  1. 1st time that I was in Anchorage (a big king crab port) went to the recommended crab store specifically to get king crab to ship home. It was all frozen and about $0.50 a pound more than what I can get at home - and then they added the shipping charges. In today's markets, really recommend you find a good fish store near you and find out pricing. Maybe buying form the fisher people at the pier will get you better pricing. Did ship my salmon home - it was a very expensive fish by the time all costs were factored in including the charter but we all savored every bite.

My brother lives in AK and occasionally sends smoked salmon for Christmas. Since his smoke house burned down, he now orders it from a shop in Seattle - go figure. So check pricing at home before you go.

I have been looking at the local prices, which really is just the one grocery store we have. While the prices may be about the same, I am really hoping for better quality from Seattle or AK

  2. Just had a meal of salmon tonight that my wife and son caught in Ketchikan last month. It was processed, frozen, and shipped home for us--at a cost--but the memory is what matters! :)

Absolutely! My husband was not a fisherman, he only went to humor me. To hear him tell the story, you would think we were in the North Sea in the middle of winter, instead of just a rainy summer day near Homer. We each caught our two halibut, sent them home, and enjoyed every bite!

  3. Most of the places that commercially fish have a place that can flash reeze your catch and send it home to you AFTER you are home....Seward, Homer does for sure.....dont send home pinks....they are not good eating....at home you can buy them in a can......If you are in Anchorage, you can go to City Market on 13th and K (I think) or 10th and M seafood and they will ship it home for you....even if you don';t catch it....:0

I have sent home halibut that we caught in Homer. It was a great thing to do. It reminded us of the day and the cruise, every time we ate it. Unfortunately, I won't be fishing on this trip.:(

    I love your screen name.:D

  4. To the OP and S7S - the name of the company we had seafood shipped from is Wild Salmon Seafood Market at the Fisherman's Terminal in Ballard. We had rented a car for the day, specifically to go to the Fisherman's Terminal and spent a lovely morning walking the pier, visiting the Fisherman's Memorial, talking to the crew of several fishing vessels, and had a delicious lunch on the pier overlooking the water. We then ordered the crab and halibut to be shipped home to arrive when we had returned from our trip. The fish and crab were delicious - brought back memories from our many trips to Alaska. I believe their website is wildsalmonseafood.com if you want to check them out from home rather than going there while in Seattle.

Also note that you can order crab and other seafood, like their yummy crab chowder, to be shipped to your home from Tracy's Crab Shack in Juneau. Google it, and click on their link for their seafood shipping service.

I absolutely love Tracy's Crab Shack! The friend I am traveling with is not fond of seafood at all, but she is going to have to bare with me when I get to Tracy's!

I think I will check online prices again so I know before I go. Thanks for all the suggestions!

  5. Thanks, EMED. I have also caught halibut in Homer and shipped it home. Yes, it was expensive, but, like you said better than grocery store prices, better quality, and it was my own fish! Too bad we are not going all the way to Seward. Maybe on another trip. :-)

  6. I have used Taku in Juneau several times. They are located right at the end of the pier aside of the Fisherman's memorial.

They are a local company and are open year round,

    Have a great cruise[emoji568]

Thanks! I will check them out.

I did post the question on the AK forum a few days ago but nobody has responded.

The price of fish has risen significantly. I pay a lot more for fish here on the East Coast in Boston than ever before. It is likely the same would be the case for West Coast.

I did just hear that lobster is still way down. A friend just returned from New England and said lobster was $4.99 a pound.

  7. thanks! You guys are fast. :-)

Looking on-line gives me plenty of advertising, but not many personal recommendations, so that is why I looked here. I have ordered on-line in the past, with mixed results.

Yes, I love visiting the Pike Street Market, and watching the flying fish. I was tempted to order from them in the past, but , the prices!

I have shipped halibut home from AK that we caught ourselves, but I am not fishing on this trip.:( They would not ship until the date you requested, so that you could be home to accept it.

  8. I will be on a 7 day AK cruise out of Seattle next week, and, as usual, I have seafood on the brain. I would like to have frozen seafood shipped to my home, and I was wondering where people suggest I do that from? I would like to have halibut, salmon, and crab sent home.

I suspect Seattle might be the best choice because the shipping would probably be cheapest, but I'd like to hear what people suggest.

  10. If she has a locator number you can probably go into her booking at go to the "need assistance" part. There have a bunch of scenarios including needing assistance. My DD has a friend that has MS and MD (one of the few in the world to have both) and she needs to be escorted and helped on to and off of the plane. When she flew alone my DD was given a pass to meet her at the gate and help her off. If all else fails just call the airline directly.

She is already listed as needs assistance, and is going to call them tomorrow. with my flight information and request that I be allowed to meet her at her gate.

