Notamermaid - Just wanted to say thanks again for all your help as we head for Paris tomorrow for a few days before our Moselle/Rhine cruise. Glad to see water levels have improved but hope it did not cause any problems for anyone traveling.
One last question? Is there still some color in foliage on the rivers or has most of it fallen?
Thanks again!!!!

Thank you Notamermaid!!!!
All very informative and appreciated!!!
-
Also is this mainly an issue with the larger Viking ships?
-
notamermaid from forecasts I see online it looks like there may be some rain in the Rhine region?
Also I assume are there certain sections of the Rhine impacted more than others by this problem?
As always, thanks for your help

Forgot to add that transfers to and from airport are included.

We are going on our 2nd Avalon Cruise in 10 days (first was Danube). On our first cruise we did not book our air through Avalon but for this one we did because of the great deal we got. Like you I was nervous about the flights but we have excellent flights on United with 1 layover of 2 hours each way and an early evening flight out and late morning flight returning.
Avalon exceeded our expectations on the first cruise but I was open to other cruise lines but the deal we got from Avalon was by far the best.

thanks parrothead my wife just asked me about the weather and I figured layering was the way to go.
-
Thank you that certainly helps.
Will hope for rain so portion on Rhine to Amsterdam is not impacted.
-
Is the Moselle also impacted by this?
I am leaving in 2 weeks on a Moselle/Rhine cruise.
Thanks, for all of your help!!!!!!

notamermaid, I am going on a Moselle/Rhine cruise on 10/26 in your opinion does it look like water levels could be a problem for this?
If so at what point do the companies make that decision?
Thanks

We did it on our own with another couple on our Avalon Danube cruise and it was pretty easy using metro and significantly cheaper. I also liked being able to go at our own pace and grab a drink and bite to eat there.

Thanks, we will probably give it a try at least once. Sounds sort of like a "Tasting" menu you might find on some menus.
Dinner was pretty good on our first Avalon cruise, a nice mix of regional cuisine and wine which I liked. This cruise is a wine cruise so I am hoping for more of the same.

Thanks Kenato appreciate response.

Has anyone tried the bistro dining?
Thanks

Has anyone tried the Bistro Dining option on Avalon? From what I can gather it looks like a tasting menu of regional dishes.
Thanks!

We are going on our 2nd cruise with Avalon next month. On the first we booked our own air and this time took advantage of 2 for 1 cruise with free air. Like you I was a bit nervous about flights and questioned TA we used who assured me they would be good fights which they are. We are booked on United both ways leaving in pm and arriving in early am with 2 hour layover. Have the reverse on return flight.
I priced same cruise through Avalon and found it to be significantly higher priced.

Great blog FuelScience!!!!!
Thanks again for all the great information and taking the time and effort. I will be canceling optional excursion to Zannse Schans and doing it on our own. We found doing on our own better on our last Avalon cruise and you confirmed this still holds true.
I feel much more prepared after reading your Blog thanks again!!!
One question regarding dining are tables for dinner for 6 (we have 6) like on last cruise we were on? Also did you try the Bistro dining and did they offer many local specialties?
Thanks!!!!

Cruisfan, we are on 10/25-11/3 cruise how about you?

That is great FuelScience!!!!! Thanks so much. We are going with 2 other couples at end of October and will pass this along.
Lots of half days was hoping for a little more time on your own but looks like a great trip. Ours should be slightly different because of wine festival perhaps a full day there.
You have been a wealth of knowledge it is much appreciated.
I assume you were satisfied with food, accommodations, tours overall from your blog.
Thanks!!!!

FuelScience - Thanks for Blog post hope you have time to finish. We are taking this cruise in October and really appreciate the info you have provided.

Thinking of booking a last second cruise on Vikings Tulip and Windmills trip. We did our first river cruise 2 years ago on Avalon of the Danube and loved it.
Any recommendations, tips, etc greatly appreciated!!!
We would get free air out of Pittsburgh with their promotion but I am a bit concerned that you do not get details till after you book (did my own air last time but missed connection - LOL). Especially since we do not have best connections out of PITT. Hopefully just go to NYC then direct.
Also any input on weather and if flowers in bloom appreciated.
Thanks

I assume all the ATMs have an English language option?
Thanks
The river Moselle infos and river cruising experiences

I also just returned from the Moselle after a Moselle/Rhine Wine Cruise with Avalon that included 3 days in Paris. I agree that the Moselle was by far the nicest river we have cruised on (Danube/Rhine others).
Little river traffic and just a continual view of vineyards and fall colors along with small towns and castles made this perfect.
At first I wondered why we had so much time dedicated to cruising the river but after seeing it I understand why.
I hope to post a full review soon.
