Thank you all for your insight. While we are not country club folk, we do appreciate the um..refinement and manners generally found in HAL. Our last cruise, we noticed quite a few older people talking down to the crew and were appalled. We hope not to run into that again , ever. I think you can tell a lot about a person by the way they treat subordinates..bank tellers..checkout personnel and wait staff.
I think we try Carnival with all the advise given on mind. If we encounter behavior as noted above on larger measure, we will likely not cruise again with them
We have looked at Seabourn and could , with planning , do one of their cruises but for that money, we could go twice on another not as luxurious line. I doubt I have the clothes or the jewels to fit in anyway..lol
Thank you again

You might want to check out Celebrity. They are wonderful. Beautiful ships, great food, service second to none. Thier demigrafic is middle age mid to high income. Their prices are in line with Holland America. But are more inclusive.
Try Carnival and if they don't suit try Celebrity. Good luck and come back to this thread and let us know how it goes.

Good Morning! We are pretty new to cruising, having only been 3 times. All 3 times have been HAL
Now that we are retired and not wealthy..lol..I am looking at other cruise lines. I will admit we have turned our noses up at Carnival..Too many kids and if it's less expensive, it can't be as "nice", right?
But doing some research and reading, I am finding that it does seem to be as "nice", the suite rooms look pretty good and there are places on the ship that are adults only, so will not be over run with kids. (Of course, we like kids but we always seem to always wind up with kids that other parents are ignoring).Folks say the food is good and there are soooo many choices and the entertainment is decent.
Anyway, I was wondering if any HAL cruisers have experience with Carnival. Thinking of booking a short cruise to see if we like it.
Love Carnival! For the price it is an amazing value. I am not a fan of the new American table. I would much rather have the table cloths. They do have table cloths on the elegant nights. They have also gone to only making up your room once per day unless you request twice. You also have to request the bathrobes if you want them. There is no charge for them but you need to ask for them. These are new changes.
The entertainment is very good. Service is usually great. I would definitely stay away from the shorter cruises. They are booze cruises and very roudy. 5 day at a minimum. You can usually find a 7 day for close to the 5 day rate so really check different dates. If you like to gamble you can get Carnival rates on HAL through the casino. You can also get free cruise from Carnival. You don't have to gamble a lot either. I am going on a 7 day Hal cruise in April For 129. Plus taxes. I only do slots.

The regular Hotel Director must be on his leave. When he is there things are ship shape

I love Carnival! My platinum cruise was on the Spirit in SEPT 2012. Last cruise was the 17 day South America on the Splendor. Next cruise is the NYC to Tampa, 11day Southern Caribbean Oct 10 2013. The rates are so cheap and so is the Carnival airfare. You should all join us! Lol

Carnival just refunded all pre purchased wifi packages. The internet is going to be really sketchy and probably non existent during the multiple sea days. They will make it avail at the pre cruise daily rate when it is working.
