  1. Yes.

We booked a category I inside cabin on the Volendam and received notification that we had been relocated 3 days prior to sail away.

The cabin we were assigned was considered to be an upgrade (OV on lower promenade deck), but I think that was a bit of an assumption on HAL's behalf and we probably wouldn't have minded so much of they had checked with us first. Fortunately for us, it wasn't an issue, but I can see how it could be in certain circumstances.

So it definitely does happen . . .and we did specify that we did not want to be upgraded.

  2. If you want connecting cabins (we are travelling with young children), you need to book early too.

We simply accept that booking early and wearing those all-too-often high, initial prices is what we need to do in order to bring our kids.

Not everyone can book last minute and wait for that price drop . . .which may or may not happen.

  3. I wonder if someone mixed up clothes irons and hair straightening irons? Perhaps it was a misunderstanding because it does sound odd. I assume many women (myself included) would have tongs/curling or straightening hair tools, especially with formal nights to prepare for ;)

  4. We went on the Volendam to Asia (China, Vietnam, Thailand, Cambodia, and Singapore) for a 12 night cruise in Nov 2009.

We thoroughly enjoyed it and thought it would be something we would do again 'one day' - perhaps in 5 or so years.

Whaddya know, we are booked on the same ship almost exactly 1 year later! LOL. Guess you can say we are hooked.

Can't wait to get back on the boat in 60 days - yes I'm counting!!:)
