  1. Re: marketing to millennials....On our just ended Mariner cruise most of the evening music [Horizon]

was from the 60's and 70's. There was a pianist in both the Mariner & Observation. Live music ended by 11:30pm. Thereafter there was only a jukebox.....so their marketing strategy for the millennials in escaping me!

'Paula' my better half has just been asking me / hoping that there is some sort of lively bar on board Mariner for late night music and the odd stumble around a dance floor and to be honest 60s and 70s suits me fine.

Any tips would be most gratefully accepted.

We've sailed on silverseas 4 times and found the late night bar fine until about 11 when invariably a 'dj' would take over and completely empty the place with tuneless noise, which I always thought was a cynical ploy.

Trying Regent for the first time Tuesday next as we've been told by several friends met along the way that it is more laid back, which very much suits me with a slightly younger demographic [says me at 63].

Back to my point, any places better or worse for a pair of retired duffers looking for a relaxed easy cruise on Mariner?

    Thanks in advance :)

  2. Maybe it's a 'girl thing' 😀 I love taking the opportunity to dress up and my beloved will follow the dress code by wearing an open neck shirt and a pair of suit type pants and a tie if he must although I do love him in a dinner suit / tux - very James Bond!! He spends his working life in a suit and tie and whines about us girls going round in our floaty blouses 😁 so forcing him into a suit and tie every night whilst on holiday would be cruel.

Fashions have changed though and what is acceptable for the theatre or a nice restaurant on land is also changing. What am I going to do with my long dresses if I can't wear them on my cruise

You go ahead and wear them.

And good on your beloved too.

This was only an observation on my recent silversea trip but the ladies wearing pantsuits, all 2 of them, looked rather dated and a bit out of place. Just my opinion, as if I have a clue on fashions.

Also, just my opinion, ladies generally look good in whatever they wear :)

  3. I asked a simple question about dress codes and it has started a S### storm. Look, before I get off this horse let me say my wife and I have no desire to dress and act like Mr. And Mrs. Thurston Howell III from Gilligan's Island because I'm on a Regent cruise. I get that it is an upper class, first cabin cruise and not a party Love Boat outfit. That is why I booked a Penthouse. But what I and others were simply making a point, "dress jeans" that we speak of are not faded Levis, they are not rock star jeans with custom holes in the knees. They are very expensive, soft, custom tailored denim material that make Dockers look like gym shorts, sweat pants, etc. others refer to. I have a dozen of them in my closet and they cost around $200 a pair. Those pants with a nice collard shirt and (optional) blazer, I guarantee you would put anyone with Dockers and a Polo shirt in a different game. But Geez, the comments made to "leave your jeans at home, this is a Regent cruise," etc, is a bit over the top. To paraphrase what someone just posted, "If I were to judge Regent based on these posts, I'd be turned off." Sheesh, I will go buy a $50 pair of Dockers so I can dress for success and "fit in" with the elites who think that is dressing up. But I am also going to bring a couple pair of my dreaded "dress jeans," and if they are allowed, I'm going to wear them. You can't miss me, I'll be the tall and handsome lad wearing a beautiful and COMFORTABLE pair of dark blue or black denims, a white collard shirt and blue blazer sipping a Grey Goose martini, feeling good, looking good and enjoying myself with my beautiful wife, having a blast with my best friend and her boyfriend, Living Life Large. I won't be calling my wife "Lovey" and she won't be calling me "Poopsy." So let's move on, we are all going to have a great time, a great cruise a great experience. Drinks are on me.
RachelG… why couldn't your son wear a sport coat over his khakis and shirt? That would have been much more appropriate. Khakis are khakis…no matter what the brand or the cost. No matter what age every man or boy should own a sport coat and a pair of dress

    pants.

    Oh my lord.........

I've had this on each of the 3 times I've sailed on Silverseas.

L-L-L you go and have the time of your life, on S-S I've asked and all who knew said Regent was MUCH better with it's dress code of casual smart and I will definitely be booking my next cruise with them

The vast majority of folks sailing with you are fun, interesting and casual people on 'holiday'.

You get, just like on this board, some folks still living in their own bubble of cruising first class just after the Korean war, who probably fought in it so that young [63] whipper snappers like me can drag the world down to the level of 'SLOBS' which by all accounts wearing a polo shirt makes me according to MrStanley.

MrStanley, oh to travel with him, surely he is on this board for the entertainment factor.

In England we have a young mans comic called Viz and reading his posts I can't help thinking of the character 'Major Misunderstanding'. :)

  4. I guess recreating the tale of the "emperor's new clothes" in the MDR on Toga night wouldn't go over so well...

    :)

    Emperors new clothes........?

I'm tempted to start a fund up now, all donations gratefully accepted. 'The Fund For Billy to Keep ANY clothing on in the MDR'. Jeans, cut down shorts, baseball cap on backwards or sideways, hoodie. Anything but not bare all fund.

I need to work on a more catchy acronym friendly name for this fund..!!

    :)

  5. WHAT!!!!

there were pax in denim in the MDR!!!

    YIKES.

i thought that was not permitted except on the last night of the cruise when everyone had packed, and one did see some denim in the MDR....

    OH WELL.

Yes Spin it would seem so and playing wild music by degenerate bands like the Beatles and The Beach Boys. Anyone might think this wasn't the 1950s.

I apologise to the person who started this positive thread to let people know some of us from every level of society think SS is great and stupidly making a vague mention of attire.

Let me state now, I personally do not like Jeans at evening meals or any meals for that matter on SSs but for some people now, myself included, in normal day to day life that is what they wear and I would defend their right to wear them if that is what they want.

