  1. Very quick and easy check-in! Arrived at the pier around 11:15' date=' no line at security, and straight up the escalator to the suites check-in. We received our key cards and the first group was ready to be taken onboard by the concierge. We boarded the ship at 11:45.

He brought us up to the lounge outside Cagney’s, where we were offered champagne. We waited about 10 minutes (with a visit from the spa rep), and were shown in to a table for lunch.

We’re going to bring 12006 next December, would love to hear your impressions of your suite and treatment.

  2. I'll post a review later, just wanted to provide some impressions.

Food: LeBistro and Cagney's were excellent. Moderno was so-so. If you've eaten at Fogo de Chao or Chima, you'll probably be disappointed.

Dining rooms: often good with the occasional disappointment. Fried chicken was very disappointing. Prime rib and steak dishes were good to very good.

Buffet: not very good for the most part. Croissants and breakfast pastries were nice and the evening made to order crepes were delicious. Other dishes were poor.

Chef's Table: absolutely amazing. Easily the most elaborate meal I've ever eaten and the food was some of the most delicious I've ever had.

Cabin: Deluxe Owner's Suite: excellent suite, good condition mostly. Bed was amazingly comfortable.

Butler: Bagus. One of the best butlers we've ever had. Always happy to look after us even chiding the old battle axe when she went to get me breakfast saying he should be doing that. Always cheerful, pleasant to talk to and very thorough and helpful.

Ship: My mobility's a bit limited these days, so I didn't explore as much as I would have liked. My impression was it was well maintained and had some nice places to hang out. Biggest ship I've ever sailed on, and frankly, I prefer smaller.

We had a great cruise, with beautiful weather. I'd happily sail the Star again!

  3. We've done everything from lowest level inside to Owner's suites. Generally when we book a suite it's because we've found a good value. As others have noted, off season (when kids are in school), book as early as possible, and choose a less popular itinerary (transatlantic, repositioning). Since we like sea days, a transatlantic sounds good to us. Repositioning cruises are a bit of a challenge since you have to arrange flights from different destinations. Going with an older ship is often cheaper too.

When you put all of these things together, the values get pretty impressive. We booked a 14-day TA from Copenhagen to Miami in a deluxe owner's suite on the Star for what a spa suite in a 7-day Mediterranean cruise on a newer ship would cost. Airfare isn't going to be any worse for the repo cruise than round trip air to the Mediterranean would be.

Of course we could have cruised for a lot less by just booking a balcony or ocean view cabin, but we like to be spoiled every now and then. We don't get the Spa or Haven experience, but we get a huge, relatively new (the DOS's on the Star were only built in 2012) and all the high end suite perks. Since it's our first real vacation in three years and our 20th wedding anniversary, it makes a lot of sense.

Having said all that, we had fantastic vacations in the cheapest cabins too. When all is said and done, it's still a cruise, and it's still a great vacation.:)
