  1. Thanks again, now counting down to our arrival in Copenhagen :)

We will pick up Copenhagen Card at T3 and take a taxi to Marriott upon arrival.

You told me before Marriott is about 10 min walk to the Central Station. When we depart, is it doable with 2 kids and 3 pieces of luggage? Can you give me some directions about how to take the train back to airport (Air Berlin)? Flight is at 2:00pm and I bet leaving Marriott at 11:30am would be safe?

    Wowmusic

We are also staying at the Marriott. I emailed the hotel and was told they offer the 24 hour Copenhagen Card for 249 DKK and a 72 hour for 479DKK. So, if you are taking a taxi to the hotel, like us, it pays to buy it at the hotel. I hope this helps.

  2. We are staying at the Marriott at the end of June. I was in contact with the hotel about taking a boat tour from the hotel, this is their response.....

"There is some construction taking place outside the Hotel by the canal, so the departure point is about 100 meters from the entrance. The boat departs at 9am and tickets can be purchased at the concierge desk. The company is called Stromma."

From my research there are two companies for the tours. Stromma is more expensive. The other company is Netto Badene which is less money but doesn't stop at the hotel.

  3. Summary about reaching the different parts of the city from the West Harbour using Helsinki Region Transport

First, check out where your ship will dock here (West Harbour list follows South Harbour list) :

    http://www.portofhelsinki.fi/passengers/expected_cruise_ships

This map is great for initial orientation:

    http://www.portofhelsinki.fi/passengers/international_cruise

As far as I know there are always shuttle bus service to the major cruise ships. The shuttle buses will stop at the city center ("main shopping area" on the map) 0.4 miles from the Market Square.

Taxis should also be available in the harbour. Prices are same for all taxis.

Some Ho-Ho buses seem to change their route to serve the cruise ships as well.

I'll concentrate here on advise for those who want to use local buses and trams.

    http://www.hsl.fi/EN/Pages/default.aspx

First a note about tram 3B/3T. The tram changes name twice during its route.

Unless you enter the tram at the Railway Station just ignore the letters.

(After the Railway Station tram 3B will turn left, tram 3T will turn right. That applies in both directions).

To make it even more confusing sometimes in August 2013 the trams will re-named so that tram 3T will become tram 2 and tram 3B will become tram 3.

West Harbour, quays LMA and LH7 (west/north side of the bay)

Approx 0.9 miles to the harbor exit, 1.8 miles to the city center, 2.1 miles to the Market Square.

Tram 9 starts from the West Terminal (Länsiterminaali) a bit further on

See Terminal location on this map:

    http://www.portofhelsinki.fi/download/14981_20130423_rahtiliikenteen_ajoreitti_porteille.pdf

    Tram route:

    http://linjakartta.reittiopas.fi/en/#?line=1009++1

Warning. As the 9 tram serves the Estonia ferries there might be lots of passengers.

Fifth stop for the 9 tram is "Kampintori". (bus station, subway station, shopping mall). Connections to buses or tram towards the Sibelius Manument or Olympic Stadium. See post #311 for details.

Two stops further on for tram 9 is "Rautatieasema", the Railway Station. Change to tram 3T (2) here from the same platform for Senate Square & Market Square (or take a 0.55 mile walk through the city center)

West Harbour (Hernesaari), quays LHB and LHC (east/south side of the bay)

LHB: Approx 0.5 miles to the harbor exit, 1.3 miles to the city center, 1.7 miles to the Market Square.

LHC: Approx 0.9 miles to the harbor exit, 1.7 miles to the city center, 2.1 miles to the Market Square.

Bus 14 stops just a short walk from the quays

    http://linjakartta.reittiopas.fi/en/#?line=1014++1

The first bus stop "Hernesaaren Laituri" is next to quay LHC.

The fourth stop "Hermesaarenkatu" is close to quay LHB.

The eight bus stop is "Tehtaanpuisto" next to the church with the high tower. To get to the Market Square get off and continue forward to the next block for tram 3B (right side of the street) This is the recommended place to do the change.

You can also change to tram 3B going to the Railway Station (left side of the street) but there will be further opportunities to do the change.

The 9th bus stop is "Viiskulma". Tram 3B is going to the Railway Station from the same platform. Tram 3B to the Market Square from opposite side of street 50 feet to the left if you missed to do the change at the earlier stop (the sign is hidden between two store awnings and a bit hard to notice).