That is why when I posted above I wondered why SS might not have a 'smart' casual bar for those at night who don't want to dress in tails and ball gowns.

You've paid for your cruise, I think it's a disgrace they don't and I find it condescending if not rude when other posters suggest going on Carnival if that is what I want.

Although outwardly you would be hard pushed to know it, I survived a major life threatening crash 10 yrs ago and had to retire totally hence my time available to cruise or holiday this was against what I wanted to do which was carrying on my career due to my health and ability to function [i only mean dress and walk distances etc not bodily functions] without the aid of my lovely partner and for those who dont know its a lot easier for me and for my partner for me to dress in casual clothing. It's not an insult to other passengers who I again say I love to see dressed up, it's in my case necessity.

I don't get it where people go on about dress codes as if this was North Korea-On-Sea.

I 100% agree that SS is special and people in general go on the line for the 'upmarket' experience. But that should not mean draconian codes of dress. I would also argue it's a cost saving excercise that SS doesn't have formal meal sittings every night for those who want them, not a choice for the passengers.

As for someone above mentioning another group or person who mentioned loudly 'Look at her' as wrong as that was and completely unforgivable I would hazard a guess that the statement 'Look at that whoever' would have been made by a passenger a lot more often if the other pasenger(s) were not in full uniform of Dinner jaket and dickie bow tie. Just as wrong.

Anyway as always I digress and want to turn this thread back to the original context.

    I LIKE SILVERSEAS.

ps I'm going to try and be a clever dick now and add pics, none of me I'm as round as I am tall :)

  6. The posts here and elsethread give me pause. Jim and I, regardless of venue (unless we're dining al fresco), intend to wear what we wear to the opera and symphony in San Francisco:

Jim -- navy blue blazer, dress shirt, linen or cotton twill trousers, tie, decent shoes

Kat -- linen slacks, silk or linen shell, fancy jacket or shawl, flats on my feet (must be steady at sea).

    Typical laid back Californians.

  7. Woohoo,

I gave up on this site because all I ever read was whining about how SS had gone down market and gone 'the seabourn way'. The vociferous few complaining that soon jeans will be obligatory at all meals who wouldnt listen to my opinion that I loved to see folks dressed up and looking fine and would not want to spoil there valid enjoyment but as that was not my particular fancy surely it was possible for an evening bar on board to be 'smart casual'.

    OOPS I'm digressing.

I've only sailed twice with Silverseas and yes I could mention 3 things that at the time made me a little fractious but I much more remember the many many many good times and great people I've met.

Yes of course some people are not going to want to talk to me with my cockney accent and 2 small tattoos which I presumed marked me down as a wrong 'un but in 98% of the case I have found fellow travellers amusing and interesting in equal amounts.

After my last small 'bad MOMENT' which was a problem for my partner not me we decided to try Seadream which I can also highly reccomend.

But we knew we had in the main had great times with SS and so relented and have returned to sail again in March 2016 on Spirit.

I tentatively checked CC to see if the usual vocal minority were still on ranting only to notice this thread.

I've not looked at any other thread and I wont as this has got me looking forward to our cruise even more.

Big shout for whoever started this thread. :)

  8. It would seem that Silversea does not regard loyalty and repeat business from returning customers as a priority. The majority of corporate group guests are unlikely to use such a luxury line again if they have to pay their own fare. Independent guests who have had the misfortune to experience the impact of some of these groups will not wish to put themselves in such a position again. So what is Silversea’s target market? Have they decided that corporate events are the most lucrative? Do they discount heavily to attract this business? Are independent passengers going to find themselves in the minority? Is Silversea going to be my preferred luxury cruise line? ……… Just wondering………….

Well after my last cruise one thing is certain, they wont be my preferred choice.

    Seabourne here I come.

  9. First off, let me be clear that I don't like dress codes. I think if people want to dress up, than they should be able to and look beautiful and if not....so be it.

Seabourn and Regent Country club casual is starting to look good.....

    Safe travels to all!

Getting back to the original thoughts.

If only everyone had your attitude and contrary to the small vocal group on here I think most do have that attitude.

I sailed early this year on Spirit which did have a group of car sales folks and I never once felt they were being given any sort of preferential treatment. Quite the contrary to be fair, I felt the staff tended to look after myself and my partner a lot more attentively than the group members.

The only night it didn't work for me was the BBQ night which seemed to me a bit of a Carnival Line set up. I'm not into queuing for off cuts that are cold by the time you sit down.

As to the dreaded dress code, not one single person mentioned it and I personally did not wear a jacket or tie on any night although I never ate in the restaurants choosing every night to dine Hot Rocks under the stars.

Plenty of people did dress each night and looked fantastic.

I visited all the bars and the Gambling den and not a single person be they cruiser or staff ever mentioned dress codes.

Anyways we set sail this Friday and I am bringing my step daughter [26] and her partner [32] who are dressing up every night and bouncing off the walls with excitement.

When you're that age and that fit it's great to look like James Bond and his latest squeeze, I on the other hand have the physique of Danny DeVito and will as per my last cruise be casual every night everywhere. Worse still I've persuaded 2 good friends to come along as well who are Geordies and like to enjoy life. The least said about my partner the better, she had a job as a cleaner when I first met her so you can just imagine.

Thinking about it, does that make us a mini group and mean I can wander around in my vest and slippers with my hankie head cover on all day long?

There should be a lot more love and peace in the world and less dogma.

Feel the love people xxx
