I'd highly recommend Moby Dick's for the stingray city experience. While they go out to the reef for snorkeling for those who wish to do it, you can just stay on the boat; you don't have to go snorkeling. Afterwards, there is plenty of time for all with the stingrays.

Sailed on the Imagination in Feb 2014 for a four day cruise. Loved the ship. Didn't feel old and outdated. Food in MDR was great. Buffet food was fine. The only things we didn't like were the blue lights in the Lido buffet and the not so funny comedians in the Comedy Club. Had an aft cabin on the Upper deck. Would not hesitate one minute to take the same cruise and same cabin again.

Another thing to consider is how you want your fish processed - filets or smoked. We did a combination of both but I wish I would have had more of it smoked. The smoked salmon was delicious. Either way, they get shipped to you in portion-sized vacuum sealed packages. Very convenient. Of course, it is more expensive than buying it in a store, but these are fish you went out and caught so there's always a story to tell.

Is the processing price ($2 per pound) before or after they clean it? I can see that being pretty pricey if it is calculated on the before cleaned weight.

Whatever the price quoted is, be sure to add FedEx shipping. When we went a few years ago, the processing and shipping charges for the six of us on the charter was close to $300.00! for about 36 fish.

Count one more vote for #2. And, please let us know what you decide.

We sailed the first week of February and didn't have any adverse conditions with A/C or heat. We were comfortable the whole time.

We took the Carnival sponsored 'Wine Country Tour' back in February. It was great and not very expensive - $39.99 pp. We boarded a bus and took a 45 minute drive away from the city to LA Cetta Winery (very modern) and then to Dona Lupe Winery (much smaller and rustic). Had a great time and we each received a bottle of wine to take back to the ship.

Hopefully, you read my review from Feb entitled 'Had a great time". The 4 night cruise which sails during the week (not over the weekend) is not the same rowdy booze cruise as the 3 day counterpart. I'm confident you and your group will have a fantastic time. Enjoy yourselves and don't worry!

We had a family reunion on the Splendor a couple of years ago. There were 38 of us (my parents, their eight children, all the spouses and grandchildren). Most of us don't have lots of disposable income to spend on pictures taken on a cruise, and we all have nice digital cameras to take our own. I'll admit, though, that the professional photos taken on the ship are fantastic and our own photos can't compete with them. As a gift to each family, my older brother bought each of us 5 to 6 photos of our families that were left for sale by the end of the cruise. He presented them to us as gifts and we now all have wonderful photos and memories that we couldn't have afforded on our own. He spent hours in the photo gallery choosing the best photos. I can just see him walking up to the register - a 60 yr old bachelor, with slightly balding gray hair, buying 50 or 60 photos of families, teens, young girls, etc. Do you think Carnival would even question his purchase which must have come to over $500? I think not. And how would he have felt if they had some policy in place of questioning someone buying photos because it was 'creepy'?

I guess the bottom line is - if you are afraid someone may buy your photograph and use it for nefarious purposes, just say 'NO' to the photographer.

We had a great time in Ensenada on a Carnival sponsored excursion called 'Wine Country Tour'. For $39pp, we boarded a modern bus with a tour guide who explained all about Ensenada and the areas we were traveling through on the way to two wineries. The hour long trip went through the countryside which was not particularly beautiful; in fact, it reminded me of where I live in So Cal! The first winery we visited was a very large and modern operation run by the third generation of Italian immigrants. Very impressive. They give you tastes of 7 or 8 different wines along with some cheese, bread, and olives. You're then escorted into a beautiful gift shop where wines could be purchased to take back home with you. I appreciated the lack of high-pressure sales tactics to force you to buy something. Very laid back. The second winery is more rustic and quaint in its way. All in all, we had a great time. What made it even more enjoyable was that we went with the two other couples who were our dinner table-mates. We were all new friends and had a great time together. As an added bonus, they give you a bottle of wine (cheap) to take back with you.

Everyone likes to take a shot at the top dog in every race. I've sailed 6 times in my life: 3-Carnival, 2-HAL, and 1-Princess. I prefer Carnival as they deliver more vacation fun for the dollar than any other line. I especially despise the 'Wal-Mart' of cruising comparisons that so many are quick to say.

As one once said in defense of Carnival - they own 50% of the cruise industry, they pay cash for their ships, and they acquire other cruise lines like a hobby.

We were visited like clockwork by a bar server as soon as we sat down each and every night. Sounds like it might be hit or miss depending on ship.

Read my post #3 above. Just walk to the Casino (maybe 10 minutes max) and you should be able to enter the water at many spots around it. Free.

