  1. Cross-posting on both Carnival and RCCL in the hopes of receiving all the information I can:

A little background info: We are invited to go on a 3-day Bahamas cruise next July. I really, really, really do not like old ships nor do I like short cruises but we are going with a group. The group will consist of competitive dancers between the ages of 5-18 who will be performing a 30-minute show on one of the ships through the "Stars at Sea" program. The dates are set in stone in July and so is the fact that it will be one of these two ships. The group has asked for my input because they know I love to cruise and research so much......but my research is mostly Disney and the newer ships as well as 7+ day cruises. So I need help! I'm having a really hard time providing the group with information because both of these are old ships!

There will be approximately 50-80 dancers depending on who chooses to go and each dancer will be with their family.

So.....given the above information, which ship is better for this group? What are the pros and cons? How are they different? I know NOTHING about either of these ships and the last time I went on an old ship it was awful! That ship has been since retired so I would hope never to repeat that experience. TIA!

Even though it has been years since i was on either ship, but if those were my only 2 choices I'd choose the Enchantment myself. Sensation almost put me off cruising. Didnt cruise for 3 years afterwards and that cruise was on the Enchantment which revitalized my passion.

But since these are 5-18 year olds I think you have to choose Sensation. Carnivals Fantasy class updates added the waterpark. The arcades on the carnival ships have always been better.

Take the Sensation and introduce a new generation to the joys of cruising. Even if you might not enjoy as much.

  2. You know, there are actually some people who do not do the computer. What are those folks to do?

Sent from my iPhone 5 using Cruise Critic App

My employer has discounts for those who are using smart phones that are not available any other way. Many companies are moving in the direction of embracing technology and those who are failing to adapt will not recieve benefits they could otherwise get.

The switch to smartphone was made due to abuses. They retained more control over the issuance of those discounts and prevents line staff from bypassing those controls.

I get that question a lot, the answer is they lose out.

Please no flames..... just saying what is happening.

  3. Considering the switch from Royal to Carnival and I would like to know which Carnival ship is comparable to Royal's Freedom of the Seas?

    1 word answer: None.

With that being said check out any of the Carnival cruises with a Live Concert on board. Just make sure you enjoy who is playing.

Make sure that you are on a Triumph, Dream, or Conquest class ship.

Try to get a ship with the 2.0 upgrades. (Cant wait for mine)

Get to the punchliner comedy show early!

Don't fret over what the Carnival ships don't have. Make sure to enjoy what they do have.

I cant wait to try Guy's Burgers without the $4.95 cover at Johnny Rockets.:)

I love midnight room service w/o the $3.95 charge.:)

I like having the self service laundry to dry out bathing gear before packing to go home.

I love the 24 hour Pizzeria.:)

    I like the Deli.:)

    Things I Miss on RC:

    No Ben and Jerry`s

    No Ice Skating

No Flowrider love watching people wipeout. Even have the video of my wipeout.

No good theater show [based on last cruise]

I like both lines. It comes down to the right ship on the right dates at the right price to the right destinations.

  4. Feel free to share your own opinions on these topics. I recently went on my first Royal Caribbean cruise.

Ships: I have to say, I love the whale tail. However, Royals ships are more sleek and less boxy. The insides are much nicer on Royal, excluding the interiors of Sunshine and Breeze. Carnival 0 Royal 1

Rooms: The rooms on Royals Vision class are much better than the Fantasy class, which were built around the same time. However in Carnival's newer ships the rooms are roomier but the decor in the Royals rooms is nicer. A tie.

    Carnival 1 Royal 2

MDR: The food on Carnival is a 10. On Royal a 7. Carnival food blew me away, Royals was food but not great.

    Carnival 2 Royal 2

Buffet: ROYAL ROYAL ROYAL. The food was better. The desserts were much better as well.

    Carnival 2 Royal 3

Specialty dining: We didn't do it on either but they have similar variety.

    Carnival 3 Royal 4

Pools: This is a tough one. Royals pools are much bigger and better designed but Carnival has those great slides. Hopefully Oasis 3 and 4 will have slides like Carnival.

    Carnival 4 Royal 5

Activities: Royal wins here. We had tons of fun doing trivia. There seems to be more enrichment activities on Royal, which we loved.

