  1. >>>>>Never saw anything quite like these double unit restrooms. <<<

I have been following and enjoying your travels for some time. While in Australia this past Dec/Jan my 7y/o Granddaughter and I discovered these amazing "toilets" (Australian term) in Byron Bay. She just loved pushing the buttons in the very clean restroom. You forgot one or maybe it's in Australia only....a button which dispenses the toilet tissue sheet by sheet...amazing technology

  2. What a delight. I am travelling vicariously with you and another poster on CC from the same World Cruise.

It it so interesting to read each days post, from each, as they are so different and almost the opposite.

You enjoy each days activities from various areas of the ship, others enjoy the same from the comfort of their cabin and the TV. You find the cruise line generous in their decorations and give-aways other cruisers find too many cutbacks.

You explore and taste the foods of the world. Another poster thrives on their favourite (same) food and drink in each port.

The fauna and flora is enjoyed by all. It's such a fascinating contrast by two posters from the same WC. I am enjoying both.:)

  3. I don't hate Schitino. I despise him as I despised the criminals I sent away for long tax payer supported vacations. Like Schitino, many of them were sociopaths who felt no compassion for other human beings and believed the world existed for their personal benefit and enjoyment.

I check this board ever so often and you Mr Uniall still speak of a person "Schitino". Is this the same Captain Schittino who is up on a manslaughter charge or another person? When on Jury Duty last year it was very important to have the correct spelling of my name.

I suppose my comment doesn't add anything to the discussion and will get deleted.

  4. Having read bits and pieces from the NORO-threads has made me even more aware of whats out there...on land. It has been a good education. I've always washed my hands with vigour when going to a restaurant or using the facilities.

Today I was sceptical of the buggy that I was pushing at the grocery store, pulling open the heavy glass doors when entering the Mall and so on. I will continue to wash, wash wash my hands and not touch nose or mouth if I don't have a tissue. I've been lucky on my last 3 cruises out of Sydney, Australia.

It's really sad that a much anticipated holiday, for so many, involved the Norovirus. Here is hoping that the next one will be filled with sunshine.

  5. Very interesting read. Love all the experiences of poster.

How can one talk back to someones experiences on a particular ship? or elsewhere.

I must agree about the kids club though. I was on a Carnival ship out of Sydney, Australia. I was not impressed at all at how the kids club was run on the Carnival Spirit. Never mind the phone(they gave us a new battery and only needed 2 batteries for a 10 day cruise)..what bother us the most was the time it took to just get the young one into Camp Carnival the first morning...one and a half hours and we had preregistered her the previous day..it did improve thou'. The kicker was the lack of kids club the last 2 sea days. Only 1 and 1/2 hours on those days. We had spent four complete days with the children and loved it (the kids club was open during those days). We wanted to have some adult time during the last 2 days...but..not to be had. End of rant. I'm sorry.

I had meant to reply to Aprilivy who wanted to talk back to Mitsugirly's researched experiences.

  6. In preparation for my cruise out of Australia, next year on the Carnival Spirit, I've been reading a few cruise reports here and there. I must say I've been darn unlucky. Each one that I have started was not completed, ever. So this time I started one by the pastor. What a lovely review... but again not completed. Seems like that is the norm, or I just chose the wrong ones to read. Hope he comes back.

  7. You are taking my quote out of the written context with your edit and para phrasing.

    I said:

"The primary reason we keep going back to the primary guilt of Captain Coward is to rebut those who continue to deny his guilt and use any and all reports of other causative factors as proof of his innocence.

Some of us will not allow revisionists to rewrite the true history of a ship's Captain who put his amorous desires before safe navigation and his own safety before the lives of the passengers."

Perhaps it would have been more accurate for me to have inserted an additional phrase:

Some of us will not allow revisionists to rewrite,
    unchallenged
    ,
    the
    true history
of a ship's Captain who put his amorous desires before safe navigation and his own safety before the lives of the passengers
    ."

