I don't know if it's still this way, but the airline a friend worked for had a dress code for employees flying on passes. They were always the best-dressed people on the plane.

I worked in the airline industry for a few years. Multiple times a year we would get 'buddy passes'. There was a strict dress code for anyone who used the pass. If I gave my passes to any friends, I would make it clear that they had to dress nice and if they didn't get on the flight to not make a scene. Many times friends or extended family to some employees would complain to gate agents about not getting a guaranteed seat and guess what? That employee's buddy passes were revoked and they weren't allowed to receive any in the future.

  2. I already know the hotel I'd be staying at and probably take taxi to/from the terminal. It's not in an area that would be unsafe for me to walk around. I appreciate all of these replies. I most likely would be a solo traveler so I'm very careful about where I venture out.

  3. Hello, I have a quick question. I'm looking at possibly doing the China/Japan cruise in March 2021. The itinerary has an overnight in Shanghai. Is it possible to spend that night off the ship? I'd be staying at a nearby hotel.

    thanks.

  4. I was interested in the Nov. 6th Eastern Caribbean cruise but found out that it's a theme cruise for Master Chef which I will not be participating in. Do the MC events interfere with the usual entertainment on board or are activities reduced? I'll be going solo and want to make sure it is worth the money. The itinerary is great for me but I still like the big productions shows in the evening.

    Thank you!

  5. Are you familiar with the new Fastpass+ system? Instead of issuing paper passes, rides are now reserved electronically onto your ticket. What I would do is once you get inside the park, locate a FP+ kiosk (it should show locations on the park map). You can check to see if any rides are available to be 'reserved'. This might help decrease some of your wait time at some of the rides.

Rides that don't have a single rider line will not usually sit 2 random people together but of course that's different for rides like Pirates that have rows instead of just 2 seats.

The new ride at Magic Kingdom is the Snow White themed Seven Dwarfs Mine Train. To me it's like a gentler version of Big Thunder Mountain Railroad. It's fun but if time is short, I wouldn't wait in a long line for it.

My favorites at MK are Splash Mountain, Big Thunder, Pirates and Buzz Lightyear. I also really like the show Monster's Inc. Laugh Floor. Also PeopleMover is one of my favorites to just relax and take in the sights. They no longer have that ride at Disneyland which I go to frequently so I always like to ride that.

Darn, now you have me wanting to go to WDW instead of my upcoming cruise! Nah, jk. I still want to cruise. ;)

    Have a great time!

  6. Newbcruiser, I have not done WDW with a cruise excursion but I have done a week at WDW solo. Absolutely do it! Even solo I had a fantastic time and the freedom to do whatever I wished without having to consult with someone else was so great. I also talked to tons of people and employees while waiting in lines or shows so I was never truly alone. ;)

  7. Primary reason is that the POA is the only (that I know of) Ocean going passenger vessel of American registry. Accordingly, I believe it must meet US wage laws, including social security.

    Ah. That makes sense.

Check the June sailings. Sometimes they have low prices.

Thank you for this! I thought since summer was high season the fares would be at their peak so I was checking in the fall. It's still pricey but definitely more manageable.

  8. As of now I have a Pacific Coastal cruise booked in September on the NCL Jewel to sort of get my feet wet with solo cruising. It's not my ideal cruise as I've already been to Vancouver/Victoria a couple of times but I just can't do Florida as I'm not a beach person. I thought about doing Hawaii for a week (culture/history) but would love to do a studio on the NCL POA. But the cost is around $2800!! Why?

  9. Of course, but that isn't the choice here. It's between forward/low or mid/higher.

I am more sensitive to rolling (side-to-side) motion than to pitching (up-down), so if I had to choose between mid-ship deck 6 or Main forward I would choose the latter. However, you may be more sensitive to up-down motion. Does a fast elevator start-stop bother you? Or is a car on a very winding road worse?

    .

I didn't even consider this...I'm still new at cruising and despite my brief bout of motion sickness on my first cruise it's not keeping me from doing another one since I had so much fun. I definitely get more sick with the rolling so the main deck cabin sounds like it would be better.

  10. I'm entertaining the thought of going on a Caribbean cruise on the Westerdam the last week of October. Through an online travel site my options for cabins are J category on the Main Deck (1) but close to the bow of the ship or I category which is more in the middle but on the Upper Verandah deck (6). For someone that is prone to motion sickness which would be better? Does it even matter?

I'm totally fine with having an inside cabin.

    TIA! ;)

  11. Oh good, I'm not the only one that stays home on Valentine's Day! ;)

I'm looking into booking a solo cruise for my birthday next year which is February 13th. I'm leaning more towards anything that disembarks on the Saturday after as I'd rather be at an airport/flying home then stuck on a sea day with a bunch of kissy-kissy couples.

  12. Hello everyone! Need some advice here. I went on my first cruise (Alaska) last year and loved it and want to book a cruise for the Caribbean in February. The first cruise was on HAL and I was with my mom who is retired and so the abundance of passengers around her age wasn't really an issue. I loved HAL but I'm worried that if I book my solo cruise with them for the Caribbean that I'll be among an older crowd. I'm 38. I don't drink, gamble or into the party scene. I prefer a more laid back atmosphere so I'm reluctant to book Carnival. I want a ship that has great entertainment with shows and high quality food. I don't do buffets.

Can anyone suggest the best cruise line that might entail all this with more people around my age? ;)
