You are giving us some ideas for next year when we try again.

HAL and Princess are corporate siblings - both owned by Carnival Corp.  Many similarities, especially in Alaska.  You can't go wrong with either.

I took my first cruise on the SS Norway in 1987. MDR was fancy, BUT I had to wear coat and tie 5 nights out of the 7. Choc-aholic midnite buffet was fun. Portholes limited the view - especially when they capped them during a storm.

The first cruise is always special, but I prefer the ameneties and atmosphere of today.

My first cruise was a New Years cruise in 1987-88 on the old SS Norway. It still had the class of the old ocean liners. Enclosed Promanade. Port holes for windows. Choc-a-holic Midnight Buffet! Life was good. Even better now.

Well I am going to get my MRI results and see where the surgeon go's. Thanks everyone with the feed back. I am hopeing for a 75% recovery, maybe just use a cane.

If not, 500.00 is a bit much. I will look around, maybe , worse case, do a wheel chair. If the recovery really go's bad or no surgery, OK then i will cough up the dollars for the scooter.

A viable mid-choice is to rent a wheelchair, if you have someone to push it or can do it yourself. Cost is less, no overnight charging.

In Skagway, the White Pine train trip has a special car for handicapped people. It has a power lift to load you into the car and areas to park the scooters/wheelchairs. Also seats for anyone who accompanies you. Staff takes very good care of you in there.

SS 8068 is a full SS located midship that works well. Roll-in shower and bathtub and no step up to bathroom. Door to balcony includes a ramp on both sides of door to allow WC to access balcony. Other H/C features include a "911" button that, when pressed, results in a phone call within a minute to inquire if you need assistance. King bed. Easy to get around room in a wheelchair.

As you may guess from my handle, I am also highly upset with this change in policy! As one who carried a case of wine for 2 people for 14 days on several cruises, and still had "significant" bar tabs, HAL is more likely to miss my Future Cruise bookings than any modest increase of room charges on my next cruise in 2 weeks.

Joannie - you have email with pictures of SS 8068 on the Oosterdam and Zuiderdam.

These are great rooms with plenty of room to get around in a wheelchair or walker.

Some of the primary differences that we noticed in a Handicap room are:

- a ramp on both sides of the veranda door to allow the mobility challenged to use the balcony.

- the bathroom is more handicap accessible with a roll-in shower as well as a tub, and LOTS more grab bars. SS HC rooms only have one sink, which is a small price to pay.

- there is a "911" button by the bed which gets a call from the operator to see what the problem is.

- there are buttons by the bed to open/close the drapes (not sure if regular SS rooms have this).