    Carnival 4 Royal 6

    Service: Both have great service.

    Carnival 5 Royal 7

Nightlife: Carnival had the better disco (Royal has the Viking Crown Lounge  ) but Royal had fun parties, such as the silent party (headphones with different music) the 70s Disco Inferno Night in the atrium and the white party. Tie.

    Carnival 6 Royal 8

Entertainment: Royal blew Carnival out of the water. The comedians were good on Carnival but they were hilarious on Royal. I really enjoyed the impressionist on my cruise. Also, our CD on Royal was hilarious. For those of you who lurk on the Royal boards, it was Marc!!! I loved him, he was very funny. The production shows were OK on both, more Broadway on Royal and Vegas on Carnival. I also enjoyed the tons of live music on Royal. All night they had different bands in the atrium. There was a great pianist at the bars. They had a steel drum ONLY band!!!

    Carnival 6 Royal 9

So what do you guys think? Respond to each of these categories.

I generally agree with your points.

But a comparison between a fantasy and a vision class ship, there isnt one. But Enchantment was stretched to increase tonnage to over 80,000 so it is unique amongst the vision class.

With that said, try a comparison between a Conquest and a Voyager class. They are similarity sized even if the Voyager ships are older than Conquest.

Please choose a RC ship with flowrider before suggesting that RC needs slides. Navigator or Freedom of the Seas would be good choices.:D

  5. For the past few months, the Enchantment has removed the D or D+ and up priority line from Customer Services. Now there is one line for everyone. No official word but possibly due to a customer complaint.

I was wondering if this is being done fleet wide or limited to the EOS.

Probably since enchantment is doing the 3 and 4 day short cruises. D and D+ members aren't sailing on her much.

    Just a guess.

  6. I`ve enjoied cruises on both lines.

Carnivals ships arent laid out as well as RC ships because they are 30 feet narrower than the RC ships with the promanade, and one of the dining rooms is in the middle of the ship with no way around except to go up or down.

Carnivals inside cabins (Except 1A) are 185sq ft vs 150ish for RC. With that much space devoted to cabins, the public areas tend to feel more crowded.

Carnival`s large ships are all smaller than RC`s voyager class, freedom, and oasis class. Carnival`s newest ships are around the size of the voyager class that first sailed in the late 90`s.

On either line I want the newer large (over 100,000 tons) ships. They have the larger selection of foods/activities on board.

No fantasy class, spirit class on CCL. No vision or sovereign class for RC.

Carnivals fares are more reasonable right now. But on last cruise i couldnt watch the stage shows (that bad). Comedy shows were good. Carnivals food has been better(in general) Excursions are mostly the same. Pool side actitivies same (RC pools are better). Casino same (CCL doesnt have a smoke free night:-( ) Room service similar(CCL doesn't have the late night charge) Bingo same. Spa same.

Then add all the stuff that RC has. Rock climb, ice skating, boxing ring, rollerblading, flowrider, basketball, indoor movie theater. Royal Promanade.

CCL has self service laundry if you want to travel light with fewer bags airfares being what they are now (Used for first time last cruise.)

CCL is a perfectly fine Cruise line especially at the prices that RC wants right now.

  7. This question is for those that have cruised Carnival and other cruise lines as well. We debarked from our 5th Carnival cruise today. We are ready to try a different line with better customer service. We enjoy the shows, the comedy club and lounging by the pool. We like Caribbean ports but would also like to see Alaska. We are in our mid-late 40's and our youngest is17.

I ve only done RCCL and Carnival, but service is as much a crew component as it is a company issue. You could just switch between ships or between the other mass market lines

NCL, Carnival, and RCCL(despite what they want you to believe) are mass market lines. And are more similar than different as far as attention to detail, crew to passenger ratio, pampering and service recovery. If this is the aspect of customer service you want to improve then move up to next level cruise lines.

Your next level would be Princess, Celebrity, Holland America, Disney.

Princess and Holland America are owned by Carnival. Celebrity is owned by Royal Caribbean.

Plenty of choices out there. Find a travel agent you trust, thats why even in the internet age the cruise lines still pay travel agents to bring people to their line.

  8. I have always flown in the day of the cruise. Until this upcoming cruise.

But then again Miami is a 2 hour direct flight.

