I said "might" be the reason. There are obviously times when cabins such as suites are completely booked, so that being the case, a person in a balcony could not possibly be upgraded to a suite. It's just a hypothesis. I've seen them raffle off ( in bingo) empty suites as well.

Booked Colors of Provence (May 2018) on AMACello last night. Northbound itinerary. Comments from cruisers who have done this cruise appreciated.

Thanks for comments thus far. We put up a deposit on the May 10th, Arles to Lyon cruise on AMACello last night. Taking a Norwegian Star Transatlantic, Miami to Barcelona to get there.

We did this itinerary on Amadagio in 2014 and it is among our very favorites. Loved the ports, the wine, the accessibility of the towns to where we were docked.
AMA is our favorite line overall and, even though this cruise was on their oldest vessel at the time, it did not disappoint. Crew and staff were superb, as was our CM.
WOW!!! Your cruise history is one made of dreams! Very impressive!

As I get closer to cruise day, I find the anticipation so unnerving that all I want to do is watch cruise videos on YouTube for the ship we are going on. Watching them also lets me feel like I'm right there with them!
Hadn't thought of doing this!!! Thanks!

I'm constantly planning for bucket-list cruises now that we have set Spring 2018 as retirement for both of us.

Would love to hear from past cruisers on AMA but specifically on Cello for this itinerary that we are about to put a deposit on, Arles to Lyon.
Topics of interest are pros/cons of 3 night add ons for Barcelona and Paris, what expenses aren't included, weather experiences for mid-May, cabin type advice, and anything else of a general nature. First time river cruisers and we will be taking a transatlantic over and flying back. Thanking all in advance!

Yes, I even get exciting about our routine cruises into Caribbean out of Galveston. But for those special cruises that are a ways off, I'm super excited. Alaska Southbound and pre-cruise land tour July 2017.

You get what you pay for or what you want. The cruising market is extremely competitive. About 21 of my 24 cruises have been on Royal Caribbean. It's very hard for me to find competitive prices on other lines now, obviously because of my Diamond Plus status/discounts. BUT, I remember comparing Carnival to RCCL years ago and couldn't find a Carnival cruise on same date for same itinerary out of the same port for a lower price. Years have passed, so maybe that data point is irrelevant now, but you always have the option of booking with someone else. We really like RCCL, we once sailed on NCL (Jewel) out of N.O. because they ran a sale on a penthouse suite if you booked more than 9 months out and we did. Didn't much care for that cruise. Seemed inferior to RCCL to us. May have been an outlier/one off thing. We have our first Carnival cruise coming up 3/12/17, Fascination out of San Juan, because it was a freebie from a land-based casino. So everyone knows how this works. Prices go up and down based on supply and demand. We feel comfortable sailing on RCCL and Holland America, but often compare prices. I was just on the phone w/ HAL yesterday. We have never received an upgrade on RCCL so that mean they sail booked and I can see how they manage to do that. I got a special cruise rate flyer in the mail from Holland america Friday and called them w/in hours. All those cabins were now filled. I have heard that Disney Cruises are expensive but I've also heard they are really good cruises. Never heard anyone say Disney is gouging them or start focusing on their bottom line/profit margin in a cruise forum. Don't like RCCL, don't book with them.

Let's add up everything I have spent on RCCL tab for 21+ cruises and compare that to the cost of a first-time cruiser in a suite for a week. No contest! The loyalty program is what it is. A person in a suite may never cruise w/ RCCL again, yet they not only get the suite, they get all of that stuff you mentioned X3. I am a RCCL stockholder, but if I see an issue, I reserve the right to say how it makes me feel. I use a few of the percs you mention but remember it took me 4 years to gain access to most of them!!

One reason that people don't get upgraded might be that the ship is sailing full! Can't move you to a cabin that's already occupied.

Now Diamond Plus after 4 years of cruising Royal Caribbean. 21 or so cruises. Never been offered an upgrade. We like RCCL, but we've only cruised NCL once and HAL twice. Going out on a Liberty cruise on 2/5. There wasn't any fanfare when we turned Diamond Plus. Seems like RCCL is missing a great opportunity to make their most loyal customers feel appreciated. We got a couple of luggage tags in the mail. It sticks in my craw more than just a little bit that a person in a suite who is cruising RCCL is treated better than we are. Hope someone w/ RCCL is listening.

Try the NCL ships w/ studio cabins for one if they have a port u can access.

Check out polarcruises.com or better yet call them. 888-919-9098, not your conventional cruise line.

Royal Caribbean has two that begin in Copenhagen and come back to U.S. 15 nights back to Boston and 16 nights back to Cape Liberty, NJ.

Probably varies from cruise line to cruise line but all the ones I've seen are about the size of a cc it a Texas driver's license.

Great info for solo cruisers. Is it hard to book unless you book well in advance?

Make sure to take advantage of all the activities on board, especially the evening shows if they have them. Be social when u can. We always meet really nice people on our cruises which for the most part are Royal Caribbean . Save space for stuff you might want to bring home. [emoji924]

I'm not on any specific board. I'm just seeing "trending" posts on cruise critic, therefore my misunderstanding. Didn't know this was specific to a cruise line board.

If it's a RCCL excursion they won't leave you. The excursion operator will notify the ship if running late. You should be good to go if you want to be out that long.

Thanks, my cardiologist did a Viking river cruise and loved it but I do hear the occasional comment that they don't meet the same levels as AMA, uni-world, and Tauck. I hear this from travel professionals.

Update of Diamond & Diamond + Perks???

Yes, we have been offered a tour on every cruise since turning D+. Might depend on length of cruise and other ship-related factors though. Talk to the concierge if you aren't offered one upon going to your room.
