first website you list. Then click on Frequently Asked Questions, and on that page you will see a choice "how do I make reservations?" Hopefully you will be successful. Cherie

Thanks for the help Cherie!! I hope I'm successful too! :)

  15. Hopefully you'll be able to get your reservation but dealing with government agencies isn't always easy. ;)

Hahaha......you got that right!!! But I can always count on you for good information on Hawaii!! Thanks for all the help! :)

  16. What phone number are you calling? The Arizona's website shows (808) 422-3399 which is a Hawaii area code but guess it could go to the NP located on the east coast which probably uses the toll free number on the website.

    https://www.nps.gov/valr/planyourvisit/index.htm

Ok, this is a link to a different site than the link I got from a post of the forum. The link they gave was for Recreation.gov and the number is

    Reservations and Information:

    1-877-444-6777

But even on this site it says call at 7am Hawaii time, but it gives the number for the east coast. lol So thank you for this other link. I'll give that a try and see if I can get some information. :D

  17. Hi All! Ok, I'm a little confused and need some clarification. We plan on doing the Memorial on our own when we cruise to Oahu in October. I know we can call 2 months in advance to get tickets, but everything I've read always said to call at 7am Hawaii time to reserve them. Well, I had a few questions and call to get some information using the number on the site. I thought I was calling the site in Hawaii but was told they weren't on site in Hawaii so they couldn't really answer some of my questions, and I should call at 10am their time, 7am California time, in August to see what tickets were available. This leads me to believe that they are on the east coast. Has this always been the case??........and why is everyone always saying to call at 7am Hawaii time?? Am I missing something?......is there another number I should be calling? Thanks for any info you can give me.

  18. Hi all, I am also looking into doing this on our own in October when we cruise with Carnival. But I'm not sure about the timing and could sure use some help! We will be docking at 9am........but not sure how long it will take to get off the ship, or how long it will take to get from the ship to Pearl Harbor so, not sure what time frame to get the tickets for. We would need to get it as early as we can because of another tour later in the day. If someone that knows the area could give me some idea of the time factor here I would be most grateful!! We have a luau pick up at 3:30 and my son and husband wanted to at least see Waikiki Beack in between the two. Thanks for any help you can give me!

  19. Personally, I kind of like the table clothes on the tables........and for no other reason than it just makes it nice. I mean, it doesn't make the food taste any better, or the service any better.......both of which are awesome, by the way.........it just makes it nicer for dinner. I know, that's silly......but that's the way I feel. BUT, it's not going to make or break my cruise either way........Hey, I'm on a cruise after all!!! WOOHOO!!