I always looked for the earliest non stop flight from the airport. Just in case.

I try to look for an airline that has more flights going out that day. Just in case.

Last cruise was a wake up call for me. Made it in time despite:

    1. Snow. - just enough to cover the grass and be glad I was leaving town.

    2. Mechanical failure of plane.

    3. 4 hour delay to replace plane.

    4. Baggage claim, had to find bag in an office on other side of a terminal under construction.

30 of us unrelated to each other who booked our own flights were all on the same plane going on the same ship.

Why was mine the only bag to be put on a flight that arrived 3 hours before us all?

Arrived at port while they were closing up shop. No line at all even the photographer on the gangway was putting stuff away. No picture (wouldn't have bought it anyway)

So this time I am leaving at 3 in the afternoon and staying in hotel overnight. $50. Includes shuttle from airport and shuttle to cruise port.

Now I only have a passport card which is good to cruise but not for international flights.

Also have the vacation time to be able to take from work the extra day and not feel it wasted.

Who know what the future will bring.

BTW: Wassup 4565- your story sounds just like mine last year.

  9. I tried to do the separate color thing but no luck. Answers are marked with ********

SO likes lazy vacations, I like seeing new things, we are considering compromise for vacation next year by going on a cruise...both of us are barely into the "age where a lot of folks like to deny their age", and would be (if anything) Geek-Americans whose past vacations have been to things like concerts and conventions and artisan craft shows (!).

For the first time out we're thinking of a 3-day or 4-day to the Bahamas (to see if we like the concept of a cruise vacation--if so, we have ideas for future, if not, we note this as a learning experience that is not horribly expensive compared to an all-inclusive). We're basically treating the idea of a shorter cruise as a Cruise Sampler.

We know what line we'll probably be going with (Royal Caribbean per the recommendation of many people who know us who've done the Cruise Thing; if we find we LIKE cruises a lot maybe we can someday try other cruise lines or just book the infamous Cow Room on Freedom of the Seas) and we even kind of have an idea of the port and/or ship (probably Enchantment of the Seas, probably Port Canaveral).

We would likely drive as we are in a part of the world where driving is actually reasonable to get there (especially if trading of shifts for driving happens) and airline travel is sufficiently problematic that it'd be more expensive to fly and/or we'd have to drive nearly as long to get to a hub airport with reasonable rates (Pretty much everything within 100+ miles is a regional jet provider. Unfortunately where I live you only get to fly cheaply and directly if you are a package or a lobster going to a restaurant :p)

I figure we can take advantage of some of the hotels where they have weekly parking if you stay a night, especially as we may be doing some exploration of Astro Stuff after the ship trip--basically drive in and sleep in PC, be bright and refreshed for the ship the next day, and stay a night in PC after we get back in port.

There are some things we'd like to do in the Bahamas, like the small-batch rum distillery (John Watling's), the choccy factory, try some cracked conch (and I've heard there are some very good hole-in-the-wall places for the latter)...Everything else (including the date!) is still up in the air, and I have not yet booked--if anything, I can be best described as "cruise-curious".

Passports are fortunately not an issue, as we do have them (and consider it a generally good idea anyways--for those few destinations I can fly to directly they do serve handy as ID for the Nice Folks With The TSA).

So I come to you kindly (and considerably more experienced) folks. Yes, I have a lot of questions. Hopefully these won't be too annoying, but I was always taught that the only dumb question is the unasked question...

    a) Do you have some suggestions as to possible other cruise options out of PC that would be good for first-timers? (I.e. for a newbie at cruising, what would be some good options for 40something geeks with a bit of interest in interesting food and a not-exactly-unlimited budget?)

Heck, for that matter, do you have any other suggestions in general for Cruise Samplers (basically quickie cruises for the Cruise-Curious who may be exploring whether they might like being on a ship enough to do a five- or seven-day cruise in future)?

    b) What would be probably the best time of year (that is not roughly April-June) to go?

*******personally I like September just after school starts.

b1) Re hotels--like I noted, we're driving. I know Comfort Inn and Suites and Radisson in PC do free/cheap parking for cruisers; what are your favorites for "stay the night, let the car vacation here and we'll be on the ship" sort of hotels in the Port Canaveral area?

    c) On travel agents--I have found a few decent ones locally (even one with both of the "Big Cruise Travel Agent Recommendations" for accreditation), and have a AAA travel center nearby (I also know you cannot recommend a specific travel agency, I'm all good with this).

