1. Hi. We are traveling to Hawaii on the grand princess with someone that has difficulty walking and uses a scooter. Can climb a few steps, etc. and there will be three of us thereto help. Lahaina is a tender port. I have also heard it has steep stairs to get up to the street level once you get across on the tender. Does anyone have experience with this port? How many stairs are there to get to street level? The scooter is a foldable one that we can carry onto the tender. Just concerned about the walking up the steps and possibly walking down steps to get to the tender from the ship. Input, please.

  2. Does anyone have experience with tendering in Maui w/a lightweight scooter. Can walk a few steps to get on tender. Concerned about standing in line to get on. Scooter folds up and member of our party can carry. Do they provide priority boarding for handicapped? Ty

  3. Greetings from the Star somewhere west of Vancouver Island! We did not have any problem boarding before our scheduled time of 1:30. There was a long line to get to security, and the regular line after check in was pretty long (priority boarding had a secret back door, lol). :)

HOw do you get to the secret back door? Is it after security? Thank you!

  4. First off, I completely agree with you. Live and let live. As long as someone is following the rules there is no reason to make a fuss.

Secondly I hope no one feels I was suggesting they implement a "no fragrancy policy" LOL Remember that one little spritz is good, 73 spritzes no so much so

Lastly, have a wonderful cruise and enjoy every moment! Look forward to your report on returning.

What a wonderful positive attitude about life! If all of us could take your views - there would be little issue. We always follow the smoking rules and feel it is respectful to all. Thank you!

  5. I smoke and I have no problem with Princess' new smoking policy. I never smoked in my cabin previously, so the policy change doesn't affect me. I go to the designated areas to smoke. I do wish there were someplace quiet, that I can sit, read a good book, and smoke a cigarette without having to leave the area, but haven't found one.

I've smoked on the port side of the Lido deck as one of the areas that allow smoking. Unfortunately, sometimes there are so many smokers, that it's difficult to find a place to sit and smoke, and other times, there have been nonsmokers at the next table who make disparaging remarks, even though they are seated in the smoking section. With the Lido Deck parties, pool activities, and music, etc., it can get very noise there, too.

I've also smoked in the cigar lounge (especially when it's really cold outside and the wind is blowing). At least in the cigar lounge I don't have to hear anyone complain (although I have heard folks complain in the hallway outside the lounge). Unfortunately, I'm not really into sports, so all the cheering and jumping up and down when the game is obviously a good one, doesn't allow for a nice, quiet peaceful place.

I did try the port side Promenade deck once since it "supposedly" allows smoking, there weren't many people around--just a few folks walking around, there were nice deck chairs to lounge on, it was quiet, and seemed like a good place to relax and read. Unfortunately, every time I did smoke a cigarette (two cigarettes in a three hour period so it's not as though there were a hazy fog around me), someone would walk by, wave their arms around like crazy, and start making very rude remarks (one woman who walked by the second time did the same thing, but added some coughing even though I wasn't smoking and had put the cigarette out the first time she walked by)...so I finally gave up.

I try to be a considerate smoker, and would never consider smoking where it isn't allowed. I understand that not all smokers are considerate, and not all nonsmokers are rude. All I ask is that I be allowed to smoke somewhere on the ship.

It's true that reducing the smoking areas will increase the number of smokers in that area, and consequently the amount of smoke in that area. So Princess' new policy will result in more smokers congregating in those limited smoking areas. Nonsmokers, I promise you I will never smoke in the nondesignated areas, and certainly never in a cabin or on a balcony; all I ask is that I be allowed to smoke in those designated areas without condemnation, and without rudeness. Smoking is legal (yes, I know it's not healthy, but neither is overeating, or caffeine, or alcohol--and before someone flames me and says that smoking affects others' health, so does alcohol).

Princess (if you're reading these posts), I fully support your new policy. I ask that you keep in mind that many cruisers do smoke, so please continue to provide appropriately comfortable designated areas, and we will continue to cruise with you.

We were just on the Grand and they have a wonderful aft outdoor patio section with comfy furniture that is sectioned off. No loud music, etc. It is right by the new studio one five disco. We loved that place -- you could go there without having to experience the evil eye, rude comments. I wish the other ships would adopt this type of area.

  6. I'm wondering if there are more requests for UBD on formal nights. I would think that if someone scheduled UBD simply to avoid formal night, it would be cheaper to rent a tux or pay for an extra bag to bring dressier outfits. :D

We are not big fans of dressing up....had to do it for years....happy to not have to anymore! We want to do UBD on one of the formal nights, not because we won't take dressy clothes (for the other formal night), but because we don't want to wear them. :o

We always do the UBD instead of formal nites. Do not care to do them anymore and the cost to rent a tux on the ship is at least $100 -- so we take those dollars and buy the UBD. We are typically one of the first ones on the ship and I call room service right away and have never had a problem getting the UBD for the first formal nite.

  7.
I remember that well...that was the first year we cruised and our 1st was on the Caribbean Princess! It was determined that fire was directly related to smoking, wasn't it?
No it was not. Report indicated that it may have been related but no definitive link could be made. No determination and no direct causation. Sorry!

    • Excellent gelato is available at the cafe on Plaza Deck for a mere 50 cents/scoop. Minimum serving is three scoops.

At the cafe?? Sapphire princess does not have an international cafe and the ships that do no longer have gelato or any pay items (other than coffees, drinks). Can you please clarify as I would love to have some - but where do we go?
