  1. Can you please explain what select dining in the MDR is?

What percentage of passengers are still wearing black tie and evening dresses? Friends who have flown to Hong Kong today prior to a cruise say they still'dress up' even though the dress code has changed. We don't know whether we should take formal evening clothes on our upcoming cruise.

Any advice about what we should wear in the evenings would be helpful as everything I have read so far is confusing.

    Many thanks

    Jo

  2. Hattie, very interesting as we board the QM next week.

Three minor questions as we are now packing as we leave for New York tomorrow. Are tissues provided in balcony cabins?

Are any of the formal nights more formal than others? The reason I ask is that I have two very formal outfits and two not so formal ones

Do many of the men wear ties on informal nights?

We will be disappointed if people don't dress smartly in the evenings.

Enjoy the rest of your trip.

  3. I didn't realise that Cunard offered tours after the cruise but we don't really want to do a city tour as we are staying in NY before we go on our cruise.

We are planning to get a taxi to a place in Manhatten where you can leave your luggage for the day,it's called something beginning with S but can't find the name right now, does anyone know the name of the company?

    Thanks

  4. A silly question but when we leave New York on our cruise in two weeks time and spend three days at sea it will be cold to start with.

Can experienced cruisers tell me if cruisers go straight into summer clothes ie shorts, cut offs and tee shirts or do you start off wearing long trousers and long sleeved tops? Same query at the end of the cruise. Just need to know if I need to pack several pairs of long ? Summer trousers or just cut offs for me and shorts for him.

    Thanks

  5. Only three weeks to go to our cruise and I think I have most of my clothes just need one more top for daytime, another wrap and some dressy earrings and perhaps another necklace. My big problem has been shoes, cannot wear any of my evening shoes due to swollen feet etc so have had to buy wedges, flat shoes and what my partner calls 'granny sandles none of which are very elegant or pretty but will have to do.

It's so easy for men,my partner has just bought one pair of sandles and a couple of new shirts whilst I have been trying to sort out all my outfits since we booked the cruise!

We are staying in New York first so need to take warm clothes as well.

Hope everyone else is not worrying too much about Cunards dress code,I've decided it's not worth worrying about,if I'm underdressed on the informal nights so be it I just want to enjoy myself....

  6. Thanks for all the advice,so just to be clear we can buy alcohol in the duty free shop at Heathrow bring it into New York then take it through the cruise terminal and then on to the ship?

Would not want to buy some bottles at Heathrow only to find it being confiscated as we get on the ship

    Thanks

    Jo

  7. We are planning on taking one suitcase each for a thirteen night cruise and one shared suitcase for our pre cruise stay in New York. We will also take a large bag to use for things we buy whilst on holiday.

We have upgraded to World Traveller Plus on BA so can take 2x23kgs each which we think will be fine for us.

I have outfits for each of the formal nights but on informal nights will wear informal clothes, skirts or trousers with stylish tops no cocktail type dresses for me! My problem is shoes and bags and trying to minimise the number I need on the cruise"........

  8. We are departing from New York and had hoped to take champagne, baileys and brandy on board. Do people think this will be OK?

Should the alcohol be in our cases or in our hand luggage?

A friend of mine had a bottle of champagne in her case on a recent Holland America cruise and it was confiscated. It was returned to her when they arrived in Buenos Aires as it was a special bottle and was a present for someone she was visiting in the city.

  9. Cocktail dresses for informal evenings?

Firstly I don't have any cocktail dresses and secondly they don't sound very informal. I was planning to wear trousers and a smart top or a skirt and nice t shirt the sort of thing I would wear to go out to dinner at home. Does that sound OK

  10. Hi all,

We are also booked on this cruise and have started to think about what clothes we need to pack. We are staying in New York for three nights so we will need some winter clothes, will warm clothes be needed for the first two or three days of our cruise?

As far as evening wear is concerned we know what is expected on Formal nights although my partner wonders if men wear white dinner jackets rather than black whilst in the Caribbean.

I'm not so sure about informal wear, jacket and tie for men is expected but not sure how informal the women will be. I was thinking of wearing the sort of outfit I would wear to go out to a restaurant for dinner. Does that sound OK or will other women wear more'dressy' clothes?
