  1. We LOVE Viking. We specifically did this cruise to see the Expedition ship with it's toys and unique experiences. This cruise from Toronto to Milwaukee crosses from US to Canadian waters. Each has specific laws about what you can and cannot do. When in US ports Octantis could NOT open the bars, could NOT operate submarines or kayaks, and docked in locations that were NOT equipped to handle this size or style of boat. Empty loading docks with piles of gravel were what we got to see at one place from our cabin. This is NOT what we've become to with Viking. Many of the crew members were so new to the ship (and Viking) that we spent more time teaching them what we needed than them knowing what to do. I could go on and on but won't. The ship was beautiful, has a ton of potential with the right crew, destination, opportunities to do new things but this leg should be dropped from their itineraries until they work out the logistical issues. For what we paid for, we definitely did NOT get our value from it.

  2. We've been twice in the early season (May). Once needed parka, gloves and hat and the other we were in shorts and long sleeve tshirts. I NEVER go with out 1 pair of shorts. You never know. It's still the best time. If you want warm vacation, why are you going to Alaska. Go early as you can in the season and enjoy the animals coming out of hibernation.

  3. The butler and concierge don't receive anything from NCL's $12 per person per day service charge. That money goes to dining room staff, your cabin steward and some behind-the-scenes support staff.

Tipping the butler and concierge is a personal matter and there's no right or wrong amount. You should tip based on how much service you receive from them. We don't use their services much, and we set our base tip for the two of us at $10 per day to each of the butler and concierge...in other words $70 to each for a 7 day cruise, but we increase or decrease it based on the quantity and quality of service we receive. That amount will seem too little to some and too much to others...again there's no right or wrong number. If you decide to post the question on the NCL board you'll get a variety of answers.

Thank you njhorseman for the best and most complete answer.

  4. Don't hate me but we got to book in an NCL Owners' Suite on an upcoming trip. I know the cruise line adds like $12 per day per person for tips for the staff. But how much more should I expect to tip for the additional staff including the Butler and the Concierge? Is there a recommended amount on top of what they receive from the pool? Thanks for any advice from those who've been there.