Basically my biggie question is "are the little guys better"?

c1) Do travel agents typically charge for a consultation on "Here's the sort of cruise you'd like best based on your preferences for line, general things you like to do, and budget"?

(I am a complete and utter newbie regarding travel agents. Never used them, my family never used them, and pretty much am utterly inexperienced with them as all vacation planning I have done in past has been via AAA Tourbooks or the Internet.)

****** I used an internet travel agent once, she got me a great aft balcony at a good price, however i like to troll various websites to find ideas and dates so I generally dont use them however my advice is to use an agent that you feel comfortable with. Dont worry about the size of the agency.

c2) In general, can one get a better deal by booking with a travel agent or with the likes of Expedia et al or direct with the cruise line?

******Rates change daily, and even more often. You can get good deals from all of the above. Sometimes there are special offers outside of the cruise that an agent can assist with such as your hotel pre cruise and transportation to pier included.

    d) Neither of us get particularly carsick or anything like that, and everyone I've talked to says "If you can, spring for the balcony rather than a regular exterior room". Is it that much more worth it? :D

******* Ive had interiors, oceanview, and balcony. I liked them all, but if you can get a good deal on a balcony i`d do it. I can deal with any cabin but i personally prefer higher decks. My next 2 cruises are on the 2 lowest decks on the ship, but I couldnt resist the deal.

    e) Re travel insurance--any particularly good options? Any particularly bad options? Any travel insurance companies willing to insure a well-controlled diabetic and a well-controlled asthmatic?

    f) Speaking of the SO with diabetes--One of the drugs that keeps things so well controlled is a medication that needs to be kept cool (not insulin, but a GLP-1 agonist) that comes in little pen needles (so it doesn't take up much room).

Is there an additional charge for a minifridge and a sharps container, or can we bring a (very small) sharps container and a cool gel pack with us? How much of a PITA is it in practice to get aforementioned Cooling Method and Sharps Container?

(I know in theory you can note someone is a disabled traveler who needs some way to keep their meds cool, but would appreciate other commentary.)

*******there are mini fridges in the cabin where they try to sell you cool drinks. You could use that. I dont know about the sharps, but i dont see why you could not take them to the medical for disposal. --- others would know better

    g) When the heck IS the best time (on average) to actually bite the bullet and arrange this with a travel agent or a cruise booking agency? Is it better to book early, or is it better to book closer to the time of the trip?

******* The cruise lines will say a year in advance for the best rate but it doesnt matter. What does matter is that you must be paid in full 60 days prior to sailing. If you book a year out you can just pay the deposit, make payments and if you see a better deal prior to final payment you can change the booking. -- There are some promo rates that will not let you make changes.-- if you book early, you can get a cabin you want instead of what`s leftover.

What the heck is "early" and "late" as far as cruise booking, anyways?

(Again, never have really booked more than two months in advance on a vacation in my life. I'm used to "early booking" being "two months from trip" for hotels and flights, and (unlike with planes) it almost seems that cruises get cheaper the closer they get to the sail date--up to a point?)

    h) Other than the usual hints I've seen on the forums (plan for spending at least twice what you paid for tickets on things like boozahol and extras, turn the phone on airplane mode if not off (not a problem as I want to be in a Zone of Inaccessibility ;)), GET THE TRAVEL INSURANCE, pack light, etc.) does anyone else have their own suggestions for the cruise-curious?

For example, excursions that might be nice for a couple? Excursions that I should AVOID?

    i) This last one may be incorrigibly dorky, but it is a possibility since we'll be driving and thus we don't have to worry about carrying it on a plane. Is it possible to take your own kite on the beaches in Nassau or CocoCay? (No, I would not want to kite off the ship. That's dumb and illegal--especially as that's a good way to wreck a kite.)

Will they even let me take a kite on the ship to take to a beach? Has anyone ever done kiting from the likes of CocoCay's beaches or Junkanoo Beach or the many pay beaches in Nassau?

