  1. Set the phone to manual time for you whole cruise. Leave the time setting alone and just adjust the time zone setting to suit local time wherever you are. In manual there is no need to use airplane mode unless you are on an airplane - clue in the name. Once back home, you can go back to automatic and the phone will reset time and time zone after a few minutes contact with your home provider.

Us poor folks use Airplane mode to avoid the outrageous roaming fees (particularly data) charged by our carriers. Must be nice not to have to worry about that.

  2. (A fellow Ontario resident) From Belleville, you may actually consider driving to NYC instead of the drive to Toronto then flights. Leave the day before, stay outside of NYC for the night, then drive in and park at the cruise terminal. If you have the time, you will probably find that it costs less $ than parking in Toronto + flights (for 2) + taxi/driver to/from a NYC airport.

We're from Ottawa and do the same thing. Although pier parking is "expensive" that plus a hotel about an hour from Manhattan will be less then the cost of one airfare.

  3. not at all, very myopic thinking, it's not just the cruise price, hospitalization, missing a port, medical evac

Having been medically evacuated from a ship I can tell you with certainty that insurance saved me from the cost of:

    1. Out of coverage medical costs.
    2. Flying my wife from the next port of call to where I was evacuated.
    3. Her hotel and meals.
    4. Cost of flying us both home.
    5. Expenses for her to return to our departure port to recover our car and the remainder of our luggage.
    6. Other misc. costs

All told the payments were over $100,000.

Anyone who travels out of country without proper insurance is an ... well you know.

  4. I guess I need to be clued in to what people are so excited about regarding Amber Cove. I got the impression it was going to be sort of a Grand Turk experience. So, a free clean beach, but what's the big deal?

I don't get the whole manufactured port of call thing either. I'd rather experience the real islands.

  5. 3/4 of your suggestions are "fluff" any savvy cruiser would consider insulting. The other 1/4 are things too complicated for the cruiseline to adminstrate effectively.

Clearly, based on the nauseating debates, the only loyalty perk the masses care about is the party where free unlimited drinks are served. Anything else is irrelevant.

And the Platinum free Laundry. Of course any program is going to have to be revenue neutral so fares would have to,increase or a cut mad somewhere.

  6. As long as you haven't reached the mandatory final payment date, your TA can get you a lower rate regardless who much you have already paid you can get the lowest rate you are eligible for. The only thing is you may have to pay your full deposit depending on what rate you are looking at.

Once you pass the mandatory final payment date, you are only eligible for lower rates if you booked early saver. Check with your TA they will be able to tell you.

  7. The "taxes" are port fees and taxes, not a salestax, it has nothing to do with the price of the cruise.

Often Carnival will lower a cruise fare to compensate for a rAise in taxes. The often go down as well. Carnival will credit your S&S card in those cases.

  8. I'm loyal to Carnival (nothing against the other lines) and would never jump ship. And as for not filling the ships can you post where you found this fact.

It is right in the article: “We’re holding the price and giving up the occupancy, and that’s worked very well for us over the last year,” Chief Financial Officer David Bernstein said"

It should be noted (despite the error in the article), this is Carnival corporate, not Carnival Cruise Lines, so they could be talking about price increases on their more upscale lines, not necessarily CCL.
