  1. I second Galveston and before you go, pass the time by reading Issac's Storm or see the Youtube movie of the same name.

Thanks for sharing the YouTube video; I had no idea of its existence. I fell in love with Erik Larsen’s storytelling in Isaac’s Storm, plus living on Texas Gulf Coast the subject matter is close to heart. His latest book Dead Wake (story of the Lusitania) was my cruise reading our last Alaskan cruise.

I also put my vote in for Hotel Galvez, especially for those who are driving in. You can use their gated parking garage for very cheap if you stay there pre-cruise (or even at Harbor House, a sister property right near the cruise pier). And Uber is a good alternative if you don’t want to wait for the hotel shuttle (or like us, forget to reserve it).

  2. This is GREAT! Please tell your son he’s a dynamic story teller. I have kids who were at one time his age, and were fortunate to have their first cruise at that time, so I appreciate it from that fact. But, the thought that went thru my mind is that his viewpoint is what most adults need to have. A cruise is a wondrous vacation filled with sights sounds and tastes, and (barring truly disasterous experiences) we forget that when we get hung up on negatives that in reality are not that important in the grand scheme. I aspire to feel like your son every time I step on board!

  3. Just off Vision OTS with new menus. At first wasn’t sure about everything being on one page and ordering everything (including dessert) at the same time, but it made for a nicer dinner IMO, and more streamlined which added to the experience. Of course, we do MTD so not sure if it affects the scheduled dinner differently. Maybe less choices but still met my tastes. On a similar note, I have to comment that for the past 2 years or so, sailing Liberty twice, Explorer and Vision once each, the MDR beef and lamb is exceptionally good. I had the leg of lamb one night, and lamb chops the last night, and they were YUMMY! Prime rib was perfect too. I love Chops but I think for my next cruise in Sept. I’m not going to bother with a specialty restaurant; just going to do MDR solely.

  4. We did Alaska this past September, Explorer OTS out of Seattle. I’m glad we did, but do agree that there’s not much time for sightseeing. We had 1688 (corner aft balcony, deck 10) that offered spectacular views (just rained a lot, so didn’t get to enjoy it as much as we would have liked). Only booked excursion was the Skagway train thru White Pass, but due to engine problems it was cancelled. If you sail end of season, you need to be okay with plans being changed at the last second, but I’m glad we did it and would like to go back.