Again, please forgive me for asking as many questions as the average three-year-old, mostly sorting out curiosity at this rate...the whole concept of "hey, let's go on a ship" is kind of in the very roughest of planning stages in that the whole idea SOUNDS appealing, we kind of have an idea of what to expect, but could really use helpful hints from the community who've done it more than once.

*******Dont try to get it right the first time. The fun is in the learning.:D

Most important take the cruise and have fun, you will learn what you like after 1 or 2 cruises. The best thing is that there is something for everyone. From spa treatments, to steak and lobster. Buffet to fine dining. Casino to poolside. Library to movies. And then there are the ports of call. What you dont do this cruise, you'll do on the next one. No two cruises have to be alike. No two ships are alike when you consider that the staff are just as important as the physical plant of the ship.

There is a reason that many on here have taken many cruises, on many ships, many lines and visited many ports of call

  10. If you're doing a Celebrity cruise, they require anywhere from $200 to $300 in cash, that is put "on account". The amount is dependent on the length of the cruise. Once you get near to using up that amount, they can put a freeze on the sign and sail card until more cash is added to the account. On the last morning, she'll have to stand in line at guest services to get a refund if she didn't spend all the cash.

On Carnival they sent a check with the remaining balance back to me 3 days after I got home so you dont have to stand in line to get unused money back. Although I did have to stand in line to add more money to Sail/Sign card when I ran low.

Also do not use charge notifications / texts to phone as this can run up international roaming charges. Just leave cell phone in airplane mode for entire trip.

Do not use Debit card except for paying for the cruise.

Prepaid Debit cards may not work in some countries~ varies by issuer.

Cash may be in issue outside of touristy areas. Getting back change in foreign currency is common as they "dont have" change in US currency.

Credit cards are good to get a fair exchange rate. I like shopping in mexico and will usually charge in peso`s instead of worrying whether i haggled a good exchange rate from merchant.

Dont forget about the good old travelers check. But they are becomming less common.

  11. Sprt of correct. Except, please note that in the future, if you choose certain cruise lines other than the Carnival or Royal Caribbean type "mass market" lines, they require that ALL PASSENGERS on ALL ITINERARIES require a passport.

Sent from my iPhone using Forums

If sailing from US to Caribbean you can use a passport card. --- make sure you arent left in port because they arent good for international airline flights.

Also DL/ID along with a government issued birth certificate will work. Some jurisdictions have the official birth certificate in a Credit Card form.

  12. Like everyone else here I doubt that anything else will happen and no problems cruising in the future.

But Ive seen little round stickers on the ceiling with a clothes hanger in a bar sinister.

It may have been on RC but more likely that someone in the past had peeled it off.

Great job with raising a stand up kid. Wish more people would accept responsibility for their kids actions.

It seems like they only charged for the sprinkler head.... im sure carnival gave credits in the affected cabins worth more than 150$

  13. I find this thread interesting as I'm always reading that residents of the UK, Australia, etc. have all these consumer protections, yet in the US it is illegal to charge a fee when the customer uses a credit card. Whatever.....

Actually it has never been illegal to charge a customer for using a credit card. Just think about every time you put gas in your car.10 to 15 cents for credit. It used to be against the merchant agreement with the CC company to charge a fee to the customer for using a CC. That way more people would use CC`s and they would make money on the interest they charged the customer and the money they charged the merchant for accepting the card.

But that part of the agreement was rendered null and void with cc reform. The CC can charge the merchant what they want, and the merchant can pass that cost to the consumer, or as many do require a minimum purchase to allow you to use the CC.

At this point it is in the merchants best interest to not charge more as people just wont do business with them. By the same token, insurance can be cheaper for those who do not have excessive cash on premises.

  14. There's definitely more to do on Navigator and more entertainment. Carnival ships tend to be similar experiences so even though I have not been on the Dream I am comfortable with the recommendation. Personally I cant wait to sail on Navigator again, now that she`s gone through dry dock. It is a larger ship than the Dream and carries fewer passengers. I suggest that you visit RC`s website and look at what the Voyager class ships have to offer. .

