  1. As stated above drop off should be no problem with porters there to help.  If I were you I would be more worried about disembarking because there is no area for pick-ups at the terminal.  As I understand you must be picked up across 12th Ave from the terminal.  Not sure if the porters will help you moving luggage across the 9 or so lanes of 12th Ave.  Maybe somebody has some experience or you could ask this question on the East Coast Departures section of the United States section of Ports of Call.  We have always driven to the port ourselves and parked on top of the pier so I can't give advice on disembarking.

  2. 11060 is below the pool deck.  If you look at the deck plans for deck 11 the midship stairs and elevators are just aft of the pool deck and the forward stairs and elevators are forward of the pool deck.  It used to be that you only had to deal with chairs being moved in the morning with a cabin below the pool deck but on more recent Gem cruises the pool deck gets used for nighttime entertainment so you may have to deal with that if you retire early.

  3. I've never heard of anyone getting turned away. One thing that should be mentioned is that the pier parking is only for those taking a cruise and not open to general parking. Well except for special events at the Intrepid, Fleet Week for example. We went on Christmas week cruise back in 2012 and the lot on pier 88 was not full. It really depends on the number of ships that are departing or have departed to determine how full the lots are. And yes there is parking on all 3 piers if needed and the entrance is at 54th street well north of the pier.

  4. Thank you for the info... do you remember was it formal dress that night?

We were on this cruise and attended the CC Thanksgiving dinner and I don't remember any special dress restrictions. Although I don't remember anyone being less dressed than business casual. And yes some were more dressy than others. We had a pretty large group at dinner, I think about 60-75 so we took up a fairly large portion of the main dinning room.

Thanksgiving was on our third night on board so it wasn't dress up or not night which is usually the second night.

To give you an idea (I'm male so keep that in mind) I wore khaki slacks, white button up shirt and a sweater. I have yet to pack or wear anything fancier on a Norwegian cruise.

  5. We are on your sailing and the cruise will not be cancelled. NLH Arizona is correct that they are getting mixed information from the islands. Note that the 2 itineraries before ours stop at St Thomas which a month ago I would have thought impossible. And Sint Maarten/St Martin has been saying they will be ready for cruise ships soon. NCL would like to keep as much of the original itinerary intact as possible. If they don't have to travel as far south as they are for the 10/31 and 11/11 sailings then they can save fuel. But they need to make sure there are excursions. They depend a lot on their hired port agents to keep them informed.

Come join the roll call. We have an active group on there https://boards.cruisecritic.com/showthread.php?t=2427199

  6. The ferry to St George's doesn't run on Sunday not to mention that unless things have changed the Dawn doesn't arrive at the Dockyard until noonish on Sunday so the first day is really a half day. The bus schedules are also different on Sunday so be sure to check them out as you make your plans if you plan to use them.

  7. I agree with biker@sea. You might also have less company on Sunday at the beach also, I know we did.

You are lucky or unlucky depending on how you look at it because Wednesday May 24 is Bermuda Day. Lucky because a lot of things are closed because of the public holiday. Unlucky if you wanted to go to the parade and festivities in Hamilton. Three years ago we hit the holiday on Monday on our Dawn cruise and now that we know about it we know not to schedule a cruise that is in port on the 24th unless of course we want to see the parade and festivities.

Enjoy your cruise, Bermuda is a beautiful island and we can't wait to return in 2018.

  8. The Gem leaves today and again on the 11th for 10 day eastern Caribbean cruises. On the 21st it leaves for a 9 day eastern Caribbean and when it returns on the 30th they start the 7 day Bahamas cruises departing on Saturdays and the Breakaway switches over to 7 day Bermuda departing on Sundays.

ImwithTED - enjoy your cruise. We leave when you return on the 21st so try to leave her in good shape

  9. For a credit card it is not a hold but a pre-authorization. However for a debit card a pre-authorization equals a hold. As mentioned above this also happens at hotels and as an FYI the same thing happens if you use your debit card at a gas pump. So now not only did you pay for the gas you put in your car but there is a hold for some much larger amount on your bank account also. Use debit cards only for things that do not require any pre-authorization.

  10. We were on the Dawn 5/23 - 5/30 staying in a mini suite and I was able to connect my camera to the TV using the composite cable that I brought in my camera bag and view pictures and videos that I had shot on the TV. Not the best quality but much larger than viewing on the camera screen There were also HDMI, component and VGA ports on the back of the TV. Yes finding the source button on the remote was a guessing game (upper left if I remember correctly) and class of room may alter TV type.

  11. Hi glm7777,

Our roll call has been pretty quiet so I'm not sure what kind of response you would get asking about other single 20 somethings being on the cruise but it certainly can't hurt to ask.

On our last cruise our son bought a spa gift certificate for my wife (his mother) and it was delivered to our stateroom on the date that he specified when he purchased it. It was of course a generic spa gift certificate not a purchase of a specific service.

  12. Wow - I think people need to take a chill pill. It is obvious that some cruisers have the wrong expectations for the Haven. Yes those suites are being advertised as family suites so you should expect family and that includes children. That being said common sense should prevail and just as the OP did the children should be under supervision and the crew should not be thought of as baby sitters. If you want daycare then enroll the children in the children's programs that are available. This should be true regardless of your stateroom class.

Our son has grown up and is long out of the house and both of us enjoy seeing children enjoying themselves. I think a cruise with no children wouldn't be as enjoyable but that is my opinion. But as they say it only takes a couple of bad apples to spoil the whole bunch and it is much easier and less confrontational to come down hard on everyone instead of the select few that were causing the problem. I have watched the NCL crew in action bending over backwards to accommodate some of the most foolish requests (yes one of my favorite pastimes is people watching). They are trained to try and defuse the situation.

cruisinsly - if the people in the Haven cannot be accepting of your son they are the ones that should be spoken to not you and your son. You would be welcomed by us in the Haven on our cruise. And yes the Haven in general will be a much quieter atmosphere than the pool deck if for no other reason than the shear number of people. But apparently not quiet enough for some:) Enjoy your cruise.

  13. If you consider day 1 to be the day you depart from New York then on our cruise last year on day 1 there were people using the hot tubs and on day 2 there were people using the pools. That was December 22nd and 23rd. By day 3 you are east of the Bahamas and enjoying summer like weather.

The route taken is normally way east of the East Coast to get into hopefully warmer and calmer water as quickly as possible and it is the straightest route to the Caribbean.
