  1. Dave,

It was downright cold!!! We hit a blizzard going and coming home. The drives were not fun, but the cruise sure was.

Yes, it won't be long until we're looking at that again, and I'm not looking forward to it one bit. I'll take that Caribbean with you. :D

What a difference 2 days make...

  2. Ulva, Earl, Dangit, cruiselover, and cwittman - thanks for sharing your Mardi Gras stories and keeping the memories alive!

Romy - thanks...It's always nice to see how the early days of cruising, which was predominantly aboard either Costa, Princess, or Carnival in the '70s and even into the early '80s, carry such vibrant memories and hooked so many of us on cruising forever. It's especially fun for me to see how many replies and views this thread has gotten. As my second post ever to Cruise Critic - this thread has some legs! Shows what a classic Mardi Gras was.

They might be faster, bigger, richer, fancier, have more entertainment, better food, and more to do...but the modern vessels of today will never match the atmosphere and uniqueness of the 'classic' vessels of cruising's first decade!

Zackiedawg, what I would give to step back in time and onto one of these classic vessels! When I was little, I absolutely adored The Love Boat which probably explains my passion for cruising. That, or I was a drunkin sailor in another life:D. Another Grand Dame I've read about is the Norway which I believe has unfortunately been scrapped as well. I'll do some searching and post the link if I can find it, it's been a while but it was fascinating reading too, although certainly not quite as entertaining;) .

Thanks again Zackiedawg, just think, in 20 or 30 years, the ships we're sailing now will be classics, eek, so will we:eek: !

    Happy Sails!

  3. I forgot..that I love to sway once I get off the ship at one of the ports.

At this point, I love the smell of my bodywash, because it smells like coconut and makes me feel like I'm on one of the islands. Can't wait for 8/28, hey that rhymes!

Now that's a new one! I like it. I'll have to add some tropical body wash to my packing list:D. I love the swaying too, I'm one of those people that sometimes sway for up to 10 days after returning home. Very weird the first time!

    Happy Sails!

  4. Thanks everybody! That settles it; mine will stay parked. I really appreciate all your help and the picture.

BTW, 3Beagles-hi there, I have 1 beagle-Baxter, are they great or what? There seems to be a few beagle-fans around here.;)

    Happy Sailing!!!

  5. Packing question...Does the Pearl have decent, hand-held hair dryers or is the 5 watt wall-mounted, "Honey, I'll be done in a couple of hours" number?

I usually bring my own, but am learning to pack light if at all possible.

BTW, I lurked over on the fashion & beauty forum and figured checking specifically with NCL/Pearl might be a better option.

    Thanks!

    Happy Sailing!!!

  6. Cayo Levantado is a small island and I'm not sure you can get there any other way than through the ship excursion. I may be wrong though. The ship's tenders will take you directly to the island from the ship and back. To me it was well worth the money. As a rule we never book excursions through the ship, we always book privately. In Samana I would go with a ship excursion.

I mentioned earlier that the "taxi" drivers don't speak english, silly me: even if they did, they couldn't drive you to Cayo Levantado as it is an island.:D What I meant was if you were going to tour Samana....

I've also read that if you find a guide to take you by boat to Cayo Levantado the only boats apparently offered are small and rickety metal boats.

    Just needed to correct myself.;)

    Happy Sailing!!

  7. Most likely we will too- but I'm looking forward to seeing what the NCL crowd does when they start their reviews in the fall/winter. I just don't like the feeling of being "ripped off' :(

    Amen to that Sister;) !

Good idea about upcoming reviews. She's been in Alaska for so long, it will be great to get some ideas about our itinerary!!!

    Happy Sailing!!

  8. I'm just wondering why NCL is charging $33.00 basically for a boat ride to the island and a chair! I'm still considering getting over there on my own or exploring other beaches. It's alot of money for four of us....

Hi 2boyz, ordinarily, we would take a cab, etc. independently but after reading quite a few comments regarding the drivers (apparently very few speak english) it poses a risk of getting back to the ship on time. We just don't want to take that chance. We'll save our pesos;) where it is less risky. Besides, we are landlocked and will happily pay $66 for all day at a beautiful beach!:D

    Just my 2 cents.

    Happy Sailing!!!

  9. You're welcome. The only thing I might warn you about is the delicious drinks they serve in a coconut shell. They taste wonderful going down but my daughter (who had a non-alcoholic one) and I both became ill the next day. It could have been coincidence though I do have to wonder about the ice they used at the little island bar. Sometimes I tend to forget about the ice situation!

Noted. I'll take a something in a can please:p . Good advice Lovetocruise. Thanks again!

  10. We enjoyed our excursion to Cayo Levantado, especially after hearing from those we went into Samana. I've posted a link to my photos of Cayo Levantado below to give you an idea of what it looks like. Hope this helps!

Thanks lovetocruise, those are beautiful pictures! We've booked the Beach Escape thru NCL (only one we've booked so far thru cruiseline). After seeing these pics, I'm really glad we did! I like the paintings too!

    Thanks again!!!;)

  11. Thanks, and don't worry about repeating what others have said. I've been trying to convince my husband that this was not an island to do on your own. If it weren't for the repeats, I may not have convinced him. Thanks once again to cruisecritic!!! :D

    Shelly

What a relief to know I'm not the only one with this problem, I mean husband:p . I just booked it, I'll let him know that morning...

BTW, we're on the Pearl (NCL) and was noticing here that $40 additional for food was offered meaning 2 different tours, 1-w/food, 1-without. I only saw one offered thru NCL for $33pp with no mention of food. Am I confusing this with another cruiseline? This is the Cayo Leventado Beach Escape.

    Thanks for your help and

    HAPPY SAILING!!!!