You've all been great, and I feel much more confident now, Shows once again, Cruise Critic people are the best!

  11. My thanks to everyone for all the assistance and suggestions. Good to know I can go from gate to gate without passing through security. The rest seems so complicated, but we will get through it. Good to know about Ken's Storage. That may be the route I take, once I can secure a gate pass.

You've all been a great help!

  12. Thank you so much, Tom, for your knowledge and advice. Both of your suggestions seem like they would work. I guess I will have to alert her to the possibility that I will not be waiting at her gate, but that if I'm not there, someone will meet her and escort her to where I am waiting.

Thanks, also, for passing along the transportation options, I will read up on that next. Don't go away, I may have more questions. ;) We are staying at The Days Inn near the airport that first night, then staying at the Mayfair Hotel when we get back from the cruise so we can do a bit of sightseeing.

Again, thanks for your help. I'll be watching for you at the Pier.:)

  13. What is the date of your arrival, the date of your cruise, the airline, and which cruise line are you going to be on. (Trying to do some planning for your travel to your pier.)

    Tom

We will both arrive the afternoon of Aug 28 and our cruise starts the following day, on HAL. She is flying on Alaskan and I will be on United.

  14. Thanks for your quick responses. You confirmed what I was thinking, that I would be leaving the secured area to get my luggage. I will try contacting the airline about holding my luggage until I can collect it.

My friend is traveling from a relatively small airport that she is familiar with, and will have assistance from the agents there getting to her gate.

This is her first cruise and she has enough pre-cruise jitters keeping her occupied, I'm hoping to not add to them just yet.

  15. I will be flying in to Seattle about two hours ahead of a friend who is arriving from a different location. I must meet her at her gate when she gets off her plane. She has very limited eyesight and this is a big issue for her. So my question is, if I go to pick up my luggage, will I be able to go back to the terminal to meet her incoming flight? Without passing through security/TSA screening again? If I don't pick up my luggage right away, will I ever see it again?

Our cruise is less than two weeks away and this just occurred to me. Help?

  16. The last sitting for tea is normally 4:45 pm, however from May until September they do offer evening tea from 7 pm with the last sitting at 9 pm on Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings. So if your ship is on time, it is possible to take the shuttle into the downtown area (it stops on Government St. across the street from the Empress), dash down Government St and do a bit of shopping with a visit to Roger's and be back at the Empress at 9 pm and be back at the ship by 11:30 pm. If you are not in Victoria on one of those days, it is entirely possible that Princess has set up a "private" tea time with the Empress in the evening.

One more question for Putterdude, if you don't mind? When you say from May until September, does that include September? I will be there on Sept. 4th, which is a Friday, and I would love to take my friend there for tea. We are scheduled to dock at 6:00 so it sounds like there would be plenty of time to make it to the Empress for tea, see some sights and return to the ship on time.

Thanks for sharing your knowledge with the rest of us.

  17. What I saw in Antigua last Winter was Yes, there were some 'Taxis' avail. close by that Jade Drop-off point that took cruise people elsewhere. We walked, but some couples 'negotiated' a few hours for about $30/Dollars if I recall correctly. Locomotiveman

Thanks so much! I was able to walk to the square and really enjoyed it but David turned back and passed the time at the Jade Museum by buying a jade burial mask! I sure don't want that to happen again! I thought he was kidding when he showed it to me.

  18. We have been to Antigua and we are looking forward to going again in March. We are now leaning toward the ship's Antigua on Your Own excursion.

What I am wondering about is if the private guides at the Jade Museum would have a vehicle to do a private tour in? My husband is not able to do the walking required to see very much. On our first visit he only walked a block or two from the Jade Museum and could not walk all the way to the central square.

  19. DH and I are cruising on the Statendam next March on the 30 day R/T to Lima from San Diego. We want to see the Nazca Lines and have been working with a private company but HAL also offers the tour.

What I am wondering is if any of you have done this tour with HAL? I see HAL needs a minimum number and will cancel if there are not enough people booked.

So if you did this with HAL, were there many on the excursion? Has anyone had this canceled because of not enough people interested?

At least with the independent tour we know it will not be canceled on us for insufficient interest.

  20. You could look at the HAL Statendam 30 day r/t from San Diego to Lima and back. This is in Mid-March, 2014. I know you prefer Princess, but you might look at this anyway.

There is an almost daily live thread happening for this cruise right now on the HAL pages.

  21. Does anyone know which ship Nyron is working on now? On our last cruise he was the Excursion Desk Manager, that was on the Maasdam last April. We met him before that on the 14 day Alaska cruise on the Amsterdam.

We fished with him on the Alaska cruise, for halibut in Homer. We had plans to fish with him again in HMC last spring, but at the last minute, he couldn't make it. He is one of the friendliest and funniest people we have met and with two cruises coming up, we are hoping to see him again.