I won't bore you guys with the details but I have to pick one Carnival Dream or Navigator of the Seas. the itinerary is completely irrelevant they both have a similar one.
  15. I apologize. Let me sum up what I think I learned. You can get any cabin as long as you are willing to pay for two people. Sometimes, you can pay 125% to 200% [or paying for two], but typically you have to wait for last minute. Smaller cruise lines may have singles.

I am a teacher, and cannot cruise last minute. I cruise February break and Easter break, both peak times. Thus, it seems NCL Epic is currently the best deal for those of us travelling solo and not wishing to pay 200% and who must travel on teacher breaks.

Please correct me if I got anything wrong. Thanks.;)

The supplement doesnt really matter. Especially on the Epic where the solo cabins cost the same or more than the inside cabin w/ supplement on most sailings.

Either way, its just like booking a hotel room. The room costs $1500 whether its for 1 or 2 people. If it was marketed that way and sold that way there would be less chatter about it. But they want to charge for each head as well 3rd and 4th person rates. So this is the cruise lines reward, all the grief over supplements.

And since RC usually comes out better in straight $ vs. carnival I'll go w/ the better deal.

Although, when these new ships and refurb's are completed (3 years) there will be many more solo priced cabins and we will see where the big supply/demand line will fall. But I'd think it will still be right about where it is today, about 150% of a PPDO price on a similar price cabin.

  16. I am just saying that being in the upper/middle of the 6 levels of the past guest program with Royal Caribbean earns you the TOP level when you trek over to Celebrity. Though the top level with Celebrity does not carry the same weight on Royal. Like I said, it's definitely better than nothing! Having a 6 level tier program trying to mesh with a 3 level program presents complications. My feeling is that's it easier to get to the "top" with Celebrity than it is with Royal (as a function of actually sailing the individual lines) - so I am not upset at all with the prospect of jumping over there with Diamond status. I am not sure, but my guess is that when we do sail on Royal that we'll start out with 80 points - as a starting point towards Diamond Plus. It would appear that the only real additional perk of Diamond Plus over Diamond is a "personalized gift" and access to the concierge lounge. What does access to the "concierge lounge" entitle one to?

    THANKS!

    Tom

You would not suddenly get 80 points on the way toward D+. The arrangement is that you would enjoy the privilege of diamond. In order to move up you still have to accumulate the required number of points on RCI. Same is true vice versa.

  17. I avoided NCL for years for that same reason, negative comments on other cruise boards here....then my DH found a deal on an NCL cruise that we couldn't pass up, so I thought, 'Ok, we'll give it a try.'

Our first shot at NCL was a 15 day repo cruise. I must admit, I wasn't sure after that cruise how I felt about it. It was very different having a new wait staff every night and I 'thought' I missed traditional dining. The food in the mdr wasn't as good as what I was used to getting in CCL's mdr.

But, we enjoyed other aspects of the cruise very much and began alternating cruise lines.....each NCL cruise we took was better than the one previous and all of a sudden we noticed little things that NCL did that other lines didn't and before we knew it, we became NCL 'Cheerleaders' (for lack of a better word.)

This year we cruised on CCL and then NCL 6 weeks later.

Having done both lines with only 6 weeks in between, we got a very good idea of the differences. While NCL seems to be improving, CCL seems (to us) to be going in the opposite direction....if not on a decline, I can at least say with certainty they are getting stale.

I don't know which cruise line you regulary sail, but NCL is definitely worth a shot. Obviously it doesn't work for everyone, but it is SO worth a try. You may just love it :)

Started on Carnival, and now doing RC. I was introduced to cruising by my Father (took him 4+ years to get me on one) who just loves it. Of course he's never been on NCL- no specific reason. But I will look through the site again and see about making a reservation for next spring. Had to skip my planned Spring cruise $$$.

My question is how do the 3-5 night cruises on their smaller ships compare to this love sonnet of a review:)

  18. I loved the detail and wanted you to know that your positive experience has again peaked my interest in sailing aboard EPIC and NCL. There has just been so many negative comments that I have avoided looking at this ship/line.

As an aside, I always read the negative comments to get an idea of the worst things that can happen. Of course taking things with a grain of salt and making my own opinions.

    But again thanks.

  19. If you ever feel like that stick of TNT, remember you are on a foreign flagged ship in international waters. The ships personel can and will take action against you that would not happen in the US and without recourse since the incident will be recorded.