The 10th bus stop is "Iso Roobertinkatu". Tram 3B is going to the Railway Station from the same platform. Again, tram 3B to the Market Square opposite side of the street.

The 11th bus stop is "Bulevardi". Go back to the last corner and turn left for tram 3B to the Market Square (last opportunity if you for some reason had missed the earlier three stops)

Go to platform opposite the street for tram 3B or tram 6 to the Railway Station.

If you want to walk to the Market Square through the city center along the Boulevard and the Esplanade Park (0.65 miles) this is recommended stop to get off.

The 13th stop is "Kamppi" (bus station, subway station, you can walk through the shopping mall to the city center)

The 14th stop is "Kauppakorkeakoulut". Get off here for visiting the rock church. The 15th stop at "Apollonkatu" is also an option.

The 17th stop is "Töölön sairaala", Olympic Stadium is 0.4 miles to your right.

The 18th stop is "Töölön kirjasto", Sibelius Monument is 0.15 miles to your left.

Note that a bus can skip stops if no one wants to exit/enter. Name of next stop is shown inside the bus.

Thanks for the wonderful summary! I will be printing this and taking it with us next month. I really appreciate all the advice I have received here.

    Thanks again!!!

  4. I don't think there is an ATM at Frihamnen port. But it has been a long time since I last had a look around there. Anyway, today the normal way to pay here in Sweden is a card, and I would be very surprised if you will need any local currency if you want to buy bus tickets in the kiosk on the quay. Some small places may not take cards.

If I have cash will I be able to pay for coupons for the day? I am afraid my non chip/pin Capital One card won't work and now I hear there is no ATM at the pier.

I want to have all bases covered.

Thanks again for helping us out.

  5. I asked this question when I called them and the man who answered confirmed that you can buy the coupons you need in the morning and then you present two coupons per person to the driver as you enter each bus.

Thanks for this information. We did plan on converting money before we arrived but...is there an ATM at Freeport terminal?

  6. Thank you both for responding.

We thought having the all day transportaion pass would make things easier for us. We do like to walk but if it were to rain walking won't be an optipon.

I guess I'll have to wait until May when other cruisers return from Stockholm and hopefully let us know if the kiosk is open at the pier.

Otherwise, there is a ticket machine that may or may not take my non chip Capital One credit card.

  7. 1. yes that is correct.

    2. Sure you could walk from Wasa to Gamla Stan but it is quite far.

Other options would be to go by bus or by using Djurgårdsfärjan.

    3. yes it does.

    4. Buses in Stockholm no longer accepts cash.

Either use some form of travel card or pre-paid tickets.

    5. No it's not available yet. The current timetable expires on June 20th.

So I'll guess that the new time tables will be out at the end of May or

something like that and it will be available at http://sl.se/en/Visitor/Plan-your-journey/

    6. Its not far from the berth F638 to the bus.

Apart from walking and going by bus, there is also a harbour commuter-boat line called sjövägen.

It goes from Frihamnen via a few stops (including Djurgården) to Nybroplan.

However not all departures stops at Djurgården.

Times for the summer are far from being available but

its a good option to have in mind especially if you can

    spare the time.

Thank you so much for the wonderful advice.

I’ll wait for the end of May to check the timetables.

I think we will get a 1 day travel card. Do they sell them at Frihamnen since the driver doesn't accept cash?

Correct me if I am wrong…

First, I need to purchase 4 SL Access cards for 20 SEK each. Then, they will add the correct amount on each card for 1 day of travel. 115 SEK for adults and 70 SEK reduced for the children.

I checked the route today on the SL website. It had me take 3 different buses to get from Firhamnen to Djurgården. Is that all the time or just in the off season?

Again, thank you so much for spending your time helping travelers from all over the world.

  8. We are arriving Frihamen on the Eurodam on Sat July 6th at 8am.

We are a family of four. We would like to visit Vasa first and then head over to Gamla Stan for the changing of the guards and wandering around.

From what I have read… we can take bus 76 to Djurgården and walk across the bridge to Vasa. After that we can walk to Gamla Stan and either take the 76 bus or a taxi back to the pier.

    Here are my questions…

Does bus 76 run on Saturdays in July? What is the cost? Can we pay the driver, we will have the local currency. Is there a timetable for July that I can use? How far is it from F638?

I think I read about a HOHO bus that stops at the port, anyone have any experience with that?

When paying for four people on the bus does it pay to take a taxi?

    I really appreciate any advice.

    Thanks in advance.
