  1. We have 4 total but my kids will want separate beds, and I could only see the couch in the NCL floorplan.

When we on the star a few years ago we had an ocean view but it was really small with the beds pulling down over the main bed

    Thanks for the info!

We just got back from the escape we had an oceanview on deck 5 (5752) we had a great week

It was a king bed (or two twins if separate) and then a couch that will "pull out " to a bed for two. Fifth bed is pulled down from ceiling. We found the room to be plenty of space for the 5 of us and our luggage. The bathroom is large too. However we did not spend a lot of time in our room. So much to do on that ship!

I will add the couch bed did sleep my two teen boys (5'8 and 6'2) and it was not the most spacious but they got a free cruise so they are smart enough not to complain to me. We asked our room steward to leave the bunk beds set up all day bc they came in and out all day and took naps, read, etc

There is a curtain that can separate the bunk area from the king bed, we used that if someone needed to change clothes and bathroom was occupied. Can't say we were all in the room at the same time except to sleep.

  2. We are a family of 2 adults and 3 children aged 18,16 and 12 booked to sail on The Escape our of NY this December. We are booked in cabin 01-5750 - it says it sleeps 5 but I’m just worried about it being a tight fit - any information from somebody who has travelled in this cabin category would be much appreciated [emoji4]

We are a family of 5 (kids 12,14,16) sailing the escape ocean view on deck 5 in Feb so I'll let you know how it goes . We did it on the breakaway in 2014 and it was fine. We were never in the room...so much to do on the ship and in ports. And deck 5 is just one flight of stairs from the 6/7/8 public areas so we felt it was a great deck to easily access everything.

  3. We're in the same situation with a family of 5. Have you already been? If so, how did it work out? I have some concerns with the cabin (location/no balcony/tight quarters).

We did the OV on the breakaway 2 yrs ago, family of 5. It was great! Our room was larger than our friends with the balcony. Our kids (teens? Ages 10,12,14) used the bunk beds and pullout and we had the king bed. Bathroom was quite large too. Booked a similar cabin on the escape for Feb 2018... just reading this thread and realized I probably won't get the upgrade email bc there are no balcony rooms for 5 ppl. We were kind of hoping for a last minute surprise upgrade to a 2bdrm, or haven. Oh well we are hardly ever in our cabin anyway !

  4. On our Breakaway cruise in 2016 we signed up at the terminal before we even boarded the ship. It was super easy and it just happened that we were sitting right where they set up the table.. they did not have a sign or make any announcements. Crew just set up a table and started registering kids. So it might have been a one time thing. But it did save us time because we were sitting there waiting anyway. Hoping the same thing happens before we board the Escape in 2018....

  5. Yes these rooms sleep 5, we stayed in one 2016 to Bermuda . Our 3 kids were 10,12,14 and we fit just fine. We were never in our room- so much to do on the ship and in Bermuda... we had friends staying in a balcony room with 4ppl and our room was much bigger. The steward will put away the beds and take them out but we asked to keep it open by my teens liked to come back to room mid day for naps/reading so it was easier to keep it set up for beds. Our last cruise we had two connecting OV rooms and it gave more privacy but we got such a deal on this one we grabbed it (for $3200 w/bev pkg for the 5 of us during a school break NY to Bermuda) it was well worth it. I'm not home now or else I'd post my photos of the room. Plenty of storage room for our suitcases too. We loved the breakaway! Enjoy!

  6. Just curious to see how most people from LI get to/from the NYC pier.. Hire Car service or take LIRR to Penn?

I'm hoping to convince family/friends to just drive us into city but if it's not possible I need to start researching prices for all options for our April cruise.

    TIA

  7. We have cruised twice with 3 kids and have another one coming up in April.

We did an inside on carnival fascination - space was tight but kids were young. Drove from NY to FL to save even more. (It was the Feb school break) I think it was $2500

Next was NCL dawn out of Tampa. Two ocean view rooms that connected were cheaper than a balcony. They didn't have insides for 5 ppl. Loved the extra room and extra bathroom. We Booked our flights to return the Monday after break (used Marriott points for a free night) and saved $1k on flights that way.

Booked both of these cruises last minute (in Dec for a Feb cruise)

For this upcoming cruise we found a great deal on the NCL Breakaway for NY to Bermuda. Kids sale free- with free beverage package- and it's over the April school break for my kids. So all 5 of us are cruising for about $3500. But we will be 5in an oceanview family (O1) room. I'd love a balcony but BA doesn't have them that can fit 5.. And moving into 2 rooms meant no kids sale free sale. For this one we booked 14months out.

So there isn't one way to save $. I just did research and signed up for various travel email alerts-- being flexible helps.. We didn't want to take kids out of school but that would have saved us even more$

As others have said- excursions can really add up- we didn't book any through the ship, instead we walked off and toured on our own. Did a lot of research beforehand. Most ports have a lot of free/low cost options, but be realistic about your expectations. (We knew we couldn't do the 1 day Atlantis visit or dolphin swims-it was just too expensive) but we made the best of it. Big breakfast on the ship meant we skipped lunch while touring and had snacks instead.

Cruising winds up cheaper for us than an all-inclusive in the Caribbean or Disney world but we are east coast and able to drive to ports so that helps.

Good luck-planning is half the fun

  8. We just flew Delta from NY to Tampa (5 of us) and we didn't want to pay $25x5 each way there and back just to check bags. Also there was no need to worry if bags got lost (like they did on our disney trip). We only needed shorts/t-shirts and flip flops so it was possible.

We travelled in our heaviest clothes (Jeans/long sleeves and a sweatshirt w/sneakers) and we flew back wearing those same clothes. To pack I rolled up everything and in some cases used XL ziplocs and squeezed the air out of them to fit more. ( I already had them but you can buy a box at Target for about $2)

Dont overpack! You really can reuse your clothes all trip! Don't really need too many shoes. I wore same dressy sandals when we went out to dinner every night.

As for toiletries I used the 3.4 oz bottles for my conditioner and toothpaste and the cruise (NCL Dawn) gives soap and shampoo. Deoderant is a solid so not a problem.

Are you flying in early for the cruise? We had a few hours to kill in Tampa before our cruise so we went to CVS to buy razors and sunscreen because we knew we would need alot of sunscreen for 5 people in 7 days in the caribbean. If you don't need as much you might be able to go with just the sample sizes.

At the end we had leftover sunscreen we just left it in the hotel room after the cruise because we couldnt fly back with it. Oh well. Still only about $5 loss.

FWIW Every trip I go on I seem to overpack. This was the first time that I was forced to really weed out what I didnt really need. Was a perfect amt for 7 days. Even my kids were fine carrying their backpacks and a rolling carryon. They are 8,10 & 12 and we all had no issue.

    Enjoy!