We were there on Feb 6th and found a spot behind the Casino. There was a trailer offering rental gear, but I think anyone could walk down the concrete steps into the kelp beds. There were a few people snorkeling and scuba diving, but I'm not sure if the access to the water is public or not. It looked like it should be. One thing I forgot to add. The Lido buffet is lit with blue neon lights. I found this very uncomfortable on my eyes and wished they had chosen a more neutral color.

What a shame you missed it. Epic Rock was probably the very best show I have seen on any cruise. I am 59 years old and I absolutely loved it. It was filled with classic rock anthems that I remember so well. Queen, Journey, Aerosmith, Kiss... It was pretty awesome. And the show started not with the Cruise Director, but with a guitar soloist. I saw it on both cruises, and plan to see it again in March. :)Bob

You know, we probably would have checked it out, but it wasn't offered at a time that was suitable for our schedule. If I remember, the only time we could have seen it was one night at 10:30pm and by then we were tuckered out from the days activities and didn't feel like attending a late show. Sorry now that we missed it. Gives us an excuse to take the cruise again real soon!

2) did you notice if they offered afternoon tea on the sea day?

1) They have a display case at the pizzeria with six different types of pizza available. To the best of my recollection, I don't believe gluten free was one of them. I did see quite a few gluten free choices throughout the buffet, however.

2) I did not see anything about an afternoon tea, but another CC member responded that they did offer afternoon tea on the sea day.

After reading many recent reviews of this ship and itinerary, I'm wondering if this was indeed the same cruise we just experienced? By no means do I consider myself a cruising expert, but this was our fifth cruise in the past 3 1/2 years so I have a pretty good idea what cruising is about and what one can expect while on a cruise. We have cruised with Carnival (3), Princess (1), and Holland America (2). For me and my tastes, Carnival delivers the most cruising experience and they provide it at lower prices than other lines. That represents a great value for those of us who don't have the means to pick any cruise without regard to the cost. Being on the West Coast limits us on where to cruise and which cruise line to take. At least we do have a few choices where traveling to the departure port isn't required. Here is my review.

EMBARKATION: Carnival has the process down to a science, although we did encounter one small glitch during embarkation. While checking us in, the Carnival agent noticed our reservation was 'flagged' and could not proceed without calling over a supervisor. The supervisor tried to get us on board, but he too had no luck. We were asked to take a seat and they would research the problem and get back to us. At this point, DW and I were wondering if our reservation was lost, our cabin given away, or there was a mistake and we would not be able to cruise. No one could tell us why there was a problem or what the problem was. Ten minutes later, a nice reservation agent came and got us, said we were checked in, but we needed to go to Guest Services on the ship to find our what the problem is. The man at Guest Services explained to us that the window on our Ocean View cabin had leaked rainwater in during the prior cruise and maintenance had to silicon the seal and the room would not be ready for one hour. That was it? Here we were all worked up that there was a major problem and all it was was sealing the window? A lot of anxiety could have been prevented if this minor problem was stated on the computer when we first checked in. Perhaps Carnival should look into doing just that. End result was we had to spend an hour longer eating and exploring the ship before we could enter our cabin. No big deal. At least Guest Services comped us four drink coupons to make up for the delay. That was nice.

THE SHIP ITSELF: Reading the many reviews before our cruise, you would think that the Imagination was a dump and ready to fall apart. Nothing of the sort. The ship was fantastic. The atrium is remarkable and all the public areas were in great shape. The crew were constantly cleaning and polishing and no area I saw looked outdated and in need of renovation. We utilized the gym and were very impressed with the quality and quantity of the exercise equipment. Very modern and high tech, much like you'd expect at an on shore fitness center. Mini-golf was fun the jogging track is nicely blocked form the sea wind and we were afforded wonderful views of playful dolphins swimming alongside us.

OUR CABIN: We had an Ocean View aft cabin on the Upper deck. I chose this location in order to have an aft view for the first time and also because the Upper deck is sandwiched between staterooms above and below us, thus avoiding noise from public areas. The room was big enough for a cruise and we never felt cramped or lacked any storage or closet space. We did miss having a couch and small table, and there was certainly room for those, but Carnival chooses not to put those in their rooms. The bed was very comfortable. The bathroom was fine, although another shelf or two for toiletries would have been nice. The shower was larger than we experienced on the Splendor or on Princess (which had the smallest shower I've ever been in). We only saw our cabin steward once when we had a problem with the TV, but never needed to see him as our room was made up twice a day and never needed to call for extra towels or housekeeping services. He did a fine job.

