I always thought I wanted an aft cabin until we got one on Crown Princess.  It was on Deck 12, and we felt every single “bump” in the ocean.  I did not sleep one night out of seven!  The aft view was amazing but not worth all the movement for me.

Sometimes it's dependent on the individual ship as to how much you feel. We've been on a couple different RCCL vessels in a corner aft, one we hardly felt motion, the other we felt a lot and heard a lot of creaks (ship was due for a refurb a month after our cruise, so not surprising).

Less superstructure in the view on deck 10.

Bob is right, less superstructure higher up. Here is a video someone made of the deck 7 corner aft on Liberty, the view would be the same on Explorer. We've had this stateroom on Freedom twice and after a few minutes on the balcony we hardly notice the superstructure, but for some it might be an issue. This will give you an idea what to expect. We've never had deck 10 aft and I can't speak to that, but have had 7408 (corner aft deck 7) on Freedom. We enjoyed it so much the first time that we booked the same week and stateroom for the following year. Twice we've had it, twice we've been thrilled. The view is great, you really don't notice the superstructure after awhile, and the large porthole on the side is also a great view. The balcony is probably 12ft x 15ft (guessing), it really is huge. There are two chairs, a small table and two loungers on the balcony. It really is the most private balcony on the entire ship. You may not get as much sun as you'd get on deck 10, but that's ok with us. We spent a lot of relaxing time out there reading, playing cards, just laying in the loungers. Great place to have your morning coffee. I would, however, suggest bringing a couple of small battery powered fans, the aft balconies sometimes don't get a breeze, the fans help. Someone else posted on here about hanging their hammock on the balcony of 7408, we might try that next time. We are booked for the same deck 7 corner aft on the Explorer of the Seas for a cruise next year, can't wait. To give you an idea of the size of the porthole...here is a shot taken in Labadee, Haiti. It's probably 7 or 8ft in diameter. I am 6ft tall and when I stand in front of it the top is almost two feet above the top of my head. 7408porthole.jpg

  4. Question for all those aft junkies!

I have Explorer 7388 booked and have stayed in that cabin before. I can have D1, 1690, as it is open. I love the balcony on 7388.

    Which did you like better?

We've booked 7388 on Explorer for a 9 day southern Caribbean itinerary next year. We've had 7408 on Freedom the last two cruises, which is the same stateroom and the balcony is absolutely the best on the ship IMHO.

  5. Corner aft cabin # 7688 on the Explorer. Just came off the ship on Sunday Dec. 22. I loved this cabin and the large balcony. I even put up battery operated Christmas lights on the porthole of the balcony.

We've booked 7388 on Explorer (same stateroom, starboard side) for a 9 day southern Caribbean cruise out of Port Canaveral Feb 2015. We've had 7408 on Freedom of the Seas the last two cruises and LOVED it. The large balcony is perfect for us! Over a year away, but already excited. :)

  6. Hi Steve,

You'll love that corner aft even more with a hammock!:D (My only regret is that the hammock didn't have a built in Kindle holder and drink holder.) Buz bought the hammock on Amazon - about $20 and the name of it was La Paz something. It's woven cotton as he didn't want nylon or poly (too sweaty.) He also bought a hammock hanging kit at Academy for about $15 that supplied the ropes.

He's tall enough (6'1") that he was able to just kind of toss the ropes through the holes in the beams you see below. He didn't have to stand on a chair to reach the openings, but that could be done. (But use the sturdy one from inside the cabin!) This was 7388 on Navigator, but I think that Voyager class and Freedom class ships have the same structure on the aft, so it should be pretty similar on Freedom.

If you need more info, he'd be delighted to advise you (he's quite proud of his hammock installation!;)) you can email him at goodrich@telepath.com. (He's upstairs mudding sheetrock in our soon-to-be-redone guest bathroom right now, so I've been instructed not to interrupt him.)

Excellent! Thank you so much for the information!

  7. Pic below is DH enjoying the balcony on Navigator 7388 (deck 7 corner aft....essentially the same as Freedom class 7408 and 7708.)

On Voyager class ships, these balconies are 7388 and 7688.

P.S. He can give you instructions on how to hang your hammock.:D

We just love the corner balcony stateroom... just returned from FOS Western Caribbean in 7408. Can you please send instructions on how you mounted the hammock? I'd like to try that next time.

    Thanks,

    Steve

  8. I hope you will be able to get one, good luck. He finished at Paris Island in March of this year. He is now stationed at Camp LeJeune.

We ended up getting a hill top cabana on Barefoot Beach. Took your advice and went straight to customer service when we got on board. All of the ones at Nellie's Beach were taken, but they were taking names for a waiting list for the cabanas on Barefoot Beach in the event they did not all go to the Suites guests. We got lucky, and my wife loved it. Worth every penny.

Also, regarding the corner aft balcony....OMG... we LOVED it! So much that we re-booked the same trip for next year in the same cabin. We did have an issue on the last day at sea when the crew fired up what I assume is an emergency diesel generator down below and we ended up engulfed in thick black smoke as we ran from the balcony into the stateroom... I think it might be good for them to warn people before firing that up... but didn't let it ruin our vacation and we'll obviously be in the same cabin again...if it happens again, we'll move inside the instant we hear it start up, before the smoke starts. :-)

My son also went to LeJeune after boot camp, he was there for almost 5 years until he re-enlisted and changed jobs. Semper Fidelis.

  9. You know, anyone can rent a cabana at Nellies Beach on Labadee under your reservation on the RC website. ;) My son is a new Marine. He went to Boot Camp last December.

@ CruiseLover15 - Thanks, I've been checking the shore excursion reservation section for Labadee for the last month when I first heard about the cabanas, but it always says "Inquire Onboard" instead of "Reserve Now". I'm going to keep checking daily between now and our departure date of 9/30 in case it opens up. I may just have to head right to the excursion desk when I get on board, I'll also look into getting put on the waiting list for the Barefoot Beach Club cabanas in case there are any left after the suite guests have their chance to get them. CONGRATULATIONS on the new Marine! Semper Fidelis! Parris Island or San Diego? My son has been in for 6 years.

  10.

@ Spicester, all I can say is "WOW!" Great pics! I can't wait to get onboard. No long flights for us... 45 minute drive to the port, park the car and board. Your pics of the Med are great!

  11. Wow, you got lucky. Enjoy!!!!

Thanks! You are right, we got lucky. I didn't even think about an aft balcony until I started poking around a few months ago. After seeing all of the good things people were saying about the experience, decided to try and change to aft, none were available though. Checked about a week ago and 6710 and 8412 were available, based on reviews we switched from our side balcony to 8412. On a whim, I checked yesterday and 7408 had become available and we grabbed it, so timing is everything. Now I just need to score a cabana on Labadee for our anniversary to surprise my wife and I'll be "good-ta-go" as my Marine son always says.

  12. You will love 7408 on FOS, we have been in that room 3 times!!! Next time in march!! Can't wait! Enjoy!!!!!

Thanks! I didn't even know about this unique stateroom until I started poking around the last few months and found the reviews. It sounds perfect. This will be our first time in an aft cabin, I hear you either like it or you don't. I think we will.
