  1. Just returned from Transatlantic back to back on QM2.

Transfer to Macys leaves Redhook at 0730 arrives at Macys 0810 approx. Return from Macys 1430.

Cost $49 per person. Book at the tour office on Deck 2 anytime on the outward voyage probably better to do so early.

Plenty of light on sheltered cabin we had one on Deck 6 - very nice.

  2. For all those who were kind enough to help us by contributing to this thread, many thanks; we are now back from our QM2 voyage and had a fantastic day in NYC.

Cunard did lay on a transfer bus it cost $49 each and left Redhook at 0730 - it dropped us in East 34th street just near Macys at around 0810. The rest of the day we walked it. We made our way up 7th avenue through times square then across to 6th avenue via a nice Starbucks then up to 59th st where we met our horse drawn carriage and had a fantastic tour around Central Park. Then back down 5th Avenue via a lunch stop, the beautiful St Patricks cathedral and countless shops back to Macys which had a sale on and where we got some very nice household stuff, clothing and shoes. Look at the watch 1400hrs time for the bus back to the ship. Sore feet but a lovely day.

  3. I have been recommended to this site and specifically to 138east who I am told is the font of all knowledge about getting around NYC.

My wife and I arrive on the QM2 at Red Hook on 20 Oct our intention is to get the NY Ferry from Red Hook to pier 11 wall street then get a taxi from there to Plaza Hotel where we have a horsedrawn carriage tour of central park booked.

We then intend to walk back down 5th avenue shopping ending up at Macys (more shopping) then taxi back to pier 11 and ferry back to Red Hook to rejoin QM2.

Is this a sensible plan? ant alternatives welcome.

  4. gents

thank you all for your very helpful responses - transatlantic fan - the shuttle bus option is very attractive to us and we are going to have a good look at it.

frankp01/post captain - I really like the ferry option however I gather it lands us at Pier 11 which (according to Google maps) is about 9 miles from Central Park where we are going for 10am. Would we be able to get a taxi from pier 11 if we went this route?

  5. Thank you for your responses -

Blue Riband - awesome video thanks. Yes in NYC on 20 Oct. I realise the ship docks in Brooklyn and not Manhattan; incidentally the last time we did this round trip in Nov 12, the ship DID dock in Manhattan because of storm damage to Redhook. We went on an organised coach tour that day which we didn't enjoy too much hence why we have organised our own itinerary this time.

We are doing a skyline tour from pier 78 in the morning hence my question about how to get from Redhook to pier 78 then after lunch we are doing a horsedrawn carriage tour of Central Park - the company doing that have advised us to go by taxi from pier 78 to plaza hotel central park. Then after that we plan to walk from the drop off point at the Plaza Hotel down to Macys which my wife in particular wants to visit. Then taxi back to Redhook.

Does anyone have any better suggestions as to how we can travel between Redhook to pier 78 then pier 78 to plaza hotel central park then to Macys then back to Redhook.

  6. My wife and I re travelling on the QM2 round trip voyage 13-27 October. We have done this trip before but what we have not done is strike out under own steam which we plan to do this time. Can anyone give us some pointers on the following:

    1. What time will we be able to disembark

    2. Can we get a taxi from the terminal - we are going to Pier 78

    3. What time do we need to be back on QM2 and what are the logistics of re-embarking.

    Thanks

    Mike and Lyn