DINING: You'd think from reading many reviews that Carnival was feeding us slop. Nothing could be farther from the truth. The buffet had a wide variety of decent food and always had a nice selection of fresh fruits and vegetables which we really appreciated. On the sea day, we ate lunch at the pool by the Terrace Grill and was pleasantly surprised to see a carving station with leg of lamb. Served with mint jelly, I enjoyed it tremendously. I had never see leg of lamb at a buffet before. The hamburgers and hot dogs were okay; not Guy's Burgers by any means, and the pizza was okay - not great, but certainly what you'd expect at a 24 hour pizzeria. Carnival does need to improve on the service at the pizzeria; there was never enough to serve the lines that formed and the cooks always had to go in the back to retrieve the pizzas. You'd think they would be made and or ready to serve out front. We ate dinner every night at the fixed early seating and really enjoyed the food and the service. The dinners were excellent and always had something for everyone to choose from. The salmon was very good, the prime rib was fine (although they need to improve on the horseradish), the lobster and shrimp were very good and they make a very nice flat-iron steak (Holland America has never made a steak for me the way requested). DW had turkey and said it was the best turkey she's ever had. The jerked pork loin was a bit on the spicy side, but you can't say it lacked flavor. Appetizers and salads were excellent and dessert - well, I have four words for you - warm.chocolate.melting.cake! Our server and his assistant were very attentive to our needs and were always available. We were visited each night right after being seated by a gal who took our drink orders. I have to say that the food on Carnival is better than HAL and as good, if not better than Princess. Plus, were were in and out in about an hour and a half which is 30 minutes quicker than Princess and HAL, so that we could make the shows after dinner. Speaking of the shows......

ENTERTAINMENT: The is the one area of the cruise that disappointed us. The two comedians were just plain boring and bad. Total lack of material and it seems they were just 'winging it' off the interaction with the audience. Heck, I can do that! There were two big shows, DIVAS and & 70's & 80's ROCK. The DIVAS just did not appeal to us (we're in our late 50's) and we decided not to check out the rock n roll show. Plus, the shows start off with the cruise director bantering with the audience for 30 to 40 minutes, so that when it says the show starts at 8:30, it really starts at 9:15 once you get past the cruise director's shtick.

FELLOW PASSENGERS: Being a mid week cruise during the school year, we didn't expect to see many families with young children. This proved exactly true. If you want to take a cruise with mostly adults, then do so during a school week. Our fellow cruisers came from all walks of life and we met many fine folks who we got along with just fine (six of us even took an excursion together and had a great time). I take exception to the stigma that Carnival is the 'Wal-Mart' of cruising. What Carinval does (this was our third CCL cruise) is provide a fun and comfortable cruise vacation at a low price and to me this represents value. Carnival delivers more vacation for the dollar. We have more fun on Carnival than the other two companies we've cruised with and even the corny singing and dancing waiters and napkin waving passengers make dinner fun! We really felt like Carnival and it's employees went out of their way to make sure we had a great time. Just shows you can't believe everything you read.

PORTS: Catalina was just plain fun to explore on our own and we plan on going back on our own to pick up where we left off. Ensenada - We took the ship sponsored Wine Country Tour to visit the LA Cetto and Dona Lupe wineries and for $39.99 per person, it was money well spent. Being an hour away, we got to see a lot of what Ensenada is like. The wineries were interesting and we ended up going back to the ship with a free bottle of wine. After returning, we decided to see what the town was like near the port, but were turned off by the constant panhandling of trinkets and chiclets by little girls, urged on by their moms sitting near by. One little girl even walked in front of us constantly pointing her finger at my wife's purse. It's heartbreaking, but we just have to say 'no' and push right past them.

Overall, we had a great time and would consider doing this cruise often as it is close by to us, very affordable in the winter, and we had a lot of fun and ate very well.;

Think about one thing we get from HAL at no extra charge - maybe the twenty-four hour room service, ocean views, entertainment you can walk to, or walk away from.

Last time I checked, these 'no extra charge' items came as part of the cost of the cruise fare.

No, it's just a way for them to make more money. Insides were sold out, balconies were not. So it's worth it to upgrade an already booked insider to a balcony and sell their old inside room.

Why not just try to upsell the person calling about an inside cabin to an OV or a balcony at just a slightly higher price rather than giving the balcony away for free? I would think you could easily sell a balcony to an insider for $100 or so.

On our four day cruise to Mexico in a couple of weeks, I heard that the formal night is the second night, after leaving the port of Catalina at 4:30pm.
