What was your first cruise ship? What cruise line, the year and the itinerary? (if you remember;) ) Did it get you hooked?

Ours was Royal Caribbean Cruise Line's m/s Viking Serenade, a converted car ferry, back in NOV 1991, a 3-day L.A. - Catalina Island - Esenada, Mexico - L.A. cruise. Never forget our first impressions - we were hooked from that day on!

Viking Serenade (still sailing today as Island Escape)

ithinkourfirstcruise was on Sitmar’s Fairwind in aboutApril of 1978.security was so lax way back then that when we got bored with a Carribbean port we’d jump on a tender and go Out to tour any of the other cruise ships in the harbor. No ID, no seapass card, nothing. Ah yes, life was sure simple back then . . . . And NO MASKS!

  2. I hope you have a wonderful cruise PEverdell and I am sure Viking will get it right. Looking forward to reading the next reviews.

We have been following this post with great interest, since we booked this same itinerary for the Nov '18 sailing on Viking Sea. We are pleased that Viking appears to be taking steps to try to correct the many problems that took place on the maiden voyage on the same itinerary, but after much soul-searching we have cancelled our reservation. We simply do not want to put this much money at risk in the hopes that the problems will be eliminated.

We're booked instead an Antarctic cruise in Jan '19 with the newly-refurbished Azamara Pursuit, and we're confident that they will perform as well as they have in the past.

The Amazon remains on our bucket list, and we are truly looking forward to trying Viking Ocean, so we'll re-book once the many bumps in the road have been smoothed out. And we sincerely hope they will be, so you all can thoroughly enjoy your cruise!

  3. We were also aboard when the accident took place, and from that moment on we were simply amazed at the excellent manner in which Azamara handled the situation. They took an extremely proactive approach and kept all guests well-informed. IMHO corporate policy was quickly formulated and more than fair in all respects.

This situation has caused Azamara to take a major financial "hit" in reimbursements, refunds, future discounts and loss of revenue. And they clearly have ignored that, and have put in place policies to make whole everyone effected.

I have no doubt that this situation will prove to be a blessing in disguise, and the net result will be an asset to Azamara rather than a liability.

Simply put, on a scale of 1 to 10, Azamara has earned a solid 12.
