  1. Flatbush - thanks for the reply, but your estimates don't necessary apply to my case or most people. 50 cents a mile is crazy talk. I will drive our mini-van for at least 10 years, extra 2,400 miles will not change the value too much at the end of that 10 year period. I change my own oil, I use a credit card that gives my 5% back for gas purchases. I would never pay more than $60 for a nice hotel on hotwire. We are going to eat no matter what option we take. Packing lunch or drive thru is cheap. Parking at Galveston for 7 days is $54.00 I get 6 weeks of vacation time from work, I am going to take my days one way or another. I would not make any extra money if I did not take them. If we fly, we still have an hour drive to airport, airport parking for a week, costs of transportation from airport to hotel and than to port and back after cruise. I'm an accountant and believe me, I have an excel spreadsheet comparing all the costs of each option and for the four of us, driving is a much better option. Now if it was only two of us, that is a different story.

  2. Our Minnesota family of 4 have driven to New York, New Orleans, Tampa and will be driving to Galveston next week for cruises. We enjoy the two days of driving, good family bonding. We play travel games, get some reading done, enjoy each others company, etc... And counting all the costs, to is about $1,000 cheaper per trip to drive than fly. We can afford to take more vacations.

  3. Thanks for everyone's help! Greatly appreciated.

Day of disembark, before 7:30 flight.

We will take our time getting off boat. Than I was thinking about dropping luggage off at the same hotel we stayed at the week prior? Than walking to either Central Park or Times Square. Eating lunch somewhere and taking a taxi or car service back to airport from the hotel.

Is walking to either Times square or central park doable?

I'm guessing hotel will charge us to hold bags for a few hours.

  4. There are four of us, the kids are old enough to wheel their own bag. So, one person pulling one bag. How long of a walk is two avenue's, from Skyline Hotel to dock?

We probably could get by with 3 bags, but as I mentioned we can check four for free on the flight, so I did not feel it was needed to squeeze. Maybe Dial 7 or Carmel car service for a minivan, for $64 is a better idea than to try to fit in one taxi? How much would a Taxi cost?

Our flight back is 7:30 p.m.

  5. More details. We are flying into LGA in March 2017, landing about 9:00 a.m. on a Saturday. Going to Skyline Hotel in Manhattan for one night. Plan to walk to Pier next morning for NCL cruise. After cruise, we have a later flight back at LGA, so in no rush to get back to airport. I was thinking taxi back to airport too.

Obviously we have not packed yet, we have a variety of different size bags to pick from. If we pick our 4 biggest bags, they would be 2 28" and 2 25". We probably could get by with smaller bags if needed. My credit card allows me to have 4 free checked bags for American Airlines, so I was thinking of taking the 4 biggest bags.

  6. We stayed at this hotel in June 2016. It worked out great. Nice hotel, nice service, and a good hot breakfast before leaving. We left our car there for 7 days. Still there when we got back. Paid about $220 for one night stay, round trip transportation, and parking.

Only issue we had was when coming back we called to meet driver at a certain location but understanding each other was a challenge. We were calling on a noisy street and our Minnesota accent and the drivers Asian accent made communicating difficult.

  7. Would a family of 4, two adults, two grade school age kids, with 4 bigger pieces of luggage fit into a NYC taxi? Or to ask another way, would the driver take us?

If not, what percentage of taxi's are minivan size?

I've looked into a car service, but they require a larger car for 4 people with 4 pieces of luggage, 4 with 3 would be ok under their requirements.

  8. Any good or bad experiences with Carmel Limo in New York?

Looking for transportation to and from Manhattan Hotel and LGA airport. Their prices online for a sedan seem to be less a Taxi.

Family of 4, with 4 pieces of luggage, taking a cruise in March of 2017.

  9. I am thinking of going to the Statue of Liberty the day before our June 2016 cruise out of New York. We have two boys, ages 6 and 9, not super active, more laid back book readers. I see going to the crown requires a long walk up narrow stairs. A total of 377 steps, according to park web site.

Has anyone down this? Is it too much for young children?

    Any other advice?

I thought I read you can reserve tickets one year in advance, but it looks like 6 months on web site. Is 6 months correct?
