Majesty318, I am on your same cruise and Celebrity offers a 5 1/2 hour tour: Description is below.  They also offer the Gatun Locks tour which is 8 hours.  We are planning on doing the one below because it is not as long.

    Highlights

    • Learn about the workings of one of the most incredible engineering marvels in the world: the Panama Canal.
    • Visit the Miraflores Locks of the Panama Canal, see a movie presentation & learn about the history behind it's contruction.
    • Step onto the Expansion Observatory Platform to see the process that will allow larger ships to travel the canal.

Thanks, I just realized yesterday that the one you pasted covers both locks. I hadn't read the description properly. I think we will do this one as well.

Are interested in visiting the locks themselves or locking through the locks on a partial transit?  If you would like just to visit the locks on a tour other than a ship's tour, there are a couple of names is see mentioned here occasionally...  Roberto Whitiker  robtads2@hotmail.com and My Friend Mario (Almiza Tours), http://www.myfriendmario.com/

I have not used either but they have received mostly positive comments on this board.

If you are wishing to lock through the locks and visit Gatun Lake by boat, the ship usually monopolizes these services while they are in port.  Your only choice in this case would be a ship's tour.

Thanks, looking to just visit the locks. I emailed Roberto a while ago but never heard back.

  3. Acquarius Tours! Honestly one of the best excursions I have ever done in over 20 cruises. It was a small group (15-ish) and we did the starfish beach, a snorkeling spot, and Stringray City. But we did Stingray City LAST so there was no one else there - it was amazing

  4. Thx for all info.

How long should we plan from leaving ship to meeting tour guide? Longer in 2nd day than first?

The first day we got off right when the gangway opened and had to wait in line. So I would say maybe half an hour. The second day you get off with your luggage tag group, so there was less waiting.

  5. When overnighting on the ship in Singapore, what's the process with customs and immigration? Are there security scans etc.?

And same question for disembarking...we'll be staying on a couple of nights in a downtown hotel before flying out.

You have to go through immigration and show your passport every time you get off. When we disembarked for good, they scanned the luggage, but otherwise no issues if you have nothing to declare.

  6. Does anyone know if there is luggage storage at Hong Kong cruise terminal KTCT?

We are planning to visit the chi chi nunnery at diamond hill so just thinking we could leave our luggage in storage, get the free shuttle to diamond hill and back, retreive our luggage then taxi to hotel from port.

Do MRT stations in Hong Kong have escalators or lifts? Are there any maxi taxis? We are a group of 10 and will have 8 pieces of luggage, some people just dont know how to pack light, so assume we will need 3 taxis due to the amount of luggage.

Not sure about the luggage storage, but there were escalators in all the MRT stations we passed through

  7. Thx, frustrating. What would happen if you arrived at ship the evening of day 1?

Are you posting a review? Got loads of questions...

I don't know about late arrival day 1, since we got there during the window, but my guess would be it would not be a big deal. The gangway was open 24 hours. But just my guess!

I wasn't planning on doing a review, but if you give me your email, I will reply so you can ask your questions. I would be happy to answer! Just don't like posting my email publicly since it's my full name.

  8. No late night dancing, say it isn't so? Please tell me there's music somewhere at night!

The only "club" type of place after midnight, at least on our sailing, was Music Hall. The crowd was mostly very young or older - not many 20/30 somethings (my age). My friend and I didn't love the music.

We did enjoy Boleros but it was not open as late.

  9. Majesty, thx for posting. What time did you need to check in on Day 1, what time did you need to return on Day 2?

Want to go to Lantau. Trying to figure out if better to go from hotel in TST or ship in KT. Had read that need to return by 5 even though departure not until 8.

    Anyone know or have suggestions?

Check in was between 12-4. Day 2, yes, we had to be back at 5 pm, super early considering sailing was not till 8.

  10. For those who have already done this can you please offer some advice.(I have also posted on the RCI board)

We will be arriving at Laem Chabang on Mariner OS in January with an overnight stop. We would like to go to Bangkok to stay in a hotel overnight and then return to the ship the next day. RCI has a shore excursion that includes overnight in BKK but this is very expensive and also includes touring which we do not want, having visited the city before. My questions are:

    1. I assume that we can do this and make our own arrangements - am I correct?

    2. Do I need to contact RCI and let them know before we sail and what information do they need?

    3. We will need our passports for the hotel check in. Can we collect them from Guest Services and return them the next day?

    4. Thailand has a visa on entry. Will the ship do this before we arrive or do we need to wait till after? (which means we can't collect the passports till after we dock)

With lots of thanks in advance.

Did it last month with Celebrity

    1. Yes, you can make your own transportation arrangements

    2. No, you don't have to tell them ahead of time

    3. Celebrity had it set up so everyone staying over could collect their passports in the morning and return them the next day

    4. I don't think we needed visas for Thailand. The only one I got on the trip was Vietnam, which Celebrity did organize onboard.

