  1. We leave on Friday for a week long cruise with 31 family members ranging in age from 14 a 84. We live in 3 different states and some only see each other every few years. There are some extended family coming along too (Uncle's wife's aunt and cousins).

We've planned a few things via a Facebook group that I set up for the cruise, like meeting in a certain spot for sail away and getting a group picture on the first night... We also have one full group dinner reservation for night #2 and a smaller subgroup for the last night at Cagneys.

We're all very different with different interests and different plans. Several people posted to the group with excursions they were booking and the invitation for anyone else interested to come along. No expectations or must do events.

I think discussing things in the Facebook group made the planning easier and also lets everyone know up front that not everyone will be together all the time.

I guess I'll find out for sure how we do in a few days!

  2. I had a similar situation for the Spirit. We had my husbands retirement dinner at Cagneys for 20.

I emailed NCL at: specialeventsdawn@ncl.com (except I used Spirit not Dawn) soon as we were 60 days out and they gave me the needed reservation.

It took 1 day and I got a response back from them. I also included all of my friends confirmation numbers and names.

    Hope you get them!

Just wanted to follow up and thank you for your response on this. I emailed the special events person and they were able to accommodate both of our requests for the dates and times we wanted!

  3. We used the app on the Escape back in February. I did have to close and reopen the app a couple times, but for the most part it worked fine. Definitely came in handy.

Remember to download the app onto your phones prior to leaving port (do it now if you like). Once at the port you can activate it and start using it, even from within the terminal if the signal is strong enough. You can then get the jump on some people and start booking reservations before you get on the ship (for the ones you can book in advance).

    Great, thanks!

  4. First time on Norwegian and first time on a cruise that will be in a port overnight. We'll be on the Dawn and will be in Bermuda from 1pm on Sunday until 5pm on Tuesday. Wondering if there are any restrictions on coming and going very early in the AM or returning to the ship in the wee hours. Not necessarily planning anything in particular but I do like to get out with my camera before sunrise so just thought I should check on any policies around leaving and boarding. Thanks!

  5. Most C.C. groups Meet @ Bimini Bar deck 14 Starboard side.

Thanks for the tip. We're not a CC group. It's a family group ages 14 - 84 (some first time cruisers). We want to stand at the rail and wave goodbye to the city and to the passing boats. I googled Bimini Bar and looking at the pics it seems to be closed in with glass walls for wind breaks. Not exactly what we're looking for I think although I'll be sure to stop up there for a drink before the ship gets underway.

Is there anywhere on the ship's public ares where you can stand at the rail without the glass panels there?

  6. I've seen some reviews that the app was not reliable for keeping in touch with others on board. Have you had any issues? I want to let the teenagers have freedom on the ship but we need some type of easy communication and not interested in carrying walkie talkies like my cousin!

  7. For the 6s and 6s+ my DD and I have Lifeproof cases. She has used her in the pool to take underwater shots. She's also taken it to a water park to make videos of her and friends on the rides. I wouldn't let her use it in the ocean as if she drops it in deep water she'll be in deeper something else! I have used mine at the beach to take pics and videos of the kids without worries about sand or salt water ruining the phone. Usually you can find them on sale from Walmart or Best Buy for just under $50.

  8. Snorkeling, unfortunately the typical boat excursions available in Bermuda don't go out to the outer reefs. I have done a few of those excursions in Bermuda and they all took us to close to shore spots. It was no better than snorkeling off of the beach at Tobacco Bay. The boat trips with snorkeling were fun as boat trips....but the places they took us snorkeling somewhat disappointing. Not like many snorkeling boat excursions I have done in the Caribbean. The only way I know to do the outer reefs is charter a boat. Which I have not done.

Horseshoe Bay. They can run out of chairs and umbrellas in the afternoon.

Thanks - that is what I suspected re the snorkeling. I enjoy the catamaran sail so I'm ok with it as just a fun boat trip. My daughter wanted to go off from our group in search of more fish but if we'd just be going out further to see the same thing then I'd rather stay with the rest of our family.

  9. We'll be in Bermuda for a couple of days on the NCL Dawn next month. I have some questions if frequent visitors wouldn't mind providing their expertise.

Money - do I need to convert to Bermuda currency if I'm spending cash? Is it better to use a card with no foreign transaction fees instead?

Taxis, tour guides and restaurants - what's the expected tipping percentage?

Snorkeling - Is there a big difference in sea life when you snorkel at the reef vs near the beaches? We'll definitely be taking a snorkel excursion but trying to decide if it's worth it to go out to the reef (just me and DD14) or if we should just join the non snorkelers in our family and relax on one of the boats that anchors off of a beach?

Snorkel Park - ????? Waste of time?

Horseshoe Beach - Do chairs and umbrellas typically run out?

Crystal Caves - best time to visit?

New floating water park - anyone been?

  10. There are several sailing catamarans, Aristocrat, Rising Son and Restless Native to name some. Maybe more. Any would be fine. I would suggest googling them and reading reviews on TripAdvisor. Pick the one that has the most convenient time for you. As far as spots, they will pick them depending on sea conditions. Some of them can be booked out of the Island Tour Centre.

Thanks yes I've already looked on TA and there are a bunch to choose from. I read the reviews but was looking for a recommendation here as I'm a bit leery of the TA reviews, especially the ones that are carried over from other sites. I much prefer a recommendation from an someone in a discussion forum.