I just don't get it Uniall. I don't remember reading that the charges against Captain Schettino (he's still a captain today) that he "put his amorous desires before safe navigation". I am supposing that the above is your opinion as a learned man. You express your opinion with name calling and sarcasm.

Many have opinions and not all coincide with yours. The Captain, most certainly, is responsible for that which transpired on the night of January 13... the loss of 32 souls.

  8. I don't mean to sound unsympathetic so please don't take it that way. I guess I am fortunate that I have never been a position to ever have to cruise solo.

My question is, do those that cruise solo do that as a choice? Do they prefer to be alone? If that is the case I think that it would be a premium you would need to pay for.

Even if I didn't have my husband, I can always find someone to share my room, a sister or a friend.

Please explain to me why some would choose to sail solo, and why they should get breaks when they are in a cabin that could accomodate more people.

Once again, please do not take this as a flame, it is not intended to be. I just need a better understanding as to why this is such an issue.

    Hi Misstopgun,

I am a widow and don't "prefer to be alone". All my friends are fortunate enough to have a spouse or partner. Some are not interested in travelling, others suffer from sea sickness and prefer land holidays.

This should answer part of your question. I do cruise with son and family out of Australia. My 7 year old granddaughter shares my cabin, but I have to pay the adult fare for her. I'm still paying 200%. Those are the rules.

  9. This has nothing to do with the Concordia but a captain.

On the radio this morning I heard a snipet about an accident. In Toronto, a crane had fallen and torn down live Hydro wires unto a city bus filled with passengers. The driver was interviewed. Her words were "as soon as the accident occured my training kicked in, I checked that everyone was OK" etc.......She was the captain of her vehicle.

The words "my training kicked in" made me think of Captain Schettino, whos training did not kick in.

  10. As highlighted by Sidari...".the human element and the human's reaction/action under stress is key in many accidents...not just aircraft or ship but with anything that depends on a human being in command."

You don't know who you are until something happens.....then you REACT and will be a hero or a coward

  11. I've said it before and I'll say it again: A properly planned and executed sail-by is safe. It does not increase the risk harm to the safe conduct of the sailing.

For example, consider the following. The data is from a GPS log of a ship nearly 1000 feet long. The comments are mine.

7:49pm. An evening in early December and it is very dark. Whilst travelling at 10 knots, the water under our keel is 15 metres deep and currently we are drawing 8 metres. We are 300 metres away on our port side from running aground.

7:56pm. Speed, 10 knots. If we continue our present course, in 0.6 nautical miles we will be aground. To our portside, we are 200 metres away from shallow water. We start an 80-degree turn to starboard to avoid the seabed ahead of us.

8:05pm. Thre is less than 200 metres from shallow water on our port side, the Captain has increased speed to 12 knots.

8:18pm. The Captain has increased speed to 20 knots. The shallow water on our port side is now 500 yards away.

Now that sounds a lot scarier than a properly planned and executed sail-by, doesn't it? And yet it's considered safe passage. It's the route a ship takes coming out of Southampton, England.

I must admit that I know nothing about steering and driving a ship, but I don't understand why at 8:05 you speak of a distance of 200 meters and later at 8:18 it is 500 yards. I am just curious. Is it that I am misreading something?

  12. Quote from CostaSmurfette:

A coroner will at some point cast a judgement in the Italian court as to the reason or method of death

I am pretty sure they drowned. To my knowledge none of the victims were found in the swimming pool, hot tubs, bathtubs or showers. Kind of rules out accidental death to me.

How do you know that all drowned. Some could have sustained an injury in a fall that caused life to cease.

  13. Corcordia's water tight doors were Type "S" (for Schittino) :p

    Dear Mr. Uniall

How can you be taken seriously when at every turn you just ooze sarcasm.

I like many am waiting for the REAL truth. You are a professional man, yet have great difficulty in spelling a name.

  14. I wonder how much information will be available from the pre-trial hearing on Mar 3.

So many opinions, based on various media reports, have been posted. It will be interesting to see how the actual facts will compare to the opions on this forum.

I am not being sarcastic, just curious.
