  1. Am considering a 14-day on the Star in 2019 around Cape Horn that would encompass Christmas & New Years. Our kids will be 20 and 16, so not youngsters, but we are a “Christmas family” and do enjoy the season and traditions. We’ve cruised over the holidays before but that was on Disney so I’m wondering what it’s like on board an NCL ship on those days? Decorations? New Years party? We’re definitely going for the trip and ports but just curious what kind of atmosphere to expect when I sell the trip to the family!

We sailed on the Pearl on an 11 day holiday cruise and loved it so much we're doing it again. Lots of decorations caroling Santa...etc. New Year 's Eve was awesome with events and performers in every venue. They had a DJ on the pool deck and it was awesome seeing all the families, even the young kiddos, out dancing at midnight. We can't wait for our holiday cruise on the Jade this year!

  2. Hello to all.

We fly into Orlando (first time) and want a taxi to an Orlando downtown hotel. Hotel has no shuttle.

Then next day we want transport from Orlando hotel to Miami hotel.

I've read lots of reports about the "problems" people encounter. I'm sure some cruisers have done this many times. So your experience and ideas are really welcome.

    Thanks.

If I were doing it, I would do a one way car rental from the Orlando airport to the Miami airport, then use the agency's shuttle to get tobthe ship (assuming you are sailing the same say). It's over three hours by car from Orlando to Miami.

  3. As a platinum member do you have a priority walk off or do you just get in line with the rest of those who do the walk off?

You walk off with everyone else for the carry your own luggage option. You do get priority tags and disembark ahead of most other groups if you want to let the ship handle your luggage.

  4. Can someone that has been to HC recently answer whether or not you can use your keycard for purchases at any of the bars? I know that the UBP is not in play on HC and you have to purchase anything on the island. We were there last March and I know there are several vendors, mainly away from the pool area and more in the shopping area that sell various things that have to be purchased with cash or credit card. But I definitely got the impression that keycards were taken for drink purchases at the bars around the pool area. I have seen conflicting answers regarding this and just wanted to see if anyone knew for sure.

We were there back in November 2016 and were able to USA our key card at all bars and a restaurant.

  5. Hi, I'll be visiting Harvest Caye, Belize, in a few weeks (Jan 25th). From what I can tell, many things there still seem to be a bit half-baked. No excursion for snorkeling at HC is listed for our cruise. Can anyone tell me if it would be possible to snorkel there on our own just by swimming out from the island? If so, I guess I'd want to also know if the snorkeling is any good. Lastly, since this is likely to be a limited number of responses, anything else you recommend while there? If they are too restrictive or nothing to see right at the island, is there any chance there is the option to find someone to take us out once we land on the island?

I like to explore "real" things a lot more than hanging around a carefully created island.

I tried to assess the situation using Google Earth but the photo is too old.

    Thanks!

We've been to HC, and others with gear reported no snorkeling worth doing. We assumed that would be the case and left our gear on the ship. Also no independent transportation to mainland or any other location.

Very disappointing to be in Belize and have no diving or snorkeling options.

They are building a platform called the Ocean Explorer out over a reef somewhere, but it wasn't ready for our cruise (Early Dec 2016) so all excursions related to it were canceled.

I assume the same is true for you if you are not seeing snorkeling excursions for your dates.

Nice beach. Nice pool. Drinks and food extra and can be charged to your ship account

    Hope this helps.

  6. You have to go up one flight on the Getaway

There is no elevator to that floor

There is a chairlift on the exterior stairs to assist handicapped but I never saw it in use

We were on the Getaway this week. The other poster may be thinking of the Escape which does have one elevator car that goes to that deck. Not on the Getaway.

  7. We are scheduled for Harvest Caye on December 14th and someone in our group received an email from NCL today canceling their excursion. Their email said the snorkeling, the sea trek & the reef ranger all were no longer available. I wonder why these are being cancelled?

We're on the November 27 sailing and just got the same email. All of those excursions depart from a platform called the Ocean Explorer. The email says that that platform will not be ready.

It also mentioned other excursions still available, so hopefully we'll still get to make the stop.

  8. Add my vote for Columbia in Ybor city. I make it a point to go there every time I'm in the area and have never been disappointed. The setting service and food are awesome.

  9. If you call guest services they will have whatever bottle and mixers you'd like waiting in your room....for a charge of course. Its been a while since I did it but I seem to remember paying in the $70 range for a liter of Makers Mark.

Never tried to do it once onboard. If you do make sure that you wait until you're in international water and they stop charging the port sales tax.

  10. I was on the Star in 2011, no dedicated cigar bar then. They did have "Cigars Under the Stars" every night at the highest outdoor bar and had a limited cigar selection. It was fairly well attended by a regular group

  11. If you go to the US CDC website and start searching for recommended vaccinations for popular Caribbean ports, you will see a typhoid and Hep A on just about every listing including St. Thomas.
