  1. Here are the pants I took to Europe & handwashed in the sink. I have them in navy & stone, and am stunned that Talbots has them on clearance because they are super quality.

I'm going to buy a couple more pairs while they still have them because they are a great weight for pretty much year round.

You can order from Talbots online and have it delivered to Canada, or maybe check a local store.

Another place to check is CABI. Don't know if her stuff is available in Canada yet. It's sold in at-home stores and at outlets here. I bought a pair of stretchy pants there last winter and they are great for travel - especially for the plane. I slept in mine and they held up well (i.e., no puckering knees!).

Just received a pair of these in navy. Ordered with some reservations - I had visions of zippers at the ankles. They fit well and on my shorter legs are full length -- just as I had hoped. Thanks for the posting!

  2. I love The Vivienne Files!

This is another good blog for traveling light ideas...

I discovered this site before a 14 night cruise to Alaska. I used her 4 -4 - 4 plan. Four black garments, 4 grey garments then white and color for the last 4. I never have packed so little and felt so well dressed on any trip before. Every top and jacket went with every pant or skirt. I had to buy some items before the trip - black cotton polo from LLBean (washes so well and no wrinkles), grey jeans, heavy cotton/poly twill pants.

  3. We enjoyed the "Days of '98" show. Walked up Broadway, got tickets at the theatre and then walked around until time for show. Also have enjoyed the walk to Yakutania Point. Can get maps for this and other walks and hikes at the NPS office. To get to the start of the walk, you walk toward the river and bypass the airport. There is a footbridge over the Skagway River. Then turn left and follow the signs.

  4. On my visit to the internet cafe in Ketchikan, I visited a fabric shop and quilt shop on the same floor as the internet cafe. It was on the second floor of a shopping center building at the end of the dock near the small boat marina. Also in Juneau, there was a nice shop near the internet cafe. Again on the second floor of a building on Franklin Street. A nice touch was that the internet card I bought in Juneau was also honored in Ketchikan. I bought an hour and didn't use all the time in Juneau.

  5. My first was Nieuw Amsterdam in 1985 to Alaska. I went with my mother and we were upgraded from an inside to an outside with a window - not a porthole!

The cruise that hooked me on cruising was on Celebrity's Zenith in 1997. It was that ship's first time through the Panama Canal from San Juan to Los Angeles. My husband kept protesting that he had cruised the north Atlantic to England and home from Germany during and after WWII and wanted nothing more to do with ships. He was hooked on cruising after 18 nights on the Zenith. Seems there is a difference with stabilizers and not being in a bunk with soldiers above and below you. And I think the food and dining atmosphere was better.

  7. Haven't been on HAL with my stepdaughter recently. She has Meunieres (sp.)disease and wears hearing aids. On the Diamond Princess last summer, she checked with the sound crew in the theatre and they matched a receiver with the stage microphones. The set looks like the TV ears (which she also has) and allowed her to hear clearly, she said, the entire show each night. That became the most enjoyable hour of each day for her. At dinner, since there were four in our group, we asked for a corner table for 4 in the Anytime dining room. She sat in the corner to cut down on the noise from the room and could hear most of what we said. However, if she were alone in her cabin, we could not reach her by phone or knocking on the door -- she just couldn't hear it. There is definitely a safety issue that needs accommodating.
