There are no white sand beaches. There are sand colored sandy beaches near Calibishie but to get there most of your day trip would be in transit.
If you must do a beach, then Mero is it, but it is black sand. There is another beach with some amenities near Portsmouth. That beach is also black sand and would also result in much of your day being spent in transit.
Most of the beaches on Dominica aren't black sand, they're rocky. You really should take a tour into the interior and enjoy the mostly unspoiled rain-forest between the volcanic peaks.

Those aren't made for walking on rocks. If you have them, just use a sacrificial pair of running shoes. Otherwise get a pair of hiking type sandals. You want a closed rigid toe, a rigid sole and a back strap.

DOMINICA MOST CAPTIVATING is the tour I am looking at. Their website recommends hiking boots...not practical to bring. Has anyone worn running shoes on the tour? were they sufficient?
Leave the hiking boots home. I hiked to the Boiling Lake and back in running shoes. They might get wet and dirty.
