  1. I appreciate these suggestions and have printed out the forms and instructions to take to my vet.

You all are such experts.  Thanks a bunch.  My guide dog Regina will love this cruise.

This thread is very helpful.  Thank you  I am taking my guide dog on a Celebrity Edge Cruise April 14.  I do not plan to get off the ship in Mexico but only in Key West.  Is the regular international health certificate enough or do I still need to get it endorsed with that special stamp which requires a trip to Chicago last minute. I tried to look this up but the info is confusing.

  3. Hi. I am taking my guide dog on a cruise in April. Does anyone have experience with getting off the ship at the following ports? Aruba, Bonaire, Caracoa, Carta Hena and the Camen Islands? I am not sure where to start looking for permissions. I know I will get the health certificate and she has proof of rabies and a microchip. What else do I need to know? You all are very knowledgeable. Thanks.

  4. I took my guide dog on a Celebrity cruise to the Caribbean -- took her off the ship in San Juan P.R. and it was so hot on her paws that we ducked inside -- a bar -- smile. Did not take her off the ship on st. Kitts or St. Martin -- there were a lot of loose dogs. I just returned from a cruise without taking a dog -- I am between -- and it was fine either way -- your dog will get a lot of attention on the Disney cruise if you take him. The box they used o n Celebrity was spruce mulch -- be prepraed to go check it out first thing because it is not always set up right away. Also ask for a garbage can nearby so you can clean up.

Roz, I am so very very sad for your loss of Morey and you and your family are in our prayers. Go on the next cruise in his memory.

I am sorry to hear about your loss -Thinking of you ~Jen
  5. I just returned from a 7 night Caribbean cruise on the Celebrity Eclipse with my guide dog. She did great. They built a 4x4 potty box for her on a windy part of a crew deck area. I did not take her off in ports except for San Jaun -- it was too hot for her feet there though so mostly we walked to bars and stayed indoors. I left her in the cabin in the other ports -- St. Maarten and St. Kitts but only was gone for a couple hours. Shirley was fine with that -- although I brought a crate I just tied her leash to a chair and she was comfortable on her fleece mat. She amassed quite a fan club on the ship amoung crew and passengers. You might ask someone on the ship to walk the guide or check on her if the person will be gone for a long time -- or hire one of the crew members to do it. I also left Shirley in the cabin when I went up to the lawn club as she was not allowed to use that grass and I did not want her to know there was grass on board. Enjoy that wedding at sea. It sounds wonderful.

    Thanks!

Well, she has the service dog because she's visually impaired. So any information about any special services they offer for her would be welcome. We're traveling with Princess so it's their policies we're concerned with. I don't think that she plans on bringing the dog off of the ship in most ports because then, how could she do things like the Zipline tour? (That's kinda rhetorical but if you actually do have an answer other than "she couldn't" we'd love to know.) The big concern right now, I think, is being able to get back on and off the ship to water him and take him to the potty while the ship is in port. Will that be possible/practical?

  6. Thanks for the info on the ports. I may leave Shirley on the ship and just pop off to look around for a couple hours. I will take her off in San Juan because that is covered under the ADA. St. Maarten I am still considering and am not sure I want to have her go through another rabies shot when she just had a 3 year shot last year -- it is a lot to put her through for just a couple hours on shore and I will have someone with me so maybe she would be more comfortable staying in the nice air conditioned cabin? Thanks so much for the information. Mary

  7. Hi, I am taking my dog on her first cruise and of course am worried about the potty box. Also, I have heard that it is best to leave the dog on the ship while we go off in port but Celebrity says I can't leave the dog in the cabin. I did get a portable crate and they say this is okay. Our ship goes to St. Maartin, St. Kitts and San Juan -- I guess I could take her off in San Juan and St. Maartin if I get a rabies booster but is this wise? I have enjoyed reading all the posts -- thanks for your help. Shirley is an 8 year old guide from Guide Dogs for the Blind. Thanks for your help and comments.
