  1. Good evening notamermaid!

It is like seeing a good friend again!  We followed your posts and actually graphed the 3 river sites daily last summer and early fall, and ended up postponing our Rhine River Getaway.  We have rescheduled for May 1-8 with Viking on one of their new ships and have a couple days in Amsterdam at the end ~ and are getting very excited!

Thank you for your travel details, and for monitoring for us the ever-changing levels of the Rhine River.   We owe you much thanks and praise!  Your posts are such an enjoyable read ….. 🙂

    Warmly,

    Laurie & Jeff

  2. Have you heard anything from Viking yet? And did you decide to cancel? Keep us posted!

Wish it was better news but I certainly won't blame the messenger! We leave for Amsterdam on Tuesday and cruise on Friday. Ironically the rain dance I've been doing for the Rhine may have backfired as it's supposed to rain here in Arizona early next week. Hoping that doesn't affect our flights out - it would be ironic if it did given how dry Arizona usually is this time of year.

We did hear from Viking Wednesday with the news of a ship swap, not too surprised, but with the continued drop in levels....we did decide to cancel....honestly I've been so consumed with monitoring all this, that I didn't feel prepared anyway. We look forward to planning another cruise with Viking in the near future, and I'll continue to read about the updates ~ with very best wishes for everyone that decides to carry-on!!

  3. Alruna will be in Basel this sat sept 29... You will prob board the tialfi ... We are on it now and will arrive in Amsterdam sat..

We were able to sail through ... Today we do the Rhine gorge. Has been a great cruise so far... You will love it

    Thank you russandcheryl,

I've been so obsessed with reading all of these posts I haven't even taken the time to get excited yet....the ship doesn't matter to us, but being safe and reasonably on plan would be nice.

    Safe travels to you!

  4. To all - We were fortunate to complete our Basel to Amsterdam cruise on the Viking Alruna without incident. We began in Basel on September 15 and ended in Amsterdam on September 22. I think the crew probably had some careful steering through the gorge. On both of our two extra days in Amsterdam, it rained but at the wrong end of the Rhine.

    Good sailing to everyone!

AztecDuo ~ we're due to leave on Friday....haven't heard anything from Viking yet ..our route is Amsterdam to Basel on the Alruna. We are watching this board for any updates!

  5. That language has been there for a while. Interestingly enough I got the same response verbatim from the person responsible for monitoring the Viking FB page when I asked about Rhine water levels on one of their posts a few days ago. That response oddly came to me via PM and I replied that Avalon's page seemed to be more forthcoming about the possibility of ships swaps etc. for Rhine cruises. I got a little more personal answer after that and certainly a more honest answer when I spoke with them live today. I know that the truth isn't always the most marketable approach, but it's what counts the most to me.
I agree ~ we spoke with Viking yesterday and heard the same. We're still on track to leave Friday for Amsterdam ~ praying that water levels will be ok on the Rhine! I'll do my best to post an accurate picture too...

  6. @ azbirdmom,

We do have the "cancel for any reason" insurance through Viking, yet we're still undecided as to cancel or not. I'm still trying to get a true picture of what's really happening with ship swaps, bus trips, etc ~ and finding that to be very challenging. I always appreciate NotAMermaid's updates (I've been graphing the water levels for the past month!) ~ trying to make the most informed decision that we can. Sometimes I feel that it would be a "relief" to the whole system to have a few less tourists trying to navigate around the area during this crazy weather.

I'd love to hear others' thoughts and opinions........still deciding.

Thank you all ~ stay safe everyone!

  7. We are on the Viking Idi currently in Cologne (9:30 pm, just leaving). Informed this evening that we will proceed through the Rhine Gorge tomorrow, albeit slowly! Yea-no ship swap!
Thank you ~ please keep your updates coming! We are deciding this weekend whether or not to forego our trip. We're scheduled on the Viking Alruna next Saturday! Appreciate all insights.....

  8. June does have a wide range of temperatures and weather, as Floridiana has said. From Basel to Amsterdam you will be going through more than one micro-climate, so you can hit a heatwave in the upper Rhine valley and have torrential rain in Amsterdam (if you are unlucky).

Here is a site to help you along as you get closer to the date of your cruise: https://www.wetteronline.de/wetterbericht The page is the overall weather for Germany. On the right there is a graph that says 14-Tage-Wetter. There you can change the town and it gives you the weather for the next 14 days.

    Hi Notamermaid,

What is the best was to monitor Rhine River levels? We are booked on Viking from Amsterdam to Basel from 9/29 to 10/6.

    Thank you very much!

    From Michigan