  11. Oh and I forgot embarkation was a mess! Part of our group got there early and got on fast. I arrived about 11:45 - it was packed and they were not checking in based on loyalty (was emerald till this cruise and now diamond). I was pretty angry. Sat in row 8 of 8 waiting for the people with IPads to come along.

Disembarkation was easy. We did carry off our own luggage. We chose to leave about 8:15, and the ship seemed almost empty by then.

  12.

Question.. was there any discounting of the specialty restaurants (for everyone, not the first night discount for D+)? I'd heard from earlier cruises that Jamie's was available for $15 for lunch later in the cruise, and that Wonderland can be had for 20-30% off depending on when you ask.

The D+ members in our group got buy 1 / get 1 half off at specialty, good the first 2 nights only. We asked our head waiter about a discount to Wonderland and were offered 20% off but only if all 6 of us went. Jamie's was $20 lunch at the end, not sure if that was a discount.

  13. I was also on Anthem 12/12. I agree with a lot of the OP's comments. It's a very different experience from most RC cruises.

We always found something to eat but were not really impressed with the food overall. Agree that Silk was the worst. One person from our group ate at Wonderland and raved about it, but personally I never do pay restaurants. Windjammer was always busy, next to impossible to find a table, and they took ages to clear dirty tables. The arrangement was a bit confusing there, with multiple stations with the same thing, so you had to walk all over to make sure you saw everything. The sandwiches, salads, and soup at Cafe 270 were good although the lines were confusing there, too. We had breakfast and lunch at Devinly Decadence almost every day - very calm there with friendly and sufficient staff and good food. Oddly, though, they serve the same stuff every day.

My group hated Spectra's Cabaret (fell asleep at it post-late seating dinner). We also couldn't follow The Gift and left 10 minutes in. We enjoyed We Will a Rock You.

Spent loads of time in the gorgeous Solarium and never had an issue finding a chair. Also agree that the Esplanade doesn't compare to the Promenade. Promenade is wider and more inviting.

We did the I-Fly and it was awesome. Didn't get around to the North Star or Bionic Bar.

Quest in Seaplex, agreed, so weird with nowhere to sit.

The bar service was great, particularly Ulysses in Boleros.

Lack of late night dancing/ entertainment, for sure.

However... Like the OP, our group still had a lot of fun, made some friends, relaxed, and enjoyed the pretty and modern ship. I prefer Freedom & Oasis class, but cruising from Bayonne is so convenient for me (live 20 minutes from port). With Anthem there at least a few more years, I would go again.

  14. Back from the cruise. The rotation started over after night 4, so on a 7-night cruise, there will be 1 restaurant in which you don't eat twice.

We tried to change time and restaurant one night but it was unavailable. They said if we went back at about 9 pm (after 2nd seating started), they might be able to give us a table whose normal occupants didn't show up.

We were pretty underwhelmed with the food on Anthem.

  15. Leaving on Anthem on Saturday and excited despite the many negative reviews! I love Celebrity S-class so am definitely looking forward to "S-class on steroids."

We are booked on the Dynamic Dining Classic, which says that we will follow a pre-set rotation. But since there are only 4 restaurants and 7 nights of the cruise, after the 4 nights, does the rotation start over or do we just pick which ones we want to go back to?

  16. Very happy to hear that you were pleased with the hotel. Just a couple more months and we will be there! Did you have dinner at the hotel or go out?

    Jan

We ate from street vendors near Patpong Market. T was underwhelming. I wish we had stuck to our original plan of dinner at a restaurant called Nalin Kitchen (recommended on Trip Advisor and by our tour company).

  17. Is there any chance to leave the suitcases for one day in the cruise terminal in Singapur?

I think we need to leave the ship 6 a.m. and our flight doesnt leave till 11pm.

    thanks for the help

Not sure if you still need this info, but there was luggage storage at the cruise terminal.

  18. Just wanted to update this thread after our trip.

There were 2 free shuttle buses in the terminal sponsored by local malls, one went to Kwun Tong and one to Diamond Hill. I saw lots of green public buses in the terminal but didn't check their schedules or routes.

We took a taxi from TST to the terminal 3 times. The most expensive was HKD 100 when we had luggage; the other times it was 80 & 85.

  19. We will be doing the same as you, ship docking in Laem Chabang for two days in January. We also have booked at the Eastin Grand Sathorn, due to it's location, close to the BTS, as well as the write ups on tripadvisor. How did you find the hotel? Was it all you hoped for?

I found it on TripAdvisor. We were there last week and it was great. Perfect location next to the Skytrain. Nice large room. An incredible pool and pool bar. Lavish breakfast.

    I definitely recommend it.
