Following disembarkation (1/18/14), what is the best plan for the two of us to tour Valparaiso (we'll have our luggage w/ us) & Santiago w/ transport between the cities? We are also looking for an affordable, clean, safe Santiago hotel within walking distance of the historic center. We do not opt to tour the wineries since we live near many. TY - Pat B.

We stayed at the Sheraton in Santiago, great hotel but location not the best. We had everything organized with enaturchile. They did the transfer from the airport to the hotel, show and dinner one of the nights and the tour/transfer from out hotel to Valparaiso and vina del mar. We had a great day the guide was very funny and knew a lot about everything.

We took the Magdalena Island excursion, and we definitely walked on and around the island amongst the estimated 100,000 penguins there. We had about 2 hours to roam around the island and to climb up in the lighthouse.

Perhaps on the day that gracecarmo posted about, the conditions were too rough for the ferry to put ashore-it is a roll-on, roll-off type ferry with a ramp at each end. So you walk down the ramp to get ashore. It was great! I have read good things about the Otway Sound excrusion as well-tough choice! Hope this helps!
